Although recently released, are there any Japanese site reviews of ZZ Gundam set 1's quality so far?

Not that I've seen, but the impression I got from 2ch was that it's about right for a 16mm show, so it's never going to look great and not worth buying if you already own the DVDs.

Are the OP/EDs on 35mm? I saw the BD openings for Zeta Gundam and they looked unbelievably better than the actual BD episodes.

The creditless ones should be, yeah.

It looks very similar to Z Gundam, perhaps slightly better (more solid lines, less colour fringing). But it clearly went through same transfer and mastering process.

how come the openings to zeta and double zeta on bluray look so good its like watching an ova? i know it was usual to make the openings look better than the acutal show back in the days.

Because they were filmed on 35mm, while the rest of the show was 16mm. Pretty standard for TV shows since the OPs/EDs get continually re-used each episode.
In contrast, in the late 90's you often had OPs/EDs which were animated digitally while the rest of the show was done with cels. This happened a lot with AIC shows like DUAL!, Bubblegum Crisis 2040, etc.

Got both of the sets this past week.
Quick spot check of the video reveals no problems other than the ones inherent with a 16mm source (other than the creditless OPs/EDs which were from 35mm film and episode 1 which was from a video-edited source).
Can't say I'm too big of a fan of the mecha illustrations on the covers, though (the character images look a bit better, although the coloring looks like something out of a 80's US comic book). They're by Keiichi Sato, who as far as I can tell, never worked on Gundam ZZ at all. The illustrations are okay, but they look rather primitive compared to the stunning LD and DVD covers. Which of course, aren't included in the booklet or anywhere in these sets, just like how they weren't included with the Z Gundam Blu-ray sets.
I can see how they were maybe trying for a retro look with these, but it just comes off as corner cutting IMO.

I don't like the pulp image either. And it seems almost like turning a quality content packaging eyecatch on its head.
I feel like ZZ needs friends despite Judeau's stupid institutionalised (copied by Planetes) decision at the story's end.
