Why is it I have the urge to put my HD remaster box on eBay now?
Buster Darkwings

I already sold mine ages ago, but it was before I had a Yahoo Japan seller account so I only got 10,000 yen for it at Liberty in Akihabara. Should have just kept it for the huge booklet, ah well.
edit: Hmm, looking over the product description, this release might not be so perfect either. The original stereo audio doesn't appear to be included, and the Gekiganger III OVA is listed as an extra, so it might be in SD or upscaled (it wasn't remastered along with the rest of the content in the Premier Complete DVD BOX).

I'd be thrilled if I got that much. Aside from a few rare titles, R2s do not fare well on US eBay auctions. I believe I'd get exactly... peanuts.

Yeah, some extras from DVD set that they are releasing at the same time are missing. ~_~

Hmm, perhaps they're only including the extras that are in HD since the unincluded ones are stuff like the music video from Prince of Darkness which are likely to be SD. If so then that's a good sign that Gekiganger III will be in HD after all.
I guess it's not really likely that they'd release Gekiganger III upscaled anyways, considering the only upscaled cel-animated anime so far is the Galactic Heroes OVAs which is likely a master issue (either a lack of film elements or the digitally re-animated segments only being available in SD).

I recently bought the ADV DVDs for this series, but I haven't watched them. Is it a good show? How does the HD remaster look (for those of you who've seen the R2 DVDs)?

ive always wanted to see the home video version of nadesico (the adv dvds are the tv version) and the version of prince of darknesss that was released here wasnt animorphic widescreen. all just a sad reminder that the series isnt finished. now i am sad

I wonder if it will have the aliasing or if that was an artifact of the SD downconversion.
Buster Darkwings
11-19-2009, 05:45 AM
I'd be pretty surprised if it did, they'd have to be pretty incompetent to allow that on the masters, not to mention be willing to incur a massive drop in reputation for their Blu-rays. But Star Child is so far unproven (and King Records Blu-rays have a pretty bad reputation from White Album) so I guess I'll be waiting for reviews before buying just to be on the safe side.

Hard to say - CCS had the same problem, and they made new masters for that.

I thought they just used the old 1080i Hi-Vision analog masters.

今回のブルーレイ化にあたって、35mmフィルムをハイビジョンネガテレシネした上に、更に細かくフィルム 修正を加えたニューマスター! (本編は以前ジェネオンよりリリースしたDVD-BOXのマスター流用ではございません)
My kanji may suck and all, but let me try all the same:
"This Blu-ray has been given a 35mm High Vision (HD) Telecine from a newly corrected 35mm master. (This is NOT the master used on the Geneon DVD-BOX.)"

Yeah, but there was still color fringing and stuff, IIRC.
Skywise
11-19-2009, 09:17 PM
Right, but we never did find out what caused that. Aside from the colored EE, I have no issues with the CCS master they used. If it had been analog 1080i, I think there would have been a lot more problems, at least some progressive/interlaced issues.

I haven't bought or watched the HD R2 remasters, but just the fact that they (and most likely this set too) includes the home release version of the series unlike ADV's TV version is already a plus for sure.
For me i like the show but not to the point of actually spending that much for it. I'll wait for a sale or a cheaper US release.
Humm, i wonder if it has the seiyuu interview that were featured on the LDs before ?

The seiyuu interviews were included as a bonus on the remastered DVD set, not sure if they'll be included here. For some reason the remastered DVD set also used the TV length cut of episode 1 and not the extended version from the LDs (the original R2 DVD set used the LD cut, as did the R3s).

That's assuming ADV/Section 23/whatever-they're-calling themselves-now no longer has the license. But yeah, I'd love to see the show get the same treatment as Lost Universe or Tylor.
As it is, I'll be picking up the re-released dvd set when it appears. It's less expensive than the previous set, and thankfully within my price range now. :) (I'll only go as far as 250 euros when it comes to R2Js)
Didn't know it got an R3 release, though. I've seen plenty of vcds when I was looking through YesAsia ages back, but no dvd sets...

No, that was just a cover by Angela (they also did Dearest). The CD was released around the same time as the remastered DVDs, so a lot of people thought this meant it would be on the DVDs as well.

Looks pretty good, except that it has the same jagged artifacts as the previous DVD set, from a poorly de-interlaced 1080i transfer (or whatever).
Doesn't bode well for other stuff that suffered from the same on DVD, like Evangelion, Utena or Patlabor as I recall. On the other hand I think Gunbuster had it on DVD but was clean on Blu-ray, though maybe they did a new transfer for the movie version.

Hmm. I'll have to see if my video processor's PReP (http://www.anchorbaytech.com/vrs_technology/prep.php) can do anything about that.
Probably won't be able to get the package until next week, though. The end of the fiscal year is always the busiest time for me.

I don't think you can fault it for being grainy, it's 16mm film. It's just going to be quite grainy, unless if you start messing around with dnr, which I would rather they not. I imagine the OP was done in 35mm film, which would account for less grain being visible there. I believe that wasn't a very uncommon practice.

I don't know what StarChild did this time, but the same ed and tv shots from the previous remastered dvd-set wasn't quite as grainy, in contrast.
The copy ed-shot (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/HXSSL9bnowT1twt__GEK9A) was a bit softer and cleaner, while the BD ed-shot here is more vibrant. I used the ed from ep22, which I think is the same one as the BD-shot here. Same with the ep-23 copy-shot (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/htO8gS9nId4s5A9jmZNVbg) of neko-Ruri.
It could simply be somebody already cleaned up the remastered-copy I saw, however. :sd:
It could also be that the capture-software used in the BD-shots have some either aggressive or passive settings.
We'll prolly need somebody who's got the actual discs of the previous remastered-version to do some comparisons.

Thanks for the DVD remaster screenshots. They definitely used some DNR on the DVD version. It's absolutely devoid of grain; DVD's lack of resolution hides the extent of grain, but doesn't absolutely get rid of it. I cropped the BD screenshots to 1440x1080 (4:3) then did a bicubic resize to the 640x480. Compare to the DVD and all the grain is gone, and some of the detail.

The OP's and the next-ep previews (especially the texts) were definitely cleaned up really well. The ED's not so much with all those grain, but it's all good and the coloring's quite vibrant.
The grain on the episodes themselves are fine enough and not as much. The colors are solid and vibrant, too. Especially the Aestivalis colors of the three stooges.
Frickin' nice!

Finally got my Nadesico box today. I should have had it on Tuesday, but apparently there's someone new on my Fedex route, and he managed to "attempt" delivery 3 days in a row without ever leaving a note on the door. After a dozen phone calls or so, directions, requests that they call if they can't find me, I sort of lost faith. So for the fourth day I told them to hold it at the station. With over a foot of snow, it seemed like a great time for a 4 mile round trip walk. ;)
Anyway, I watched a bit. Very nice. I can see the aliasing if I look for it, but it's a big improvement. For fun I compared to the ADV release I had on hand. Ewwwww. Compare to the first OP screenshot from earlier in the thread.

The movie's really nice, too. Especially the obviously superior DTS-MA mix.
They left some of the film-print blemishes as noticeable but not distracting, like in the tv-eps. A really nice touch, imho.

-Nadesico BD/MKV-shots vs R1-dvd snaps (http://picasaweb.google.com/uhhni.treat/NadesicoBdVsR1Dvd)-
note: just be aware that the BD-snaps were at 6mb each if you view them in fullscreen/zoom modes.
fwiw, i actually had to use some beta-software to convert the bd to mkv just for the snaps. not sure how much quality was lost during the conversion.
