They have four of these things that go up to volume twelve. So is this a three-in-one VIZBIG style release or three volumes bundled together for the price of two?

I'm thinking a shrinkwrapped bundle. Mainly because of the lack of leadtime between being announced and it's December release, as well as lack of promotion. If they were going to do a VIZBIG release, they would have been a bit louder about it than this.

Yeah it doesn't look like an omnibus release.
I won't be buying One Piece manga from Viz until they change Zolo back to Zoro, though!

You do realise they're never going to do that, right? Plus both Zolo and Zoro are acceptable romanisations of his name ゾロ. I'd prefer Zoro too simply because it's what I'm used to, but I started getting the books anyway and was surprised to find it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I honestly don't care about Zoro being called Zolo, I have FUNimation's Dub on DVD for him being called Zoro :).

If they did an omnibus release with tweaked translations, then why not : p
They're not even on volume 20 at the moment anyway, it's not like they've done 50 volumes with an "L".

Actually, they're on 22 now and for previews of the upcoming speed-up they've kept Zolo.

The translations have already been done for their rush; if not, then they're probably close to finishing them. That's an insane amount of work (for the translators, editors, marketing) to do and do well. Unless Viz decided to arbitrarily change the name back -- which they evidently haven't -- there's fifty-some volumes of "Zolo" now.

I'm curious about what this release is as well, since I just saw it in Diamond's catalogue but don't wanna order without more info (and I haven't really found anything on their site). Anyone hear any updates? I'm hoping it's a VizBig edition...

As much as I would like it, I can't really imagine this is a VIZbig/omnibus listing. Not only has VIZ only been doing omnibus editions for already-completed series (which is what makes sense; why publish 2 version of the series at the same time?), there are "only" 22 volumes out (yes, I know, soon to be more). A regularly-scheduled omnibus release now wouldn't be long in catching up, making the singles obsolete. (Again, why publish 2 versions of the series at the same time?)
I also wonder if the format (VIZBig) has provided VIZ enough data yet to even tell if it's a profitable way of selling series. Unless they're selling like hotcakes (doesn't seem like it, if my local stores are any indication), I doubt VIZ will want to put out too many series this way at once. I'm sure there's a good bit of interest from some newer fans but there are still only a handful of series getting this sort of release and none complete yet.

Vagabond is ongoing in Japan. Inu Yasha hasn't been completely released here.

True. I actually missed the news that InuYasha getting a VizBIG (though I guess I can see why they might do this now), but I was "ignoring" Vagabond here because it's been in release for a really long time, new volumes are not exactly quick in coming out....and I was remembering that giving it the BIG treatment was their way of "re-launching" it (which makes sense; it would definitely garner more interest from new fans in that format than telling them it's great and have them try to dig up old issues while waiting ages for new singles to come out) and thus didn't count as publishing 2 versions at the same time. This is the only current release plan for Vagabond, isn't it? Or am I confused? It's been known to happen.

I talked to my rep at Simon and Schuster and she is pretty sure that the One Piece volumes will be pretty similar to the VizBig titles - a 600 page trade paperback for $14.99. That's the way her ad copy reads.
Regarding Vagabond, Viz has not been putting the title into their catalogs for a while now, so I missed the last couple of releases. I noticed them on the Simonsays website and am going to order them soon. Volume 28 came out a year ago in October. Volume 29 came out in May. Volume 30 is due out on November 17th. Volume 31 is listed on Simonsays as coming out in January, but has not been officially solicited yet so that date may change.

Hunh. Well, I guess we'll find out for sure eventually. It still seems weird to me, though...
It'd also be nice if they could be a little more consistent in pricing if they're trying to make a "line" out of the omnibuses. I guess they're still tweaking things though.

The standard seems to be $17.99 for most of the books with the Vagabond volumes being slightly more expensive at $19.99 due to the color pages, adult content and higher price of the original volumes.
The One Piece volumes are a bit cheaper, but maybe they're only doing that because of the One Piece event that starts in January.

...right. And those are three different prices. Which was my point. ;)

But the only exception for the VizBig line is Vagabond which has the color pages for $2.00 extra. Every other VizBig title that I've seen is $17.99, including InuYasha, Fushigi Yugi, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Rurouni Kenshin, and Hot Gimmick. I'd say that this is very consistent.
The One Piece books aren't being touted as VizBig, so the $14.99 price isn't really an inconsistency. :)

They're listed on Rightstuf now. Anyone know what East Blue means?

East Blue is where the story takes place before the crew gets to the Grand Line. Most likely, VIz is going to organize these omnibuses in terms of where each major arc takes place (East Blue, Barouqe Works, etc.). People can argue that all of the "East Blue" stuff is pretty major in and of itself, but if that's how Viz wants to organize them, then so be it.

That makes sense. Thanks. I decided to preorder these from the Viz Sale. I'm probably also going to have to buy a new bookshelf to go along with them and everything else I ordered. :depressed:
I'm wondering how the size of these sets will be since they aren't labeling them Big Editions.

Spotted the 1-3 set at Borders and it's a legit omnibus. But it's nothing like Viz Big. It's the same size as the regular graphic novels and the paper quality is horrible (think Tokyopop last summer).

Oh, wonderful. Nice to see Viz is still treating One Piece like a redheaded stepchild. I really would've loved a VizBig style release. Maybe someday...

Huh, so it is an omnibus then.
Too bad about the quality though, I would've double-dipped just to have Oda's awesome color artwork.

That makes me believe that this is just like Tokyopops Kare Kano and Chronicles of the Cursed Sword omnibuses, to give people a kick start at a longer series more than a regular type of release format.

I was saying I would've bought if it had Oda's color artwork.

Saw the omnibus release at Borders yesterday as well and the paper they use is kin to what's used in the English Shounen Jump releases. The paper is super-thin so the omnibus (with 3 volumes-in-one) has the thickness of about two volumes of Viz's One Piece.
Well, at least they numbered the pages correctly. :B

Sad thing is they are doing that paper quality with volume 23 of OP also.

...?
The paper quality is the same between 23 and the previous volumes I've bought over the years.

Yeah, I didn't notice much of a difference either. And if the paper was thinner, the book itself would also be thinner than the previous 11-chapter volumes, which it isn't. So even if they have changed the paper-quality, it's hardly even noticable, and certainly far better than what you get in SJ.

Off the central topic, but still on the topic of omnibus releases - I received Inu Yasha the first omnibus and there is only a colour art gallery at the back and no colour throughout the chapters. Still, nice to have some colour at least.
