Hmm. I might be interested in picking this up, off the top of my head I think I should have enough room in March. Either way, definitely keeping an eye on it, cheers for the info.

I'm definitely picking this up as I absolutely loved this series. It was on par if not better than Fumoffu for me.

No non-credit OPs listed for some reason. This arrived for me today, and incidentally the reason for this is because the OP doesn't use any overlays for credits. All of the credits are integrated right into the animation (well, so to speak -- they were composed in After Effects or whatever they used to composite it), so they probably never actually produced a "non-credit" version. (That being said, because of the way it was done, it wouldn't be that hard to make a non-credit version -- all the credits are white on black anyway.)
And, in other news, it is indeed an SD upscale. This doesn't bother me as much as it might otherwise because I deliberately waiting on collecting the JP DVDs back in the day to wait for the Blu-Rays anyway (so it's not like I double-dipped). But in case anyone was wondering if there's an HD master... I take it there is not.

Sigh I just got it as well and the ridiculous price we're paying for these upscales is insane.

Sigh I just got it as well and the ridiculous price we're paying for these upscales is insane.Well, it's either that or paying an even higher price for the DVDs that have to cram it all into less bandwidth. Plus the release comes with two CDs full of music from a number of different albums that would have been rather expensive to collect individually. So it is expensive, but I still think it's the best value in the Japanese market for this franchise. And in terms of "the Japanese anime home media market is expensive!", well, what else is new.
As I said before, if I had purchased the DVDs already and were double-dipping for this, I'd be annoyed. As it stands, I still think I was right to wait on this one. Of course, that's just my own opinion.

Yes it's a better deal than the DVDs but it's still insane what they're charging.
I mean in relative terms a PS3 would have been cheaper. I wouldn't mind so much if they put some work in to make it look better like redraw some stuff or add some animation in, in order to make it a HD source but geez. This is the main reason I haven't gotten the FMP set. I mean it's over half 1k for something it probably took a week for them to do.

That doesn't make much sense. There's no way to make it sort of HD. The only way something digitally animated in SD is going to become HD is to completely reanimate it from scratch. I don't see that ever happening for any show.

Ugh. You're missing the point. It's that whoever is working on these should put some work and time into making these the best possible releases they can.

So there is no way to add animation to something done in SD or partially redraw it? It HAS to be redrawn completely from scratch?

It's still going to sell 300 copies [insert number if higher or lower].

I suppose I can't argue with that logic as it is a business.
I take back some of my early argument. I just saw the DVD prices. God what the hell. I pray to god that the 8190 is for the limited edition of that DVD single.

I pray to god that the 8190 is for the limited edition of that DVD single.Where have you been? The LE DVD pricing here (7140 for 2 episodes, 8190 for 3 episodes in a 8x3 + 2 pattern) was pretty standard R2 DVD pricing at the time when this was released. DVD prices have gone down a bit in recent years with Blu-Ray prices taking their place (for example, Bakemonogatari Blu-Ray is released at the same basic price point, with DVDs being 1000 yen cheaper).
As I said before, you make it sound like standard R2 pricing is some sort of great shock to you. How much research did you do before jumping in and making purchases? The cheapest one-cour late-night anime series you'll see on DVD or Blu-Ray will still be around 30,000 Yen MSRP, and most two-cour shows are double that. And yes, you could buy a PS3 for that kind of money. It's pretty much like "welcome to the R2 anime home media market". It's freakin' expensive.

Depends on if you buy it in singles or boxsets. Even blu-ray prices are nowhere near as bad as these DVD singles. Most of the time discounts are offered on the shows so the MSRP doesn't really matter. The only other show I've seen which had the singles anywhere near the MSRP was Macross Frontier and even most of those were cheaper than the MSRP and were nowhere near 8000.
I've bought more than my fair share of R2 DVDs and blu-rays but I've never seen them stick to the MSRP for the most part. The LE does make easier to swallow but jesus I would love to see what otaku do for a living. Look at the Darker than Black DVDs, Toradora, Eureka Seven, etc. The most expensive of the shows I listed was Toradora and those were $10 each off every single. So yea Seto is on the more expensive side. Is that price unheard of, no. However it definitely is one of the more expensive volumes and unlike many shows has no discount on the singles, atleast on Amazon JP.

However it definitely is one of the more expensive volumes and unlike many shows has no discount on the singles, atleast on Amazon JP.Well, it did have the usual ~26% discounts on Amazon back when it was originally released. The issue is simply that it's low stock now since these are the Limited Editions. The less stock that Amazon has, the less discounts are available.

Kinda interesting logic as it seems it would be reverse. Anyway yea they're not offering discounts on the standard releases as well. So yea the DVDs are pretty expensive in comparison atleast for the time being anyway. Turns out that 30,000 yen for the blu-ray set is a bargain after all.

I'm employed as a clerk for the US Postal Service ... :)
Been getting oodles of overtime lately, so I can splurge on some BD sets - Nadesico last month, maybe Angelic Layer this month, and probably ROD the next one.

Kinda interesting logic as it seems it would be reverse. Why? The less stock you have, the more valuable the product because it's more rare. Especially with Limited Edition products where they're never going to have a re-printing. Amazon's typical policy is to heavily discount in the pre-order phase, and to use the discount after release to manage inventory so they don't have too many or too few of a product. By the time they're down to only a few copies left, they might as well sell it for as much as they can get before it's gone.
...and some of the Seto No Hanayome discs are still discounted on Amazon, by the way. It depends on the volume.

Not really. Demand will be highest(normally anyway) at the release date then as sales dwindle down you offer discounts to attract people on the fence. There is little incentive to offer discounts to the early buyers as they're going to buy the product anyway. I see how they're doing it and it's an interesting spin. The OVAs are discounted and a few(and by a few I mean a couple) from the regular series are but that's it.

And I'm employed as a technical manager for a renewable energy firm. It's more an issue of "do I want this" rather than "can I afford it."
Generally speaking, this forum has always been inhabited by a crowd of regulars that are, on average, slightly older than many fans, and are professionals or semi-professionals with a mindset of buying rather than...other things, and the disposable income to sustain it. I'd like to think that that's why certain types of individuals don't tend to last very long around here, why we're able to maintain a higher-than-Internet-average level of maturity and comprehension, and why we tend to, as a rule, be somewhat non-representative of fandom at large in our opinions, areas of concern, and knowledge base. Maybe it's a bit insular, but, if nothing else, I appreciate finding complete sentences to read.

I just find it interesting that they sell the DVDs and stuff at these prices when from what I'm finding the average salary for Japanese is around 30k. One show could very easily be 1/30th of a person's salary for the entire year!
Trust me you guys are nowhere near as bad as the Head-fi forum where people casually blow 1k on headphones or god knows how much on a DAC.

In that sense, I guess it's just that we're limited here by prices not being all that high. I mean, spending $50 on a CD set or $100 on a pillowcase or $500 on a Blu-ray box set probably seems like a lot, either on its own or in relation to perceived value of the item, for some folks. But you're not going to get much higher than those sorts of ranges on a per-item basis (then the ridiculousness comes from buying multiple items).
And that's just in terms of limited interests and/or open discussion. This is predominantly an anime forum, after all. I know we have audiophiles here who regularly drop large chunks of change on new speakers, or gearheads who've spent tons of money to eke the tiniest extra bit of performance out of their chosen gas-powered mode of transportation, etc., etc. It just doesn't come up as often.

If you don't mind me asking, how much would you say you spend on anime per month?
I don't mind you asking, but if you want to get into an extended discussion of buying/spending habits, I would recommend starting a thread in Retail.
!warning - my lifestyle is more of a cautionary tale than an example to be emulated - warning!
I can't break my spending down specifically to anime, i.e. DVDs/BDs, but for all anime, manga and related material (soundtracks, art books, figures, and miscellaneous character goods) purchases over the past 12 months (03/09 thru 02/10) I averaged just over $930/month ($160 for US domestic releases, $775 for imports). Those numbers include shipping and other fees since they are costs incurred in acquiring the stuff.
The import number is probably a bit skewed with respect to what I normally spend as I went on a figure buying spree from late '08 to mid '09 - hadn't bought any before then, and haven't bought any since. I've also been on something of an art book buying binge the last few months, but it's tapering off.
