The year is coming to an end and I think it's time to make some lists of some of the best and worst.(you can also add other lists or omit lists if you don’t have any to fill up the list). Before posting, please read first:

This list is refering to anime that was shown/released in Japan in 2009 not US (so if you're listing R1 anime, it must fulfil the criteria below):
TV series shown in 2008 and concluding in 2009 may be included. For ongoing TV shows that have gone on for years (like the Shounen Jump stuff), please only refer to the more recent episodes shown in 2009.
For OAVs, you may include earlier ones as long as the last episode was released after Xmas 2008.
For movies, you may include 2008 movies where the R2 was released in 2009.You may also make more lists than what is listed below

Top 10 Favorite Anime of 2009

#1 Clannad After Story
#2 K-On!
#3 Hayate no Gotoku!!
#4 Bakemonogatari
#5 Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei

There are others I liked, but only these five stand out enough to rank them.

Top 10 Least Favorite Anime of 2009
None. I didn't hate any anime that aired in 2009, although there were a bunch I didn't care for.

I'll be doing my favorites list pretty soon, when the Currently Watching Winter thread pops up.

But a quick top 10, with 2 cour Fall '08 shows counting as '09, as I usually do. And only 1 cour Fall '09 shows count, two cour will be 2010. So no Railgun yet for example. These are the ones that really stood above the rest.

Top 10 Favorite Anime of 2009

1) Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2009)
2) Clannad ~After Story~
3) Toradora!
4) Maria-sama ga Miteru 4th
5) K-ON!
6) Bakemonogatari
7) Gundam 00 S2
8) Spice and Wolf II
9) ...? Well, one ep left but probably Sasameki Koto. Otherwise, Kimi ni Todoke if it really is only one cour. It's a bit early to place one cour Fall '09 shows yet since they're not all done or of a confirmed length. Actually, Todoke might be as high as 7, if 13 is the end and it's suitably awesome. If it is one cour then Sasameki woul replace SoraAge, I guess.
10) Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai

Bakemonogatari was ahead of K-ON! until Shaft totally flubbed the webcast-only eps. It's obvious to me they've totally shelved 14 and 15 until... god, the BD/DVD release, at this rate? I wonder if they'll even put them online at all at this point.

There's a good chance this won't actually be the order when I do my full year in review. =P Only the top 6 are set. 7-10 are a total crap shoot, they could go any way and I wish I could stick Saki in there too. K-ON! and Marimite are really close.

Top 10 of 2009
1) Toradora!
2) Maria-sama ga Miteru 4
3) Clannad ~ After Story
4) K-On!
5) Bakemonogatari
6) The Melancholoy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2009 (minus the middle 5 episodes of Endless 8)
7) Minami-ke Okaeri
8) Spice and Wolf II
9) Canaan
10) Umineko no Naku Koro Ni

I left out series from the fall season that haven't ended yet just incase they go down hill in their second half. The strong contendors that come to mind are Kimi no Todoke and Railgun. While Bakemonogatari is technically not concluded yet either, who knows when the last two episodes are coming so I'm counting it as complete for now.

Disappointments
1) The middle five episodes of Endless Eight
2) Phantom ~ Requiem of the Phantom (mainly for the last arc and conclusion)
3) Rideback (same as above)

Best Single Episode
1) Mahou Sensei Negima Another World episode 1

Best Female Lead
1) Taiga Aisaka (Toradora)
2) Hitagi Senjogahara (Bakemonogatari)
3) Horo (Spice and Wolf II)

Best Male Lead
1) Tomoya Okazaki (Clannad ~ After Story)
2) Ryuuji Takasu (Toradora)
3) Kyon (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2009)

I've been "refreshing" myself on what aired in 2009 in order to organize my list. Apparently I have more than ten titles in the Top Ten list. I guess I'll either trim the list a bit more. Or I'll make the cut-off point a higher number like Fifteen or Twenty .

Not that it matters much as I still have a few series to wrap up in 2009. May as well see what lists those series will ultimately be a part of first.

In general, I find that it's usually the lower slots that are harder to decide what to fill with. Since the lower I get the fewer intense favorites I have remaining.

14 is...

Scheduled to be done within this year, but the broadcast will be in January.

Also I really don't know why SHAFT flubbing the webcast places it below K-oN! When you rewatch the two shows in say 2 years time on Bluray or whatever it's not like you're going to go "I like Bake better... but SHAFT annoyed me with the webcasts so K-on! is ranked above it!".

Favourite anime:
1. Clannad After Story
2. Fullmetal Alchemist - Brotherhood
3. Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
4. K-On!
5. Seitokai no Ichizon

Least favourite anime:Eh, hard to say... I generally only watched whatever interested me, and there wasn't really any that I found to be downright bad... Oh, right, there was one:
1. Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu Purezza (I never particularly cared for the first season either, but at least that one was somewhat entertaining. This was just plain bad.)

Best ending:
Clannad After Story

Most disappointing:
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2009 (Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody and Sigh were awesome, but Endless Eight was just painful.)

Funniest anime:
1. Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
2. Clannad After Story
3. K-On!
4. Seitokai no Ichizon

Tear jerker:
1. Clannad After Story

Best soundtrack:
1. Clannad After Story

Best straight pairing:
1. Tomoya and Nagisa (Clannad After Story)

Best animation:
1. Clannad After story

Best male character:
1. Okazaki Tomoya (Clannad After Story)
2. Sugisaki Ken (Seitokai no Ichizon)

Best female character:
1. Ibuki Fuko (Clannad After Story)
2. Furukawa Nagisa (Clannad After Story)
3. Okazaki Ushio (Clannad After Story... Biased? Nah.)

Worst male character:
1. Ayase Yuuto (Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu... Seriously, could this guy get any more bland?)

Best villain of 2009
1. Pride (Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood... He might have only appeared like, last week, but that guy scares the crap out of me.)

Best comedic moment
1. Clannad After Story episode 20... Nuclear tights. That is all.

On the other hand I have no idea what 2 years from now has to do with today. I have no idea what I'll think of these shows two years from now, beyond being certain I'll still like them.

I also wouldn't say I "like Bake better", that was only true for a limited period of time (peaking immediately after ep 12). But a lot of factors go into how I'd position one show against another, and things like narrative momentum and satisfying closure (which can be had even in open endings) are extremely important to me.

The way Shaft has handled Tsubasa Cat has had a serious impact on the first and delayed the latter to some unknown date. It's really not much different from the way that huge delays from subbers have sunk enjoyable shows for me before (see Mission E, Daughter of Twenty Faces, Mouyrou no Hako). There's also the way they dropped the ball on Nadeko Snake Pt 2. I'm sure the BD version is a huge improvement but that's not relevant to how I feel right now.

Well, not that Bakemono has been "sunk". It's right there at #6 despite intense competition (3 of the 5 series ahead of it are sequels/revamps to huge favorites), and I've spent $500 or whatever on the BDs and don't regret it one bit.

Anyway, my feelings on it would actually be a lot stronger if episode 12 hadn't been one of the best episodes of anime ever. That's significantly mitigated my annoyance.

So right now, I simply feel slightly more positive as a whole on K-ON! than Bakemonogatari. That's all, really.

Top 10 Anime that began airing and finished in 2009

1) SoraKake Girl
2) Seitokai no Ichizon
3) Full Metal Alchemist 2
4) Hetalia Axis Powers
5) Canaan
6) Bakemonogatari
7) Saki
8) Gendai Maho
9) Natsu no Arashi
10) Sengoku Basara

Top 5 that started in 2008 and finished in 2009

1) Clannad After Story
2) To Aru Majutsu no Index
3) Toradora
4) Golgo 13
5) Gundam 00 season 2

There is a lot that's not on here for various reasons. K-on was cute, but nothing really special. I've not really finished a few shows that might have been on here. Overall, there were some pleasing shows. However, 2009 is one of the worst years I've seen so far in terms of variety.

Best 10 in no particular order

Asure Cryin'
Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari
Cross Game
Darker Than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini
Eden of The East
Maria-sama ga Miteru 4th Season
The Tower of Druaga ~the Sword of Uruk~
Bakemonogatari
Koukaku no Regios
K-ON!

Worst list, I'd have trouble with. Usually, if I couldn't stand something, I'd drop it. Might be 5 minutes in, might be 5 episodes in. Kind of hard to judge a show when you don't really watch it.

Instead, I'll go with something else

Biggest Dissapointment

Tayutama -Kiss on my Deity- - This show had so much potential, only to be crushed by it's low budget. I still liked the show, but it really needed to be reanimated from start to finish.

Princess Lover - Started strong, but got mired in silliness and pointlessness towards the end. I didn't even care if I finished it.

Valkyria Chronicles - Not a bad show, by any stretch. I thought it was decent. But, it just felt like it could have been handled much better than it was.

My Favorite Shows of 2009
1) Toradora!
2) Bakemonogatari
3) Umineko no Naku Koro ni
4) Kimi ni Todoke
5) Suzumiya Haruhi 2009/Haruhi-chan/Churuya-san
6) K-ON!
7) Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei
8) To Aru Majutsu no Index/Railgun
9) Sasameki Koto
10) Kanamemo

My Least Favorite Shows of 2009
1) 11eyes - The only show in the past few years that I just really just didn’t like at all. I haven’t seen the last episode yet, but I don’t see any way this thing can possibly redeem itself. I don’t like the characters, the story, the execution; I should have dropped the series a long time ago, but I wanted to watch as much anime as possible from the season and had plenty of time on my hands.
2) Element Hunters - A kids’ show teaching you about the periodic table with a Digimon-like theme. At first I enjoyed the novelty of it, but ended up dropping the show after the 4th episode because it was just boring.
3) Miracle Train - This one isn’t exactly fair, but I wanted at least three items per list. I tried watching this series pretty late in the season because I initially thought it wouldn’t be for me. Well, I got about 2 minutes into it when the guys started introducing themselves and decided my first impression was right. Quickest dropped series ever.

Most Mediocre shows of 2009
1) Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu: Purezza - I really liked the first season of Nogizaka Haruka, but season 2 ran a little dry about half way through. The “make Haruka an idol” part of the series was just lame, really dragged the series down in my opinion.
2) Seitokai no Ichizon - I’ve always found it kind of strange that I wasn’t a big fan of Lucky Star and this series has about the same problem with me. It feels like it’s all reference and no substance most of the time. I get the references, but they don’t really strike me as really funny most of the time. From my standpoint it seems really normal and basic.
3) Umi Monogatari - The series had some heart, but in the end it just didn’t feel like anything very special. Sorry.

Biggest Surprises of 2009 (Shows I liked a lot more than I thought I would)
1) Thriller Restaurant - After the horridly bland Element Hunters I was a little hesitant to pick up another show focused so directly at a younger audience. But Thriller Restaurant has been a joy to watch. It has such a wonderful simple charm to it.
2) Yumeiro Patissiere - A shoujo series about making sweets. Very adorable and fun.
3) Kimi ni Todoke - When I went into this series I knew it was a shoujo series and nothing else. I didn’t expect it to be one of the best shoujo series I’ve ever seen with my favorite female characters of the Fall 2009 season.
Honorable Mention: Trapeze (Kuchu Buranko)

Favorite Female Leads of 2009
1) Taiga Aisaka (Toradora!) - She became my number 1 favorite female character. Not much else to say.
2) Hitagi Senjogahara (Bakemonogatari) - Tsundere-chan: sexy, bold, a little damaged, awesome.
3) Sawako “Sadako” Kuronuma (Kimi ni Todoke) - One of the sweetest most adorable girls I’ve seen in a story.
Honorable Mention: Kobato Hanato (Kobato.)

Favorite Male Leads of 2009
1) Kyon (Suzumiya Haruhi series) - Haruhi and Nagato didn’t quite have as strong of performances in the 2009 and Haruhi-chan material in my opinion, but Kyon was in his usual top form.
2) Ryuuji Takasu (Toradora!) - The best wife I girl could ever ask for.
3) Koyami Araragi (Bakemonogatari) - An all around good guy. How he interacts with the rest of the cast is just awesome.
Honorable Mention: Dr. Ichiro Irabu (Trapeze)

Favorite Couples of 2009
1) Taiga and Ryuuji (Toradora!) - Obvious pick.
2) Senjogahara and Araragi (Bakemonogatari) - Obvious pick, too.
3) Mikoto Misaka and Kamijou Touma (To Aru Kagaku no Railgun) - Not so obvious pick. They may not be a real couple, but Railgun vs. Imagine Breaker in episode 4 was one of my favorite things in the Fall season. Their chemistry is just wonderful. After that episode the series could do no wrong.
Honorable Mention: Rena Ryuuguu and Tomitake/Takano/Ooishi (episode 5 of Higurashi Rei)

Favorite Casts of 2009
1) Bakemonogatari - Loveable characters all around with exquisite dialog and interaction.
2) K-ON! - Separately none of the K-ON! girls make it into my top 20, but they really go great together along with the supporting cast.
3) Umineko no Naku Koro ni - Many colorful and interesting characters who have many sides to their personalities. As the story digs deeper you get to know each character that much more.
Honorable Mention: Sasameki Koto

Most Memorable Moments of 2009 (No descriptions in case of spoilers, people who’ve seen it will know what I mean, I think)
1) Endless Eight and the Bitching (Suzumiya Haruhi 2009)
2) Christmas Teddy Bear Santa (Toradora!)
3) The Musical Episode (Kanamemo)
4) Flying/Exploding Panties (Sora no Otoshimono)
5) Mustang vs. Lust (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
6) Trap of the Year (Sasameki Koto)
7) Dating Sim Parody Opening (Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuuutsu)
8) Tsundere Beato (Umineko no Naku Koro ni)
9) Naked NEET Army (Eden of the East)
10) Tan vs. Tan (Shakugan no Shana-tan Revenge)

Favorite Theme Songs of 2009
1) Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari (Bakemonogatari ED)
2) Ringo Mogire Beam! (Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OP)
3) Kata Tsubasa no Tori (Umineko no Naku Koro ni OP)
4) Holy Night (Toradora! Ep 19 Insert Song)
5) Let it out (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood ED2)
6) Don’t say “lazy” (K-ON! ED)
7) Super Drive (Suzumiya Haruhi 2009 OP)
8) only my rail gun (To Aru Kagaku no Railgun OP)
9) Lost Boy (Thriller Restaurant ED)
10) Free (Basquash! ED1)

01. GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class 02. K-ON! 03. Hidamari Sketch X 365 (Special) 04. Clannad ~After Story~ 05. Toradora 06. Bakemonogatari 07. Kanamemo 08. Umi Monogatari 09. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei 17. Minami-Ke Okaeri 18. A Certain Magical Index

First, I know there are 18 titles in that list, but I'm having trouble trimming it down any further. Second, the order only matters for the first three titles mentioned. Everything else was put in as they came to mind. Deciding on the order beyond that is the tough part.

Third, I realize that the Hidamari Sketch X365 Special was only two episode, but that's just a sign I've been seduced by Yuno. Or maybe I wish I could be seduced by her.

Now then to go ahead and post some of my favorite anime females of 2009. Whether or not more will be added depends on how I feel.

Awara Chikako (Ga: Geijutsuka Art Design Class) Noda Mika (GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class) Tainak Ritsu (K-ON! Kyouko (Taishou Yakyuu Musume) Koucho (Taishou Yakyuu Musume) Lisa (Sacred Blacksmith Index (A Certain Magical Index) Kanon (Umi Monogatari) Yuno (Hidamari Sketch X365 Special) Aisaka Taiga (Toradora) Rinko (Jewel Pet)

Airing into 2010 (Assume I'm still watching these, but it's possible they could be dropped before completion)

Animal Detective Kuruminzoo Fresh Precure Hana Sakeru Seishonen Jewel Pet Kiddy Girl -and Shugo Chara! Party! Gokujo!! Mechamote Iincho Kobato Kimi ni Todoke (Well, it better be) Yumeiro Patissiere Inuyasha ~Final Act~ A Certain Scientific Railgun Fairy Tail (Watch as it's still airing in 2015)

Dropped of 2009 (These series failed to motivate me to complete them)
Black Butler Akikan! Kurokami The Animation RIDE BACK Cross Game Natsu no Arashi Basquash Shin Mazinger Shogeki! Z-hen NEEDLESS Shangri-La Tatakau Shisho: The Book of Bantorra Princess Lover! Tegami Bachi

I guess I could work on other lists, but this should give an idea of how things are for me.

Favorites:
Shugo Chara Doki-Since the second season finished airing this season, I don't see why not.
Hayate no Gotoku Second Season-I still haven't finished the first season, but I like this one more (Story feels like it's progressing).
Clannad After Story-This has to be the first anime I watched in R1 that also finished it's airing in Japan.
To Aru Kageku no Railgun
K-ON
Skip Beat
G.A. Geijutsuka Art Design Class

Letdowns:
Valkyria Chronicles-Love the PS3 game. But there was so much wrong with this anime. Still haven't gotten to the last episode, but does it matter? I could go on, but I don't feel like writing a novel.
Shugo Chara Party-Not that I dislike it, but it currently doesn't have anything worthy.
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)-The way Endless Eight was handled. Sighs was alright, but the last arc still left a bad taste in my mouth.

Best 5 Anime 2009
1. Bakemonogatari
2. Eden of the East
3. Trapeze
4. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
5. Kimi ni Todoke

The big winner this year was Noitamina. They contually amazed me season after season. Eden of the East in Spring, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 in the Summer and Trapeze in the Fall. All absolutely amazing series in their own right. Kimi ni Todoke is one of the best romance series in the last year and couple of years too. I actually like Sawako and Kazehaya.

Worst (or Disappointing) 5 Anime 2009
1. K-On!
2. Umineko no Naku Koro ni
3. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2009
4. Seitokai no Ichizon
5. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

When I first heard of K-On, I expected something like Beck. Instead, I got moeblobs going to the beach and doing stupid things. When I first started Umineko, the mystery and horror fan in me awakened, sadly, it turned out crap. Did have cool characters though. Haruhi. Endless Eight. Parody anime haven't worked or been entertaining since the first Hayate no Gotoku and Lucky Star. Seitokai has stale jokes, nothing fresh. FMA Brotherhood. Episode 10 wasn't good enough. Enough said.

Since I've managed to catch up with a few more anime titles from the last months of 2009, I'll do some slight updates to the list:

My Top 10 favorite anime of 2009
