View Full Version : Anime and/or Manga Usage Poll
I became curious as to how people split anime/manga time and so on.
If there is official surveys done by industry/companies or other threads like this sorry and can you link them also.
So try to answer the poll and say why.
For myself i watch anime 100% and read no manga.
I tried reading manga on a couple of different occasions but i just do not enjoy it compared to watching anime.

I almost voted the "mostly anime" option but I am so overwhelmingly anime (like, 99%) that I just went with the anime-only option. I mean, sure, I'll read some manga but... almost never. And usually only stuff that I knew about through anime.

I watch more anime, but I like to read manga here and there... and when I do start a manga and/or anime series, I get very, very behind on it quickly.

I watch a fair amount of anime, and read a fair amount of manga. I go through periods of one being more than the other, but not to the extent that I would say I clearly prefer one (although, if pushed, I would say I prefer manga).

I watch more anime (80%), than I read manga (20%). :)
In terms of watching anime versus reading manga, my time is spent pretty much 50-50. In terms of buying anime versus manga, I buy far more manga than I buy anime. I buy manga on nearly a weekly basis. Most of the anime I watch comes from fansubs (unlicensed) or rental (licensed).
thanks for replies so far
is there anyway this can be posted in the manga forum also?
I thought of making a duplicate thread in the manga forum but did not know if that was allowed. :o

I guess it's about the same for me. I buy more manga than anime now, but it goes in fits and starts. I get the variety I want by doing both.

I both watch anime and read manga in about the same amounts with maybe a slight edge to anime.

I personally go through spurts in both directions, kinda like a see-saw. Right now, it would be more anime, but there are times when it's more manga, so I guess it all evens out in the end?

something's reply is mine exactly. I will read manga on occasion, but the amount is negligible compared to the amount of anime I watch, and its almost always because the anime sparked an interest in the manga.

I do both. When I like a franchise, I want to experience it in as many different mediums as possible. Sometimes I'll read the manga first and sometimes after. Often, I'll get impatient with the anime and pick the manga/novels up midway through. One odd thing is I generally don't re-watch anime whereas I will re-read manga.

I almost watch anime exclusively. I have read a little bit of manga, but it is virtually non-existent in my life. So I watch anime only.

This is the same for me, especially if the show is more than 13 episodes long.

I'm in the "watch more anime but read some manga" category. The only manga that I'm reading right now are the Peach-Pit titles (mainly Shugo Chara and Zombie-Loan) and just started reading the Higurashi manga. Though I have to resume reading Negima and Hayate no Gotoku and finish up with Chibi Vampire and Excel Saga.

I watch anime for the most part, although from time to time I still find myself reading manga. Moving pictures and sound will always catch my attention more than just reading static images, but there are exceptions depending on the manga and the artist. For instance, I could never pass up the opportunity to read a Clamp title, since they as a group have drawn/written some fantastic manga.

I've watched about 175 anime titles, but have only read about 35 manga.
So, mostly anime and some manga.

I go about 75% anime to 25% manga, but there are times when I get into a good manga series, i.e. Love Hina, Enchanter and go gaga getting the volumes.

I watch anime far more than I read manga (about 95% to 5%), but since I'm not anime exclusive, I answered "more anime than manga."
I often only read manga that is related to anime I've seen. It's really quite rare for me to read manga that has not had an anime adpation. I could probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of manga series that have not had an anime adaptation that I've read.

I answered "more anime than manga." Even though it's split up like 95% anime, 5 % manga.
I only rarely read manga, I'm way more into anime. There are some manga series that I follow (pretty much the only ones in my sig), but that's about it. I just enjoy watching something much more then reading it. I used to read even less manga, but slowly got a little more into it. Still I only own a handful of series tops, and barely read them. It has to be an AMAZING manga for me to read it. But I can enjoy even half-way decent anime, and totally don't mind watching them. But even if the manga is good, if it doesn't blow my mind, I probally won't be reading it.
Also anyone else think manga is expensive? 10 bucks or more (usually almost 15 since I mostly buy those Viz Siz titles) and I'm done reading it in 30 minutes! Anime is a lot cheaper, and can last a lot longer. I feel I get more bang for my buck that way.

I agree with Sly05; I read manga almost as frequently as I watch anime, particularly since I always like to read a little in bed before going to sleep, and manga has almost completely supplanted my other nighttime bedtime reading (with the exception of a few sci-fi and other novel series, such as by Terry Pratchett). However, I watch more anime titles than I read manga titles, especially as I usually stretch out my manga reading to just a chapter a night, and I always read each new manga volume twice if I enjoy it before shelving it in the collection. I'm more easily driven to marathon anime episodes (DVD purchase or rental), so I end up watching more titles more quickly.
Some anime I watch I prefer to enjoy solely as anime, like Shana and like Higurashi, (or its not available easily via translation or it's an anime original and the manga merely repeats the anime in poorer form), and some titles I prefer as manga, like Ai Yori Aoshi and Azumanga Daioh, often for the artwork or content or pacing (Kou Fumizuki draws women like nobody's business, and the humor in Azumanga Daioh always plays out better in my head from the manga). Some titles I collect in both formats, like Full Metal Panic, Hayate the Combat Butler, and Neon Genesis Evangelion, because I appreciate the differences wrought in both media. For some manga I'm waiting for the anime to be distributed here (Hello, Hidamari/Sunshine Sketch!). :noodle:

I would say generally my ratio of anime to manga is about 70%-30%. I tend to check out everything that is currently airing and at least watch the first episode of 70% of shows that air in a season. With Manga I don't really keep up on what's new and only check out things that catch my eye.. a promo image of the main girl for the fairly recent manga "Good Ending" being one example.
If a new anime gets announced that is based on a manga, most of the time I will check out the manga straight away if there is scans for it to see what the show will be like. If an anime I enjoyed finishes and the manga continues things if possible I'll pick up the manga from where the anime ended or start the manga from the beginning.
Though I do go on manga "binges" at times and just ignore anime for a few weeks and just focus on manga. After reading Unbalance X Unbalance I got interesting in checking out Korean Manhwa and firstly checked out everything else done by Dal Young Im.

I consume more anime than manga. When it comes to manga, most often I read manga that expands on an anime I've already watched. For some reason, if a manga I'm reading has an anime adaptation forthcoming, I will usually drop the manga in favor of the anime, unless it's clear the two completely diverge in terms of content.

I said it's an even split because when it comes down to it, it is. I may not read manga every day, though I generally watch at least one anime episode per day, but when I find the time to read manga, it quickly catches up to the anime viewing for a given week/month.
I would say, however, that my manga reading is probably 60/40 for titles I got into because of the anime (60% having anime adaptations, 40% having no anime tie-in). I don't generally like manga adaptations of anime since those tend to be inferior. In terms of manga adapted into anime, I almost always wind up watching the anime first.

100% anime for me. I like to read regular books, but for some reason I can't stand to read manga (something about the format just doesn't work for me, I'm not sure why).

I'm in the minority, I guess :-) I read far more manga than I watch anime. If I were to try to guess, I'd say 80% manga, 20% anime, and I'll reread a manga series more times in a year than I'll rewatch most manga.

I voted for "I watch more anime but also read some manga.", but I hope to someday be able to vote for "I watch anime and read manga about the same."
Me not having a job and having a huge debt with my public library doesnt help at all, heh xD.

Since July 2009, I'm in the category "I watch more anime but also read some manga." I'm reading mangas that are a continuity to the anime or manga that have no anime at all.
Right now, I'm reading Chrono Crusade, Fruits Basket, Nana, Negima, Skip Beat and Yotsuba.
As I stand now, I find myself reading manga more and more lately... but I still watch anime a tad more often.

I watch much more anime than reading manga, it's probable 80/20. Manga are taking too much shelf space so I can't collect that many series. :relief: Besides many manga series I would like to read are released in Japan only and unfortunately I can't read the language.

95% anime the rest is manga whenever I get around to it mostly. At least I have only 8 as aposed to 11 like before to read XD.

Pretty much entirely Anime. As with others, I do read some Manga, but the amounts are so inconsequential next to the Anime that it might as well be zero. I have perhaps 50 or 60 Manga, compared to thousands of Anime DVD's. What I really need to do is hook up with a girl who has almost all Manga and not many Anime DVD's. We'd have like the ultimate Otaku place. Instead I have a bunch of guys wandering in and out asking to watch After Story with a few random girls seeing if they can borrow Utena. :anger200:

As of late, about the same for both anime and manga. Though I do consider myself more of an anime fan, since a good portion of my manga purchases were made as a result of watching the anime adaptation of a series. Among others, examples include Black Cat, Love Hina, School Rumble, and Hayate the Combat Butler.

I watch more anime but also read some manga.
In the past, I was more or less focused on just anime. However as time passed, I got more into manga. At first it was simple just manga based on anime that I've already watched.
However eventually I started branching out trying out manga without the need to have seen an anime version first. Which is nice because in the case of some series, there is no anime as of yet.
None of Hayate X Blade. None of Kitchen Princess. None of Miracle X Miracle. None of Suzunari. None of Ichiroh. Manga that I could have missed out on if not for the branching out.
Even with this, Anime still had the advantage of the head start as it were. Thus I had to vote the way I did.
