Not long until this comes out in cinemas now, new information has me looking forward to this a lot more now since it seems to be a lot more than just a recap movie.

The part that got me interested again
- The first half of the movie, which is the first hour, has 30-40% new footage. The latter half, which the latter hour, has about 80%.
- The movie sequel (released after next year) has no traces of the TV series to be seen.
I looking foward to this movie being a Macross junkie. Am starting to save some money for all the merchinize that the movie will bring in.

I'm encouraged by the news that its more Sheryl focused.
On the other hand, it terrifies me.

How's more Sheryl terrifying: :\
And yeah this really is a lot more Sheryl focused.. seems like they're really reacting to Sheryl's dominance in popularity on 2ch, polls, mags. You would've thought they would try to improve Ranka's character (like with Minmay in DYRL.. Ranka/Megumi is really hated on 2ch...) more so than make Sheryl dominate.
In regards to songs I just saw the tracklist for an upcoming Sheryl/May'n mini album..
http://gabrielarobin.com/2911/macross-f-movie-mini-album-universal-bunny
1. Universal Bunny
2. pink monsoon
3. Gira Gira Samaー(^ω^)ノ[Mr./Ms. Gira Gira1]
4. Izorado2
5. Aenai Toki [When we can not meet]
6. Eien [Eternity]
7. Obelisk
8. Tenshi ni Narichatta [I have become an angel] (universal version)
That's 8 new Sheryl/May'n songs compared to one we know about Ranka so far in Sou Da Yo which played in the first trailer.
Pink Monsoon/Tenshi ni Narichatta cd single comes out on the 21st btw... that could backfire releasing without the movie...

I hope Kawamori isn't that much of a dickhead.

Believe me I don't like Ranka and think they totally dropped the ball with her character but I thought they would've made an effort to improve her. If she's still the same it's a waste of screentime, reduced but still a waste.

I just saw it this morning at an 8:00am showing, and I thought it was great. I'm surprised at those percentages though, after seeing it I would have thought that there was even less re-used footage from the TV series than that - although I did watch the series a couple of months ago. However, on several occasions when they did reuse TV series footage, they modified both the dialog and context of those scenes.
It is definitely an alternate retelling, not a recap movie. However, it isn't a radical alternate universe type retelling: most of the characters and their relationships to each other are the same. Obviously though, the secondary characters get very little screen time compared to Sheryl, Ranka and Alto. The plot is very similar (albeit simplified) but is not identical to that of the TV series.
One plot shortcut they took was that at the beginning Alto and Ranka already know each other, but otherwise the movie never seemed rushed - they used all of the full two hours to tell a complete story, and the pacing worked very well.
There was a little more fan service than in the TV series: one of Sheryl's concert costumes (with the little pom-pom) was really hot, and the first time her phone rang was both funny and hot.

I was lucky to manage to extend my stay in Japan and got to watch the movie on Nov 23rd morning (same day i was leaving). The movie exceeded my expectations, as that i was expecting a typical compilation movie.
Without giving out much of the details, while the movie compromises the characters depth and development a bit (and deletes some supporting characters); it has a far better plot, direction and ending than the TV series IMO. Of course, the new May'n songs are very nice too. It is worth mentioning that she singed them in the Macross Cross Live Concerts (Oct 17 &18) before the release of the album.

I'm very happy to have seen this in the theatre the other day. It's an amazing film, and easily the best mecha theatrical motion picture since DYRL.
By the way, kinda curious that English sites are calling it "The False Diva" when the official filmbook calls it "The False Songstress." Also funny there's an ad for the Professor Layton movie using the word 'utahime' ("eien no utahime"), but it's called "The Eternal Diva."

Oh yeah, and "songstress" is a kinda cumbersome word, I think Diva probably works better in this context.

...did you just say Professor Layton movie?
Yeah. I was wondering when it would come out because the first teaser trailers came out a long time ago (1-2 years.)
Ironically, Layton and Macross F have their "utahime" reversed. Sheryl is the "diva" whereas Layton's character is a "songstress." :D But although songstress is now a somewhat old-fashioned word, the selfish modern nuance attached to "diva" has sullied that word's meaning.

The proliferation of fanart that focuses on Sheryl being molested by...Sheryl has me fascinated and eager to see this.
I don't think you could come up with a sexier pairing than SherylXSheryl.

It also totally fits her personality. After all, autoeroticism is the realm of rock stars and divas, though she does not asphyxiate herself unlike some. It's a shame you'll have to watch it on the small screen because her concert footage is manificent in the theatres. It's breathtaking.

Well. That was fucking awesome.
Everyone was a lot less stupid this time around, not having the plot by Galaxy be a total secret to everyone helped, and Sheryl actually knowing about it made a lot more sense as well.
I get all the SherylXSheryl stuff now, and that opening performance was pretty amazing.
Loved the continuity nods, and Ranka's CM montage was hilarious.
And then the final battle was just epic. They used a lot of the tricks from the final battle of Frontier TV, so they'll need to come up with some new stuff for the next movie.
Grace looked a bit younger this time around, and we also got her tits, which is odd considering they went out of their way to avoid showing Sheryl's.
And they did a good job faking us out with Michel, I really did think they killed him, of course they still might do it later...
Anyway, fantastic all around.

Universal Bunny is now my favorite Sheryl song. Though all her songs for the movie are fantastic, the only one I don't really like is Tenshi ni Nacchatta, which is just to slow for me to want to listen to regularly, but its not bad by any stretch.
On the other hand, Ranka got shafted, getting exactly one new song, (Sou Dayo) and a bunch of (admittedly amusing) commercial jingles. I actually like Ranka a lot more now after rewatching the TV series and this movie, so I hope she gets treated a bit better next time.
Has there been any word on how this movie connects to the greater Macross universe? Are they treating it like DYRL, a movie within the fiction (which is certainly plays like...) or does this invalidate the TV series?

No idea but remember that DYRL being a movie within the fiction was something that happened years after its release. It went from alternate retake to being a movie version of the Space War events that wasn't canon at all apart from the mecha designs.
On a side note I find it funny that Alto's VA is the main character of VC3, Sheryl's VA is the lead Valkyrie and May'n is doing the OP theme. is Ms 17 forever going to voice a villain as well?

Even if it hasn't officially been classified as such, I think they've clearly approached the movie as if it was an in-universe dramatisation. There's a lot about the movie which starts to make a lot more sense when you treat it that way.
Like the product placement - I don't mean the blatant things like the Ranka commercials, more the way that the camera has a habit of lingering on certain Macross-universe products or the way they are used throughout the movie in the same fashion product placement is used in real movies. The framing and sustained shots on the Nyan-Nyan restaurant during the opening sequences is the most egregious example, though not the only.
Aside from that, though, both the character and plot writing kind of smacks of being written by someone who has caught the gist or elements of what the events actually were without having actually been party to them (or with the all the knowledge we were party to from the TV show). As such, the characterisation isn't so much simplified as it is 50% where the characters ended in the TV show, and 50% what the public perception of the characters would have been based on media coverage and the like. Not so much idealised, but certainly romanticised. The most blatant signal is the way that Sheryl behaves during the first Vajra attack, though things like the relative lack of drama about Alto joining SMS is a similar kind of thing.
As far as the plot goes, well, that's a touch more ambiguous, particularly since it's been a while since I've seen the TV show. All the talk about Sheyl being a spy and the increase in discussion surrounding Aimo strike me as the kind of thing that someone from the outside might include to either make the story more interesting or make more sense were they trying to make the plot up from a skeleton summary.
It also probably explains the absence of some of the more inconsequential (in purpose, if not bust-size) minor characters :sd:

Also the rundown of previous Macross singers before Sheryl's concert only makes sense if you know what happens later (and who would compare themselves to Sharon Apple?) Not to mention that Michel later namedropped her again, along with Ri Kohran, which...I find hard to imagine Michel just pulling out of nowhere.

For me, the TV series was something that started out promisingly and ended up being the biggest disappointment of the year. Hence, I was a little hesitant initially when watching this as I thought it was merely going to be a compilation. It's actually a better retelling of the TV series. Sheryl comes across as more likable and the plot flows better. I still dislike Alto - always acting angsty and angry and generally being a sourpuss so I don't see the deal with the triangle. I liked the increased fanservice though.;) Since they seem to have used most of the plot devices from the TV series, I suppose the 2nd movie will mostly be going in a new direction.

-Only 2059? That seems like insanely rapid progress. And shows that I have totally forgotten my Macross timeline.
-Wait... this a reboot of the series? God damn it Japan.
-Neo Lombard Street has bush dragons.
-Klein Klan!
-Good old nipple buns.
-Fuck you Lynn Minmei!
-FAIYAA BOMBAA!!! *echoing applause*
-Helloooooooooooooooooo black bunny.
-Stop arguing above the stage Sheryl. Just get changed out of that horrid looking cowgirl outfit.
-Ozma! NOOOO! He never got to have his pineapple salad. :(
-Heh Sheryl escapes via the sewers.
-Grace is touching herself. This bodes ill.
-Yay Ozma got better. Time for pineapple salad. :)
-Yay Ranka's song. Now give me "Gorgeous, delicious, deculture."
-Suddenly a Bobomb!
-Sheryl seems like more of a ditz than ever before.
-Silly Ozma. Ranka was made to sing. I spy with my little eye, a Minmei doll.
-Alto and Sheryl fall down a hill. My such large and full... hippo cows.
-So Sheryl's grandma heard this song on "some planet." Meaning it's a 50+ year old song. From earth? Or is Sheryl part Zentradi. I forget.
-Natto... ew.
-Rank is still under development. :\
-Mecha-musume Ranka! <3
-We have achieved "Gorgeous, delicious, deculture."
-GOD DAMN IT!
-Now the adorable lifeform shows up? A bit late little dude. I figured you got cut.
-Poor Alto. Always the bridesmaid never the bride.
-Grace has self styling hair? And no shame.
-HAH! Sheryl renting the SMS. Nice.
-Love Love Tenkyoken! Err Totsugeki Love something...
-Hey Klein Klan! Where have you been you adorable little elf?
-Aww cute little Ranka. Run Ranka run!
-Ranka's inexplicable hair ears are weirder than ever.
-Sheryl Henshin! Oil derrick turned pirate ship?
-Oh no. You guys aren't killing Michael again. Klein Klan to the rescue damn it!
-DAEDELUS MONSTER PUUUUUUUUUANCH!!!!!! Afro power indeed.
-Hurray ejection seat! Klan's getting laid tonight! I feel sorry for Michael's pelvis yet so happy for Klan.
-PREVIEW!? There's a sequel?
Well that was fun. A bit too much Sheryl. Not enough Ranka cuteness and singing, but the montage of jobs was silly fun. Way way WAAAAAy to little Klan Klein. The sequel better fix that.

Hey if the movies keep Michael alive and get him hitched to Klan Klein, this is the one true timeline as far as I'm concerned.

Oh. I just realised that Matsuura Nanase was completely cut out. I'd forgotten about the megamune meganeko. Not that she adds anything to the story at all. But they put the little green glowing squirrel 90 minutes into the movie after I figured they'd excised him from the story. *shrug*

Finally got around to watching this. It's been a while since I watched the TV series, but it seemed to me that most of the shortcuts they took (Alto & Ranka already friends, he already knows Klan, etc.) worked fairly well. Sheryl comes off better from the start instead of starting off a real bitch and getting a lot more likable. Rather epic battles- it will definitely be interesting to see the final battle in the 2nd movie given as it was pointed out they already used at least one of their tricks here.
Nakajima Megumi's singing improved in the span of time between the TV series and the movie- but May'n still blows her away (both in skill and the fact she just got to sing a LOT more...). If the second movie follows the TV series at all though, Ranka will get a good bit more exposure in it. Glad to see Michael make it through, at least for now... hopefully he and Klan will get a happy ending in this telling of the story, that was my one big gripe with the TV series.
