According to ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-01-22/overall-bd/dvd-sales-anime-sales-rise-in-japan-in-2009), total sales for anime and special effect shows were 77.7 billion yen in 2010. There was a 9% decline in DVD sales, but the increase in BD sales resulted in overall growth of 9%.
I think it's pretty obvious that blu-ray sales growth will have to slow down in 2010. 2009 had some fairly strong, new titles released on BD (Bakemonogatari, Code Geass R2, Evangelion, Gundam 00, K-On!, Macross F, and Ponyo), along with popular back catalog titles. It remains to be seen if any 2010 anime will have the draw--and lopsided sales figures--these titles did. Bandai Visual's Gundam Unicorn worldwide release experiment certainly has a good chance[1]. Apart from the top franchises, DVDs still often outsell BDs by a significant margin. Nevertheless, I hope certain distributors, like Kadokawa, are encouraged by the growth and fully embrace the format in 2010 like others have.
[1] Perhaps not the worldwide part, but if they're going to do it, Gundam is a much better test franchise than True Tears or Black God.
