Just watched the following trailer for the Lufia 2 remake:
http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/11/25/lufia-ii-remake-is-more-action-less-rpg/
While the 3D doesn't look that bad for the Nintendo DS, I still have to wonder how this game will fair with the fans of the original. I really enjoyed the original, but to me this game looks a little too much like Y's.
If they were going to remake a game in this style, I much would have rather seen Soul Blazer remade. (then again it really doesn't need to be remade. :P)

That's really weird. It seems more like Zelda than a RPG (and no Dragon Warrior-style combat!). I also don't like the new character designs. On a side note, I never liked Lufia II as much as Lufia I. I don't think knowing the (depressing) ending to it beforehand helped.

Y's was the first thing I thought of when I saw the trailer as well. I'm somewhat torn on this game. It looks like it might be an at least decent game in its own right, but I'm also rather bitter that they revived the Lufia franchise only to turn it into an almost completely different kind of game, to the point its almost inaccurate to call it a remake. About the only thing it has in common with Lufia II is that some of the characters have the same names.

Anyone know if the story will be the same as the original?

Given that it's on the DS and the drastic character redesigns, I'm going to say SE probably doesn't care too much how the game plays with the older fans. That's not meant to be a shot at SE, either. I just think they're conveniently tapping the remaining resources of a dead series in an attempt at creating a (somewhat) new brand.
Graphically, the game looks OK, and if it manages to be fun/good, it won't much matter if some old sods get all pouty (I'm an old sod, and I liked the first two Lufia games, by the way).
A little part of me wants to be upset, since it's Lufia...but not. Still, it's almost a completely new game, so I'm pretty lukewarm over the whole thing.

Answer to that is yes and no. Check out this link (http://zepy.momotato.com/2009/11/18/new-lufia-game-details/).

What I got from that link is that the original team that developed Lufia II came back to develop this remake.
Which means we could have had a real sequel, which would have ideally been in the same 2D style as the first two.

Well, I doubt SE (or he who holds the purse strings) said they could do WHATEVER they wanted. SE doesn't seem much like a hands-off company, so I'm sure certain stipulations were attached.
I guess we could have gotten a real sequel, but I mean, the guys at Neverland have mostly been developing games for other publishers. For all we know, SE just threw some money at them to revive the name, so they took the easy road by re-imagining the more prominent of the two SNES games (also helps that it's a prequel).

As a Lufia II fan (it's one of my favorite RPGs on the SNES), this is literally the first thing that came to mind watching the trailer:
"What the @%)* is ****ing materia doing in my Lufia game?!"
That said, this game looks great, graphically. However, aside from the familar world map and characters sporting familiar names, this game bears absolutely no resemblance to Lufia II so I can't fathom why Square-Enix is remaking that game. Why not just use new characters and a new story and just call it a Lufia game? It's no more or less stupid than what they already do with Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, so why remake Lufia II?
An RPG with Mario-esque platforming elements? I can't say I'm interested, but I applaud them for trying to be original.

I wouldn't applaud them too much. Most of those elements were in the original Lufia 2 as well, just in a more Zelda-like presentation.

Wow, I'll have to get that game when it eventually comes over here and have it join my increasingly larger DS RPG backlog. It certainly looks like they have used one of their good programming and animator teams for this. It's actually quite amazing what they are able to do with DS graphics these days, I remember when FF7 was considered top of the line for the Playstation. Right now I'd say it's fair to say that the DS is on a par with the original Playstation for graphics given the smaller screen and a good programming team.
This game has me wondering if that shadow of the colossus like game (Blood of Bahamut) will come over here first as I was really impressed with the example videos of that.

Shining Force fans welcome you to their club.
Seriously though, I'll give this a chance. I did like the first game more then the second story-wise. The platforming/puzzles in the video felt more like an Alundra type of game, more then a Zelda or Ys.

Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals to be released in U.S. later in 2010. (http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q2-2010/052610b.html)
While I really would have preferred a more typical RPG remake of Lufia II, there's still a decent chance I'll pick this up, though I'll need to see and hear more about it first before I can decide.
