I'd have to give the title to Uncharted: Among Thieves this year. Unfortunately, there was no Mega Man 9 in 2009 that just completely blew every other game away.
Couldn't give it to Metal Gear Solid 4 because you were forced to play Snake as an old man and the ending was pretty downbeat. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was too short and had a plot that was too ludicrous. Could we please get some single-player mission DLC that has Private Ramirez shooting it out with Russian invaders in a giant shopping mall or supermarket?
Not a fan of "family oriented" games, so Little Big Planet and Super mario Bros. Wii were out of the question.

Well, plus MGS4 came out last year. I'm having a hard time deciding, but I have to say it's between Borderlands and Dragon Age Origins.

The most memorable games I've played in the last 12 months actually came out at the tail end of 2008, so I can't really count those.
The sentimentalist in me wants to nominate Katawa Shoujo Act 1, but that's neither a full game nor fully interactive in the customary sense.
So I'd say it's down to Batman: Arkham Asylum versus Assassin's Creed II, with a slight nod to AC2 for taking an equally-engrossing main storyline and bolstering it with interesting side missions.
I don't know if I'll have a Game of the Year for 2009. Nothing I've played that was released this year has really blown me away. I thought maybe it would be the new Professor Layton game, but I got away from it and never came back. Then I thought it would be NSMBW, but there's just enough about that game that isn't awesome that I can't give it the nod. Xedge and Valkyria Chronicles were disappointing. Dragon Quest V was largely excellent but didn't reach the standard set by DQ4 last year.
So … uh … er … Final Fantasy VII dropped on Playstation Network. Done. ;)

For me, my Game of the Year comes down to a battle between Batman: Arkham Asylum and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. While I love both titles, Batman didn't make me curse rather loudly at stupid design decisions like Uncharted 2 did with its few remaining goon arenas. I also never had trouble getting Batman to do what I wanted him to do, unlike Nathan Drake who I would have problems getting to stick to cover at the most inopportune times (he'd do a roll instead of sliding into cover). Batman is also an incredible effort from a completely unknown studio, one that even managed to do the impossible and make stealth fun to me.
He's The Goddamn Batman (TM), and he's my Game of the Year.

I'm trying to think of what I'd name as my game of 2009.. The game that immediatly jumped out at me was Valkyria Chronicles, until I remembered that it was released in October last year.
Looking at my game shelf, there are several I enjoyed but none of them as a standout game. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 was a good game but not more than that. Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires was also good but flawed. Eyepet was innovative but shallow, whilst Cross Edge was just shallow.
I'm left to decide between two RPGs, both good but not brilliant. The first is Disgaea 3, released here in February. Fun story and hours of potentail grinding ahead of me when they eventually release the trophy patch in the UK, but I'm gonna give my own personal nod this year to Suikoden Tierkreis. It's not a traditional Suikoden, but at its core it's an interesting RPG with a traditional Suikoden style plotline. Now if the voice acting was better and the main character was less of a loser, then they would have improved it greatly!

I'd have to go with Mana Khemia II. If only because it was the only English game I bought and played a good bit of in 2009. Also, Ulrika. <3

I don't have a goty either
Cross Edge was enjoyable, but not a good game
Pokemon Platinum was great, but I'd like to favor Heart Gold/Soul Silver instead, even though they haven't been released domestically nor have I played it yet.
Street Fighter IV and Blazblue were fun, but only for fifteen minutes.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story was funny, but not goty material.
Zelda: Spirit Tracks so far feels like Phantom Hourglass.
Punch-Out and Murumasa are great but on the short side.
Silent Hill ON ICE!!! I didn't put enough time into to judge just yet.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii was amazing and had it's flaws. Like Nintendo's lazy development. But if I had to give anything goty, it would be this one.
Too bad Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, both the first and second version weren't released in 2009. That game alone is better than anything else I mentioned.

I would like to say Uncharted 2, but I haven't played the game yet. I'd have to choose Infamous followed by Batman: Arkham Asylum. Infamous has been the only game that I enjoyed so much that I went back to play it again this year.

Bayonetta is definitely my game of the year.
1. Bayonetta (JP)
2. Mobile Suit Gundam: Battlefield Record U.C. 0081 (JP)
3. Batman: Arkham Asylum
4. Demon's Souls
5. Uncharted 2
6. Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam NEXT PLUS (JP)
7. Ryu ga Gotoku 3 (JP)
8. Assassin's Creed II
9. SD Gundam G Generation Wars (JP)
10. The Beatles: Rock Band

Since I don't play the type of game that usually takes the nod (say, Batman, or Uncharted 2), my picks wouldn't impress anyone.
Top of my list would have to be Dragon Age:Origin though.
Other games I've thoroughly enjoyed, but even I don't think they are goty worthy
Cross Edge
Mana Khemia 2
Blazblue
Tekken 6
The last ones here, I don't really remember what year they came out, this or last, so I've separated them.
Star Ocean (erm, the 360 one)
Ar Tonelico 2
Fallout 3
Persona 4
I'll also throw out Aion. Yeah, it's pvp oriented, and I don't particularly like pvp, but the rest of the game I do like, quite a bit. Even when i reach the point where I reaclly can't play anymore (without going pvp), I'll still look back on the part I could play with fondness.

You know, as great as Uncharted, Batman and Assassin's Creed were, none of them were the game I enjoyed the most.
For me, the game of the year, despite all its issues and problems is the only game to make me cry twice.
Ar tonelico II: Sekai ni Hibiku Shoujo Tachi no Metafalica

Hmm... only one game really comes to mind as something that ate my soul: FF4: The After Years. It easily gets my pick for game of the year. Ah, how I remember waiting impatiently for the next set of DLC for that...

I have to side with the majority and say Uncharted 2. It really was the best game I played this year and one of the best I've ever played.

Tough call between COD:MW2 and Batman Arkham Asylum.
