View Full Version : Atlus hates gamers: More Etrian Odyssey on the way!
Writing as one who sank over 100 hours into the first game, I have mixed feelings about Etrian Odyssey 3 (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/09/back-into-the-labyrinth-atlus-announces-etrian-odyssey-3/) being on the way. On the one hand, these games are actually a lot of fun. On the other, they're also the kind of games that make people want to chuck their DSs through the nearest window.
I bet Nintendo's getting ready to ramp up DSi production.

I'm going to play this one 'til it begs for mercy - and probably import another round of OSTs on top of that. Can't wait.

I've barely scratched the surface of EO, and who knows if I'll ever get around to starting EO2, as it sits in my backlog. And now EO3?
Our Atlus overlords have no mercy! :sd:
I had no idea there was an EO3. I figured Atlus would announce 7th Dragon by now though, a game that was created by the same person as but is said to be better and more accessible.

The problem is that 7th Dragon is a Sega title. So if they're not going to bring it over themselves or license it to Atlus, there's not much that can be done about it.

I never did get the 2nd game. How was it compared to the first game? I got pretty far in the first game but haven't completed it due to playing other games at the same time. It wasn't all that hard due to the ease of mapping and return to town for healing.

The 2nd game offers a couple of new classes, adjusts the skills of all the old classes, adds more frequent continue points, turns the "force" gauge into class-specific super attacks when filled, adds an "auto-attack" button for clearing out weaklings and features updates to all the music and art. Its only major flaw is that it's not quite as balanced as its predecessor. For example, the gunner and hexer are wildly powerful while the beast and survivalist are mostly useless.
That said, it improves on the first in most respects and I had more fun with it.

Oh, I want this object now! The EO series is one of those that I can't pinpoint why it eats my soul the way it does, but I have to keep playing it. However, I do have to say it's not nearly as hard as, say, Dark Spire. That one made me want to chuck my DS...

The first trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsz_ndFQ-dI) is making the rounds. Although it's almost entirely devoid of gameplay footage, at least it offers a nice sampling of new artwork.

Pardon a little thread necromancy, but Atlus has finally announced Etrian Odyssey 3: the Drowned City (http://twitter.com/AtlusUSA/status/14799441098) for a US release.

Sadly, the tweet seems not long enough to include a street date. Atlus these days usually announces games months in advance of release — P3P got its date something like four months ago.

Artbook whores rejoice, Atlus is releasing a 60-page "Forest of Eternity" artbook (http://www.atlus.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7511) to those that preorder.
That has me seriously debating whether or not I should pick up multiple copies. I love the art of the franchise, and I bet it could be worth something down the road.

I had a gift card with that preorder written all over it. I can't say I'm the biggest EO art fan around, but for $7? Why the heck not? :P

This makes up for not bringing over the first 110 page artbook of EO 1 and 2.
I'll take two.

You'd think that Etrian Odyssey is Atlus's biggest RPG franchise by the way they keep including extras into EO3.
They are adding a dual-sided "Explorer's Poster" inside each copy (http://www.atlus.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7773) of the game - on top of the artbook for preorders.
I kinda get the feeling that no one is preordering the game, so they keep adding content to entice holdouts.

I still haven't ordered my copy of MOM; this one has to wait until after that. But yeah, they're coming across as a bit desperate. Funny. I don't give a damn about packs-in the way some of you do (I mean, really: Stupei's hat?), but it won't stop me from picking this game up.
(I mean, really: Stupei's hat?)
Don't be hating on the best hat ever made. Sure beats this silly map.

They're running a contest to get rid of the extra hats they have left over :)
Sure beats this silly map.
I figure the skill tree charts would be helpful.

Just got the robo-call saying I can pick up the game tomorrow. So who's going to pick this up with all the fancy extras this week?
I really enjoyed the main battle music from 1 and 2, so I went and spoiled myself on the third game's battle theme. ...And on first impression, I got to say it's a step down from the previous games. It sounds like Megaman music, without that hard driving baseline from the previous games. But perhaps I'm not being open minded enough at first listen.

Amazon's in the process of shipping my copy, so it'll arrive tomorrow or Wednesday.
I think the first battle theme is a big step up from the previous two games. Very catchy, especially once the second part kicks in. As usual, the PC-88 and Arranged versions from the soundtracks are better still, but the DS does a good enough job.

Just finished the first mission, which is always "map out B1". The game unlocks sea voyages after the mission is done, so I'm about to head out on the high seas.
As usual, I created my five member party based on my favorite female character designs of whichever classes. (I know I can't be the only one who does this :P ) So my party consists of Princess, Ninja, Buccaneer, Arbalist, and Farmer.
I haven't tried it out yet, but I think I'm going to like the "autoplay" feature. Bascially, you just set up a route on the map, and when you enter the route that you made, it will auto walk you to wherever you chose the route to end. Definitely beats manually walking through floors you're done with.
Overall, same old EO goodness. Even the battle theme is slowly warming up to me.

Forgot to mention -
I love the awesomely sinister look the new item shop proprietor has :)
And Missy the bartender is all kinds of :nosebleed:

As usual, my copy's being held in shipping limbo. :\

My new party of gladiator, hoplite, buccaneer, princess and monk are making some nice headway into the dungeon, and all my old exploration reflexes are coming back. I can't wait til the shoguns get unlocked; they look like mature versions of the ronin from EO1 and 2, judging from the artbook.
Time to put all my other DS titles on hold for a few months...
