For legit Asian releases...
Mine is the Evangelion 1.11 DVD. (Have the BD also, but its not that format's #1)

My favorite for R2 was also Clannad After Story.

I think it also has to be Clannad for me, for the quality of the release in terms of artwork, materials and extras. Even the card the inlay was printed on was special.

The 30th anniversary Rose of Versailles set. The packaging wasn't deluxe at all, but hey, it's Rose of Versailles.
I only looked at R2s, there's no way I could choose from all the other stuff I picked up in Japan this year ^^;

The Tenchi Muyo! OVA Blu-Ray set.

Tie between Tenchi OVAs and Kanon (both Blu-ray). I think the only R2 DVDs I actually bought (rather than rented) were the Negima OADs.

Heh, the only R2s that I purchased in 2009 were Soul Eater so I guess that series takes the prize.
As far as blu-ray releases are concerned it's a toss up between the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Oh-Ki Blu-ray Box & Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex ones.

"Acquisition" makes me think of companies licensing shows, which wouldn't make sense in R2, so I guess you mean it as in what we got our hands on.
I only started importing with the Summer 2009 season, though I did get K-ON! from Spring. Well, I guess my favorite purchase would simply be my favorite show of the year, Haruhi. Then it'd just follow a list of my favorites for the year that came out in my stated time frame. But I mean, I only have 5 R2 series started and 2 R3, with 2 more R2 preordered tat start in January. And none of those R2 series are quite done yet, though S&W II is really close.
Probably the most impressive release physically is Bakemonogatari, as Haruhi and K-ON!'s releases were kinda sparse for the price. Really love those Haruhi covers though. Bakemono has nice on-disc extras too with the in-character audio commentaries. Too bad nobody is going to sub them. ;_; So they're kinda useless to me even if the idea is absolutely fantastic.
Spice & Wolf II BDs came with a really nice box. Speaking of boxes (and I assume you meant R2/R3 in the title?) I was very happy to grab the R3 Clannad/AS boxes. Have 3 of them, just waiting on the 4th to be released. They really make my R1 copies of Clannad look so very much nicer.

Macross the Movie: Do You Remember Love? R2J DVD. I imported this and watched it for the first time. It certainly leaves an impression.
My new found interest in Macross (how appropriate as 2009 is The Year of Macross), has launched me on a huge 80's anime kick.

what's R2/R2???
anyway, the only R2J I bought in 2009 is automatically my fave for that year:
Ichigo 100% ova-collection.
had to double-dip on it coz of the previously JumpFesta-exclusive first OVA. :bowsmiley:

Easily Kanon on Blu, even though I still haven't finished it yet. ^^;
Glad I skipped the DVD's for this one.

I've edited the thread title to reflect my best guess at Njr's intent; hopefully that will alleviate any confusion.
As to my favorite, probably Kara no Kyokai movies 5-7 ...

For me, it's a hard choice.
Kanon on Blu-Ray is something that I wanted so very badly. And for it to entirely live up to my expectations is quite special.
Alternately, Clannad ~After Story~ DVD 8, specially episode 22, was one of the greatest experiences ever.
But given that After Story got released here (and subtitles really help for someone who doesn't know Japanese -- no kidding!), I'll have to select the former.
Bought these in '09. I have yet to buy any R2J releases. Favorite purchase is Nodame Cantabile S1.
R3 Korea
Nodame Cantabile: S1
R3 Taiwan
Honey & Clover: S1, Mahoraba
Clannad Vol.1 & Vol.5 w/Artboxes, Clannad AS Vol.1 w/Artbox, Kannagi Vol.1 w/Artbox

My favorite R2 this year would be my first Blu-Ray: Macross Frontier 1 (bought whilst in Japan).

And you just know that even if the series by some miracle got licensed, they'd end up dropping the audio commentaries in a split second. Both to save money and figuring it wouldn't be worth the hassle.
Heh, I kind of wish I actually had something to mention. My plans to get started on even a single series were completely destroyed by reality as it were.
About the closest I could possible come would be mentioning a random "If I had the money this would be the series I'd end up prioritizing" comment as it were.
Also, I guess K-ON! does have the distinction of being the first series with a Blu-Ray version that actually makes me desire the Blu-Ray version of it. Even if that Blu-Ray version is too rich for my blood.
Still the fun part with R2 is since they're essentially pricey singles you could have the same series be your favorite for two different years in a row. With some volumes being released in 2009 and the rest in 2010.

My favorite would have to be the R2J DTS edition of Evangelion: Death + EoE.

I really wish Macross: DYRL? was on BD, especially since the last DVD release used a new HD master.
My first viewing of the movie was in 1988, over 20 years ago, and it's still my favorite anime film.

Well, I haven't managed to bring myself to buy any raw Japanese BD releases yet. I was able to patch fan subtitles into the DVD. I wouldn't be able to do same thing with a BD (or at least I couldn't burn it if I did...).
That's gonna be a tough choice for me when the BD version does eventually come out.

I only got Sora Kake 1 Blu-ray and Utakata Summer Memory Box 1 in 2009. And my favorite acquisition is Utakata Summer Memory Box 1 because it included lots of physical extras and the on disc extra with two of the seiyuu visiting the real town the town in the anime was modeled after was also great.
