Since the first episode is out, I thought I'd create a discussion thread for the new Negima OAD. It's rare for me to start these so lets see if I can set it up correctly.
Note
As usual, please try to follow these three easy forum courtesy habits when replying:
1) If you're the first person to post about an episode in any given week, please respond to the root post (this post) and indicate in the subject line which episode you're posting about.
2) If someone has already posted about an episode before you, please respond to that post (or a relevant reply to that post). Keep in the right subthread.
3) Don't use the blue "Post Reply" button because it causes your reply not to correctly inherit the subject line of the post you're replying to. Just click "Quote" to the post you want to reply to.

Finally. It only took 2 anime series, a live action drama, a couple OVAs and an previous OAD but we finally get a good adaptation of one of the key battles from the manga and its totally spectacular. I was grinning throughout from how awesome it was. Fate's ambush of the Ala Alba at the Magic World gateport is one of my favourite scenes from the Negima manga and its presentation here retains all of its intensity. They don't hold back on the blood and we even get a nice transformation scene with Asuna and Konoka. The only complaint I have is that the ED song is a bit too update and cheerful given how the episode ends.
I'm very much looking forward to seeing the next episode now though with the OAD format its going to be a long wait.

I just got it myself, will watch it tomorrow since its late. The previous OADs and OVAs were good, had the "Negima" feel to them compared to the 2 series.

I agree. Some of the other series tended to skip over the action adventure material (I'm assuming to save money).
This was incredibly well done. The fight and transformation sequences were awesome.
So now we know why half of Bakemono has looked like crap it seems.

Huh...I never watched the Ala Alba specials. Guess I'll do that.
ARGH THE AWESOME THAT HAS NOT YET BEEN ANIMATED. WHY DO YOU TEASE US SHAFT!?
All sorts of cool stuff gets skipped over, but there is some good character interaction. Once again, I must say that for all the faults of the original adaption, the casting was spot on, and holds up well here.
The Badge Battle in the festival had some good moments (where did you get those guns Yuuna?) and at the end, everyone's favorite tsundere osana najimi arrives...
Edit: Oh yeah, Happy Material still sucks

Incredibly pointless episode, but quite funny.
AND SERIOUSLY GUYS CAN YOU MAKE SOME NEW GOD DAMN SONGS!?

Oh thats nice, getting most of the character vignettes from before they went to England. Was not expecting that. Would have been nice to have gotten the Misora Confession Marathon event, but that would have taken up way too much time I guess.

SHAFT, you're forgiven for almost anything if you can keep this up and give us everything the OP promises.
That was hands down one of the best fights I've ever seen in ANYTHING, and totally beats the pants off of anything any of the adaptions thus far has done.

Quoted for truth. THIS is definitely what Negima should have been from the start. And like Fence says, the opening is a big teaser (Jack Rakan OH FUCK YES...) - and let us pray that somehow it can get up to present day with the manga, considering all the new pactios that are made (and not necessarily with Negi...I'll shut up now before I get slaughtered for massive spoilers...)
Oh, and Kotarou is awesome. Actually, with him, Jack and Negi himself, Negima has probably one of the best male cast in anime I've seen in a long time. Kinda ironic considering the amount of girls in the series (not that Negima doesn't have some of the best girls ever as well (Setsuna, Nodoka, Eva and Chisame being my pick of a very good bunch, which also includes Asuna, Konoka, Ku Fei and Yue...)

Not quite as action packed as last episode, but a lot of Chachamaru and Chisame character focus this time around and its still the best adaptation of Negima we've seen yet. The episode covers Chachamaru and Negi's travels to regroup with some of the nearby Ala Alba members after they were scattered across the world by Fate's spell and goes up to their reunion with Kotaro.
The Chachamaru scenes were cute, especially the winding scenes. There was also a lot of Chachamaru and Chisame fanservice. Chisame really looks like Naru with her hair down, doesn't she?
The couple fights in this episode continue to be well choreographed though they're only against generic fantasy monsters so they're not very exciting. That's more a complaint against the source than this adaptation though and its pretty hard to top any of the battles involving Fate.

There was also Kotaro vs. Negi for a bit, although it was just rival vs rival it was pretty intense as Kotaro was being fairly serious, like he usually is about fighting.

Seeing Chachamaru getting wound up was as delicious as in the manga. I was hoping we'd get to Setsuna's "wing maintainance" scene, to carry on the inadvertant molestation theme, but no such luck. Maybe next time. Actually this episode focused on a remarkably small cast (for Negima, anyway).

Well, Kotaro's face-off was probably the highlight, and he's no generic fantasy monster!
So, is this to be a 3 episode thing like Ala Alba, or does it carry on indefinitely? They're nowhere close to the end, and at least one character from the opening isn't likely to show up for a long time at this rate.

It should be four OADs total and then a movie to finish it out. The last OAD comes out in March, I believe.

We didn't get the explanation that Chisame's monster was mostly harmless, either! ^_^ Or am I remembering the manga incorrectly? ^_^;

Mmm...naked Chachamaru (integrated thighhighs and elbowgloves! Hakase, you are a true genius) and naked Chiu-chan to boot.
And of course the winding scene.
Not much else to say, since this was really just a 4 person episode.
...there is no way they are going to cover halfway to the stuff shown in the OP.

This is exactly why I'm skipping these OAV's. SHAFT made a very poor choice by starting this right from the beginning of the Magic World arc aka the "Let's Separate Everyone" section (which is the not only the worst part of the entire arc IMO, but a very poor choice of a starting point since there's not going to be that many girls in the episodes once episode 1 ends, and there's no way the film in 2011 is going to cover all the other events of the arc).
This is the way this OAV series should have been handled IMO:
1. Have the "Let's Separate Everyone" section be told in a flashback a la how the first Ala Alba OAV covered everything from the battle with Chao to Asuna's "major" training in a flashback before the OP.
2. Have OAV series start with Negi's confrontation with Fate at the first day of the Ostia festival.
3. Keep the idea of having the first "Nagi" flashback story be told as a Drama CD in order to focus more anime time on Negi and his crew.
4. Try to get the tournament storyline completed with the remaining OAV's.
5. If possible, keep the OAV explaining Yue's training as Valkyrie Knight after suffering amnesia.
6. Have the film try to cover most of the events of the arc that takes place after the tournament storyline.

This episode introduces Rakan and therefore is completely amazing. His transition into anime is excellent and they really capture all his personality quirks. The scene where he's trying to come up with attack names while blowing apart the landscape was great.
As with the other episodes in this OAD, the fight scenes are top notch. Negi's fight against Kagetarou is intense and fast-paced. It's just about as thrilling as you can ask for. It's also relatively gruesome by Negima standards as Negi gets his arm lopped off. Seeing Rakan use his artefact was also pretty awesome.
This episode also stands out for the Setsuna and Asuna waterfall and wing grooming scene. I'm sure a lot of people were looking forward to this scene. Setsuna gets a face full of Asuna's bust and it looks like they had Setsuna's grow a lot for the scene. in her tr

Just a quick heads up here. The spoilers for the next chapter of Negima have popped up online (not revealing anything related to story). Included with the spoilers is an ad for the OAD.
Included in the ad is some news involving Ku Fei having a seiyuu change (as her original voice is planning a short term study abroad and marriage). As for who's going to take over Ku Fei's voice, here's a one word clue to one of the roles her new seiyuu has voiced: STEW!!! ;)

While I'm not familiar with any of the other roles that Lynn's seiyuu has played, I do have a good clue when it comes to the seiyuu that will be playing Aisha (with me adding a bit of Nodoka to the mix when it comes to the clue).

Anyone have any idea how many episodes the "mou hitotsu no sekai" arc is supposed to be?
In any case, I just saw the 1st 4 episodes. I didn't like so much the focus on shounen jump style of training and fighting in eps 3 -4 but I must admit that the animation overall and presentation of these episodes were quite good. And the Chachamaru and Setsuna x Asuna fanservice scenes were amazing. I could however do without the freaky nippleless breasts as I thought this was supposed to have died with the old AIC shows like El Hazard and Battle Athletes.

Goddamn that was awesome. Absolutely perfect. Probably the best episode of Negima yet.

Time works differently in the magical world....
The Eva fight was sublime (and I ought to mention what a nice, eerie touch the dual vocals when she's incanting spells are). I was hoping for a bit more Konoka/Setsuna glomping, but then I'm always hoping for that, so what we got was still pretty good.

Well, Nodoka was pretty much awesome in a way before the events of the Magic World (of course, given the problems with the various animes, some of her coolness is sadly missing from the animated media).
However, as someone following the manga, it's so true that Nodoka does get at least a couple of awesome moments later on (you may want to check out Volume 25 for one example).

Yeah, this could end up being my favorite episode of Negima! animation ever.
Unfortunately, in the most recent installment of "Naze Nani Negima" on the cover under the dust jacket of vol. 32, when asked if next year's "long-form animation" (movie) is going to be the last animated version of Negima!, Akamatsu-sensei said "that's the plan".
Even though there's tons of the manga left to animate, at least they're hopefully going to go out with a bang.

I really hope there's an unstated "for now" in there, because there are some recent events that I really, really, really want to see animated, even if only in OAD form. Additionally, while there's just about zero chance of a TV series ever happening, I'll continue to dream that the main reason they haven't started a TV series is because Akamatsu is going to be writing this for another decade or two and they want to be more strategic with when they start it.
I'm guessing the movie will mainly cover volume 27 of the manga. It would make sense to cap off the animation with that, since the OADs have been covering bits and pieces of things leading up to it. Alternatively, since they are completely screwing chronology anyway and it will almost definitely be a For-Manga-Fans-Only movie (there's no point in making a movie of volumes 1-3 or making up something original), they could cover the Mahorafest tournament. As awesome as volume 27 was, I'd rather see those fights animated. Even better would it turned out to be the first of 2-3 movies covering the entire Mahorafest arc, but... yeah, I'm back in dreamworld again.
Also, I suppose now would be a good time to finally get around to watching the OADs. I haven't even watched the Ala Alba episodes yet.

I was kind of hoping this episode would heavily abbreviate the Magia Erebea training so it could cover Negi showing off the results of his training when he reunites with Nodoka. But the Magia Erebea training was pretty awesome too, so its not too huge a loss.
The first five minutes of the first Ala Alba episode was a clusterfuck, covering tiny snippets of at least 7 different chapters, some of them for less than 10 seconds. Even already knowing what was going on, it was pretty disorienting and I think they really could have found a better way to use those 5 minutes. The attempted badge stealing was amusing but not exactly high on my list of things I wanted to see animated if only allowed a few episodes to do it. On the other hand, Anya's introduction was an excellent choice of material to animate. The last episode covering snippets of pretty much all the students' activities was also a good choice.
Overall, the OADs have been excellent. Especially the gateport fight against Fate and his group. Holy crap that was awesome. And the last one should be the best. Yueeeeeeee~!

Yue dodging Emily's ice rain to stab the dragon and take it out was insanely awesome. Yue is one of my favorite characters, so this was already one of the highlights of the magical world arc (though this arc has a lot of those, its amazing how much awesomeness Akamatsu managed to stuff into this arc) and this episode made it even better. And that was a highly amusing transformation scene they added in.
Also, I don't remember the little flashback with Emily's mother in the manga (though I easily could have forgotten it). That was really cute.
