^______^

Really pleased to see a release date for this, a few weeks earlier than I was expecting, too.

Ouch. Tokikake was a lot less expensive. The BD appears to have a commentary track and some other extras the the DVD doesn't, but the price differential is a bit much.

Will rent it (if available) or wait for a sale. Not going to support price gouging like this.

Price itself isn't too bad if you think of it as a limited edition, but with DVD being much cheaper and the fact that this movie is supposed to be a "family" movie, makes this price tag questionable(I was expecting somewhere between 5000~6000 range). Of course, lack of normal edition is also a problem.

I'm putting this on hold for now. I really wanted to watch it but with this price tag, I am reluctant to pick it up. I was one of those few people who thought Tokikake was a little over-hyped, too, so 'so-so' rating of this movie doesn't help either.

Speaking of theatrical release, I wonder if Mai Mai will be released in BD? I'm actually really interested in that one. It seems to be getting good reviews, too.

What "so-so" rating? I've heard nothing but great things about Summer Wars.

What "so-so" rating? I've heard nothing but great things about Summer Wars.

I thought there were too many comments on 2ch saying "good but not THAT good" or "it sucked(compared to Tokikake)". Also, my general impression was not many of them were enthusiastic about the movie. First two reviews I've read gave it mediocre rating. I think one of the reviewer gave second eva movie 9~10 and SW 6~7. Many of the impressions I've read on Korean sites were saying they were disappointed. So that's where I got "so-so" rating. I'm sure you have your reason to think otherwise... Perhaps you are talking about North American community?

Summer Wars is very good.

True, but if the movie is hyped enough, it's a split between haters and lovers. Summer wars forum didn't really have that, which gave me the impression "many of them weren't too enthusiatic about the movie". I think I've been on 2ch long enough to distinguish between "KTKR!!!" and "It was good". At least compared to EVA, I would say. Anyways, I'm talking about general impression I got from both 2ch and Korean communities.

That's fair enough, then. I wouldn't, however, consider Summer Wars as a typical "let's see what the internet fans think about it" anime movie, though. It maybe didn't have the "blow you away" factor of Eva 2.0, which I would agree was amazing.

Basically, it's not hard to find glowing reviews of the film, if you want to, so I would say don't just give up on the movie without having seen it yourself.

If I went by whatever Internet forums said was good or bad, I wouldn't like anything.

I usually try not to listen to reviews from established critics let alone strangers posting on forums. The only opinion that should matter is your own.

Except you're the one who said:

I don't care what you usually do. Like you said, only my opinion matters. Except mine is different from yours. It didn't premiere in Canada, so I can't have my direct opinion about the movie unless I break the copyright law, which I am not willing to do. So I will depend on reviews and ratings to decide if I should drop $100 on A movie that I haven't watched.

I know some enjoyed it a lot and it's not like I took this movie off from my "must watch" list. But if it costs 10k, it better be worth it. Which is why I mentioned "ratings" in the first place. 'Tis how my blind buy goes...

So? It's hilarious how ppl just read "2ch" and laugh it off. BTW you didn't even see my comment about Korean sites and reviews, didn't you? So how would you blind-buy. Just BLIND BUY? good for you. I'll rely on something, like reviews.

Relax man. I said "usually don't look at reviews" don't try to contradict me.

I was just making an observation that perhaps you should seek more qualified reviews instead of basing your opinions on what a bunch of strangers on the internet think. This film has received some stellar reviews (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/summer-wars) and won multiple awards (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-12-03/summer-wars-vinland-saga-win-media-arts-awards).

But I totally agree with you that $100 is way to much money to drop on a movie you haven't seen (especially when you said you were less than thrilled by TokiKake). Hopefully Warner Bros will bring this to the States at an affordable price so we won't have to wait very long.

Well, you are basically saying, I don't usually read reviews, and don't care about reviews, but I care about this one. Which is the problem, since it is the movie we are talking about.

I find general 2ch reactions quite accurate to my taste. As I have said, I'm not looking at one or two comments, I'm looking at the general flow of the forum and OUTSIDE OF 2CH TOO. And as I have mentioned before, I have no choice but to rely on the internet in this case.

Anyways, why do you guys care about my opinion anyways? Hell, it's not even my opinion about the movie. It's my opinion about if I should BUY the movie or not?

I'm like way fickle when it comes to reviews, when it's something I really like and it gets a good review I'll read it, when it's something I like and gets a negative review I'll throw in this argument that we're having.

If it's something I don't care about I'll probably do what you do and check the reviews.

Does anyone know if Warner Bros ever releases anime, besides for like Gotham Knight.

Warner can be picky (http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3899) as to what gets a BD release. Discounting the older stuff, the only new anime that is coming out from them is Halo Legends IIRC.

Best to hope that Bandai is in a good mood imo.

I'd rather someone other than Bandai get it considering all of their problems lately. They haven't even released The Girl Who Leapt Through Time on Blu-ray yet either.

Funimation does fine with movie Blu-rays, TV series are another matter, so I'd be okay with them for this. Other than Bandai and Funi or possibly Warner or Sony, there really isn't anyone else left for the US.

.

Well if the title didn't sell, don't expect a BD release imo. Escaflowne had no problems getting released. Eureka Seven is on the launching pad so to speak.

Relying on FUNi to release everything popular is like having a monopoly and worse yet just adds onto the backlog of what they should be releasing in the first place.

So I'm still rooting for Bandai.

I don't think TokiKake didn't sell, I'm sure it's because of Bandai's problems that they haven't put on Blu-ray. Im sure they're dying to put it out (As am I)

Hopefully they'll release that soon. But who knows when we'll see Summer Wars in the states.

I must have missed something then because Escaflowne and Sword of a Stranger were both well done IMO. If nothing else, proof that they can handle blu-ray movies as good as the next guy.

I honestly think the reason Tokikake hasn't seen release has more to do with how the new region coding works and the Japanese side of things than Bandai Ent. themselves. It certainly wouldn't be the first show that is still "pending" over here due to HD source license issues.

Will be interesting to see if this ever gets resolved or if Bandai can get themselves back on their feet with their TV series issues first.

I believe chronoclast was making reference to Bandai's issues getting things out [and might I add licensed] more so than any problems with the BDs they released. Kind of hard to put more freight on a ship that already seems to be taking on water...:sd:

Adding to those possibilities could be that Bandai simply doesn't have the licence anymore. Tokikake's release was produced by Bandai but the licence was from Kadokawa USA. With that branch closing a few months ago isn't it possible the licence went back to Kadokawa Japan and Bandai would need to re-licence everything from scratch?
That would mean a lot of work for producing a Blu-Ray if they have to start from scratch.... especially with Bandai's current state.

Now that I think about it, this is probably another series that Bandai didn't get any kind of "HD release clause" in the license that they got in the first place.

Regardless of what Kadokawa or anyone else are doing/planning on doing with the license now.
