A new Trailer (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/japanese-1937-valkyria-chronicles/59938?r=1) showed up on GT.
Looks pretty good, for being a PSP game. It seems they are doing more with "movie" style cutscenes...
Also the new Valkyria looks nuts. Lets hope this one doesn't kill herself

There's one extra we will most likely miss out on when it gets localized by the way:
http://www.qj.net/qjnet/psp/phantasy-star-portable-2-save-file-unlocks-emilia-in-valkyria-chronicles-2.html
I don't really care about the character, but the extra missions would have been nice. The only hope is that they'll add it as DLC.
Personally I don't know if I'll get the Japanese version or not - if I do, I'll probably be able to find a savegame I can download.

I have mixed feelings about this (http://www.siliconera.com/2010/01/07/valkyria-chronicles-2-has-even-more-valkyria-chronicles-cameos/). (spoiler)
I really don't see how they're going to do this. I guess bonus characters don't have to make sense, plot-wise. But Isara... <3

Huh? Do you want Hatsune Miku or something? Actually, put it down as a wishlist since she was wearing a Gallia uniform in Project DIVA.

Given everyone else appearing, they might as well add her as a downloadable, bonus character.

New information regarding VC2's downloadable content. (http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q1-2010/013110a.html)
It won't all be available just by downloading from the PSN, or at least not in Japan. I expect some of it will be handled differently here. In Japan, some of it is obtained by using passwords from the VC2 blog (like using Maximillian and Selvaria). If we get that content at all (which we probably will), I expect that to either be downloadable from the PSN or the passwords offered some other way (like pre-order bonuses).
The other two methods involve saved data from other games, one from the original Valkyria Chronicles (which lets you use Isara) and the other from Phantasy Star Portable 2. I expect those to be handled the same way here, though I'm hoping at least the Phantast Star stuff is also available from the PSN without requiring the game data. I don't care about the character you get, but I want to be able to play the extra missions.

Playing it now ... there's like no story at all. You're just going to the military school and doing mostly mock battles.
I'm sure there'll be something down the line but so far (about 3 hours) there's nothing.
No wonder they were able to bring the sequel out so fast.

I'm waiting for it to show up on the PSN Store. That way I can download it to my PSP and my brothers so we can play ad-hoc battles together.

Picked up my game at GS today, but there weren't able to give me the "preorder bonus" that was supposed to print on my receipt. Some excuse about some system being down, so I have to go back tomorrow or whenever to pick up the extra content.
Unlocked a character by putting my clear save of VC1 on my memory stick, and did a "Link Data" in VC2. Too bad it's a character that will completely kill the believability of the story; so I'm not going to use them - at least not on the first playthrough.
Want to get a little further before impressions; also need to sort out my favorite girls list. But here's something:
There's a Nelson in this game too! ;)

Wait, what? ... Argh, there's two bonus missions that get by pre-ordering the game from GameStop. That's.... annoying. Including actual game content like that as bonus content for pre-ordering at a specific store kind of pisses me off.
....And apparently there was an artbook for pre-ordering the original game at GameStop. Dammit, I wouldn't have bought VCII at GameStop for just two missions, but an artbook? Oh hell yes, and now I'm really annoyed that I missed out on it.
Edit: But if this listing is real, I can get this book (http://www.amazon.com/Valkyria-Chronicles-Design-Archive-Sega/dp/1926778162/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1283286621&sr=1-2) and that would make up for it. I'm rather skeptical that its real, but might as well order it just in case.

Picked it up and while I haven't played much yet, the gameplay mechanics seem quite close to the original, in a good way. I guess due to the PSP's smaller processing power, the maps are fairly small (although you'll fight across several small maps in a stage), resulting in the removal of the sniper class and splitting the engineer class into a sort of medic engineer (with a mean machine pistol I enjoy finishing off enemies with) and a dopey mine-removing, no-range-attack shieldman class I see very little point to. Rest of the classes are like the original, but can be developed down branching paths, like weapons development in the original. Apparently your characters cannot permanently die through your incompetence on the battlefield, which actually kind of disappoints me.
I do like that the enemy threat of the game (barring abrupt plot twists) is something that develops quite naturally from a certain event at the end of the first game.

Yeah, same here. Although I did go ahead and use the "tank sticker" bonus. Someone in the motor pool must be a maudlin fan of Squad 7, right?
The main character is an idiot. Opening scene spoilers: "I'm sorry to tell you, your brother is dead." "I disbelieve! Also, sign me up!" But the others are fairly fun. One of your units is a creepy stalker girl! Win!

The Armour Tech class is actually pretty awesome. Since the shield makes for running up to shocktroopers without worrying about dying in the process and killing things in one hit, yeah I like this class (if the feeling that this class may be broken).
Anyway played a fairly good amount so far. I've even had a go at the multiplayer portion (co-op) with my brother. It's actually quite fun, if a bit clunky. If Sega can refine the gameplay mechanics for the online system a bit more, it's sure to be a great addition to the next game.

Well, I'll have to give them a chance, then; although I haven't gotten deep enough into the game to get maps that call for a fully diversified force yet. But seriously, this is (some kind of) 1937; these guys should at least have pistols!

Also, what's up with making the character an Armored Unit? You'd think it would be an Engineer. Well, if she was alive she'd be a zombie; so I guess I'd put that in an armor an send it in battle. If only for the psychological warfare.

Up to March already and now have open up the branching skills tree for my troops. So far I was only able to upgrade Anisette to a Veteran Trooper. I'm not sure if this incentive to make you use your favourite units is a good thing, but I do know you have to work hard to upgrade them to a higher class.
Anyway, so far my favourites are:
Anisette Nelson - she is Edy's sister afterall.
Melissa Dalen - she stalks Zeri and she's funny.
Magari - the shy type, and a Darcsen too.
Mischlitt - the loner, wears glasses, and a Darcsen too.
Darscen girls are still hot.

Finish April and now onto level 2 type missions.
I would say though, the April story mission where you have multiple stages and needing to capture a camp in each one with a boss running like a scout with the power of a Fencer was evil. Thanksfully the AI isn't too smart otherwise I would have thrown my PSP in rage. Tanks are now overrated, and using an APC equiped with a flamethrower/gattling unit, makes killing a lot of fodder easier.

..or even better - load up your APC with a Lancer from the get go - drive the APC around, and if you need to make things go boom - just get out the lancer. enemy tank goes away, and lancer can load back into the APC.

Well it's definitely being made. The teaser site can be found here (http://code1935.jp/) and it's going to be at TGS next week. The big mystery is, of course, the platform. As the teaser site URL suggests the game takes place in the same year as the original, a lot of people are making the assumption that it will be a PS3 game. Then again, the sequel did well on PSP in Japan...

My strategy there took three turns.
1. Charge beyond Dirk with a lancer and take out his APC. Then take the base and withdraw. Deploy my Fencer (Mischlitt) from the base and destroy the big guy.
2. Deploy fencer on third map and destroy the APC. Move APC into third map, and take a wrong turn. Whilst trying to figure out routes, take out one of the V2's with Missy.
3. APC rush the extraction point.

Also, Question One: It's actually possible to take down Dirk?!

See the vehicle beside him? If you take it out (you'll need a lancer) then the barrier surrounding him disappears, allowing you to do damage to him

You'll probably need two. I took my tank and parked it between Dirk and the enemy base. Then took one lancer and ran towards the base using my tank as a shield :)

I'm up to September now (pushing 40 hours :sd:) and I don't think I've ran into anything quite so brutal as those two since. Admittedly, there's been a couple which might have been that difficult without the right character classes (there was one in particular which I have no idea how you'd clear without 2-3 Fencers), but nothing that has made me want to snap the PSP in half.

So, Saturday I was stuck in a localized power outage for most of the afternoon. Fortunately, I had my PSP handy.
You already know how this story is going to end.
Anyway, made my way through a few missions and opened up the character missions for Mischlitte and whoever the girl is who's rough on her little brother. Both of which seem like emergencies that need to be taken care of immediately, but which I bet I can leave for months if I want.
I suspect I'm not quite ready for Mischlitte's mission with only one upgraded character (Gunner class--I'm not so lucky trying to use her aggressively, given the spread of her range means most of her shots miss; but defensively she can be quite startlingly deadly.) and not deploying a tank left me with no way of getting past the ice, and thus I had to charge straight up their noses--a rather epic battle with much scrambling and heroic risk-taking. Not to mention luck. And of course, just as I realized the momentum had at last taken a sharp turn my way, the PSP battery gave out.

I took the April one down on my first shot - even stopping to defeat the nasty man, but I did lose two units including the Zanber (my APC).
What happened was I cornered him between Avan and my Van. The problem is, Avan, who was a fencer, clobbered him, but also damaged the APC. Eventually we took him down, but immediately after taking him down, the turret tried to shoot Avan, and the stray bullet was enough to blow up the Zanber, complete with Reimer inside.
If they had survived it wouldn't have taken as long as it did, but regardless - a win is a win.

Not that I've found - the fact that I can't remember the particulars of any of them just goes to show that none of them infuriated me quite as much as that one did.

Just finish August, and I have to say if you haven't planned it carefully (and with a bit of dumb AI luck), you will be slaughtered.

And as I've noted, I finish August's missions. The mission was certainly tough if you didn't plan it right. I got beaten on my first go, but on my second try, knowning what was expected, manage to win (with a lot of sheer dumb AI luck) by killing everything in 4 turns.
Now onto spoilery stuff:
Fuck you SEGA. Again, you had to kill off another character I actually liked (even if Juliana was just an NPC). Yes, I actually like that tsundere ojou-sama.
No surprise also that Dirk was Avan's brother. What I don't get is, why make an army of artificial Valkyrias when you have Alicia, Aliasse and probably countless other hidden Valkyrias in your country who have proven to be far more stronger than an army of drones. Ah well, the Gallian military, proven once again not to be the smartest army in the world.

Ooooh, I remember that one now. I think that one actually took me a few attempts, but that was more down to me resetting the game when the first turn didn't go the way I wanted it rather than me necessarily losing. I probably could have taken one of those aborted attempts all the way given the right ratio of patience and luck.
It wasn't as frustrating as April, though.

Yeah it wasn't frustrating as April. It just involves using a few Lancers and a flamethrower equipped APC. :)

Ho hoh! April mission complete, first try! (Essentially, I was lucky. Also, I kept inadvertantly opening up charater missions and doing them, so I had enough experience to get all my units to level 10 by this point.) I used the APC for icebreak (since the game was all "Hint hint, you might want ICEBREAK, hint hint!"), and put a flamethrower on it because I quite liked flamethrowers in VC1. However, I keep forgetting you can load units on the vehicle, and also I discovered that icebreak doesn't actually break ice, so my infantry was going to have to march the long way around after all--and basically my APC was really vulnerable there and had better run away down the hill right away. So the next turn when the general showed up in the northern camp, I was positioned to take a chance and drive up to see what he thought of flamethrowers. (Answer: "Eh.") Pretty much spent my entire run of CP (he ducks!) taking him out then and there. Meanwhile Mischelitt and Anisette are in the ice caves doing their nails and dealing with obstreperous boys now and then and wondering if they're ever going to get a chance.
10 turns, D rank, and in spite of my early break I still got Avan and one other character hospitalized, which made the post mission cutscenes a little weird.

Alright, finally got started with this.
The first two "missions" (such as they were) are done, and right now I'm going around meeting the squad.
Lancers, Engineers, Armored Techs (thats new...), Shocktroo*spittake* ANISETTE NELSON!?
You have got to be fucking kidding me? She has a sister?!

I'm not sure if sister is really quite strong enough a descriptor...
Just bare in mind that repeated use of the same character unlocked their character events and character missions, not that I imagine that I really have to suggest that you deploy the likes of Anisette as much as possible. It is worth making sure you cycle your character deployments later on, though, as completing the character missions exchanges one of their worthless potentials with something decent.

I love Edy and all, but I don't know if the world is prepaired to handle two of her.
(as a side note, I went ahead and unlocked Edy's squad, Isara and Selvaria, but I have no intention on actually using them very much. Probably just for messing around later)

Huh. A silver haired, red eyed girl hanging out with a creepy scientist lady. Thats totally not going to be a plotpoint later. No way.
Anyway, got the first Anisette event. It greatly demonstrated something I really like about this game's...uhh...visual style, I guess. Seeing Avan's "window" tackling Anisette was hilarious.
I definitely like the increased squadmate presence.

I'm walking most maps these days with just two characters. Alexis as a Mauer, Avan as an Elite Fencer.

I like this game but here are 2 things I do not like about it random certificates and diplomas, and all but 2 or 3 of the orders cost some much that they are worthless.

OK, now I'm grinding my units to get them to the Elite status. Gotta do it before I hit the 3 star missions.
Anyone picked up the DLC? There's one map in the DLC where the credits you get are only Certificates and Diplomas. Great for those are having a hard time getting them.

Marion has unlocked the Weapons Freak potential! Now that was a nice cutscene. :blush1:
And I am cruelly amused that Raymond's cutscene where he expresses doubt about his ability to help people in the field comes right after a mission where running up to someone to apply first aid resulted in shots being taken at Raymond that wound up hitting (and taking out) the person he was trying to help.

Uhh...I got Anisette's mission, and got killed. *sigh* I should be less daring.
Also annoying I can't make Anisette a Vt. Trooper because she didn't get a certificate. Whatever.
*gets distracted downloading the extra missions*
VC3 is totally going to have another, hitherto unknown Nelson sister, won't it? This will be like the main running gag of the series.

As long as we don't get a brother I'm happy. Edy and Anisette are awesome! (It's all about Mischlitt though)

They totally need to go back and redo VC1 with all this awesome squadmate stuff.
Honestly, VC2 is really far superior, except that Avan is laaaaaame.
And for some reason the game just doesn't want to give Anisette a goddamn certificate.

It's set in the same timeframe as VC1, so we'll see Edy again, and probably Anisette (since I saw Juliana in some of the recent screenshots).

After completing it, I have to say, I never got the impression from VC1 that Edy was a bad singer. Possibly in a doomed quest for stardom, but not actually hopelessly tone-deaf! I feel a little disappointed.
Also annoying I can't make Anisette a Vt. Trooper because she didn't get a certificate. Whatever.
Certificates don't seem to be available for the personal missions. Maybe they figure fixing potentials is enough of a reward, but it's sort of annoying not being able to get one in a mission that encourages you to use a particular character to their limits. And some of those missions are pretty rough!

The DLC Edy's Detachment made it clear that she is tone-deaf. The only one that enjoyed her singing was Homer.

I'm pretty sure Homer's related to the male lead of MM!
