With people having the R1 release in their hands, I thought it would be a good idea to have a place for people to talk about Strike Witches, either for the first time (like myself), or rewatching the show. So without further ado…

I’m opting to do an episode a day, or every other day. I want to stretch out the experience, but doing an episode a week would be a bit much. Doing it this way will get it done in a relatively quick timeframe.

The opening scene shows all the girls doing their thing. Have to give the scene to Gertrud; holding two guns, blazing a trail by herself and being badass.

Man, I haven’t heard Yoko Ishida in an OP for a while. I’ve forgotten how much I like her voice.

Since witches are prevalent in this show, I have decided that witches struck a deal in the past. In return for not being hunted down and burned/drowned/whatever, they agreed that they and their descendents will never wear pants. Skirts/Long skirts are ok after a certain age though.

Yoshika’s a healer-type, pretty ordinary. It’s cool that their inner animal spirit manifests on their body when using magic.

Obviously the Major’s eye will need explaining; experiment, her own magic, or Neuroi (sp?) induced? And speaking of the Neuroi, for as much destruction they have caused, they’re an awful lousy shot. I mean, the boats can’t be THAT hard to hit, and they seemed to only connect with their first barrage.

The ED was nice too. Overall I’m excited to see where this is going. I like the story setup, loving the art and character design, and the major action sequence of this episode was fluid and excellent to watch.

Rewatching this, I was surprised at how slow a start it was. Pretty much the entire episode is devoted to getting Yoshiko out of Fuso.

I still find it very amusing that the school swimsuit is their "pants" of choice.

I told myself I was going to avoid the discussion, but ah, what the heck .

An episode a day is fine for me personally.

The opening scene shows all the girls doing their thing. Have to give the scene to Gertrud; holding two guns, blazing a trail by herself and being badass.I watched the first episode dubbed back when FUNimation first posted it, and the scene didn't do much for me. My mind was changed this second time through though. It's actually pretty awesome seeing all the girls firing off at the Neuroi.

Man, I haven’t heard Yoko Ishida in an OP for a while. I’ve forgotten how much I like her voice.
I'm not too fond of the OP song personally, but the animation itself is good.

Yoshika’s a healer-type, pretty ordinary. It’s cool that their inner animal spirit manifests on their body when using magic.
I think it's kind of cute how Yoshika's tail and ears pop out.

Mio's eye really reminds me of Geass .

Cute girls with guns flying around the sky, what could be better? :)

I'm rather fond of Yoshika, she's so cute.

It's that pacing that almost caused me to decided to skip the rest of the "preview" episodes that were being shown at Katsucon, since the first episode seems to focus on overdone war/mecha cliches (i.e. a first episode where nothing major happens, the main character not wanting any involvement in the war).

I was going to try to catch up on Ookamikakushi tonight, but what the heck, I'll get an ep of this and Azumanga in. I have a feeling I might bail out of both rewatch threads eventually when time gets too tight but Origination hasn't shipped yet so I have some time...

Episode 1:

- Heh... Fukuen Misato has had some really good roles for me over time (Yami, Elka Frog, Yumina, Natsume, Yin) but Strike Witches was one of the first where I really took note. It's nice going back and hearing her again as Yoshika. I really like that distinctive quality she has to her voice.
- Yay! Down with pants! pants are stupid! Just have to love how school swimsuits are the undergarment of choice in Fusou. No panties, just straight up swimsuit.
- Micchan gets a pretty nasty wound there. She must have hit that tree stump we see. Also, Yoshika rips her shirt off like it's made of wet tissue. That's some strength.
- Magic! Ears! Tail!
- Mio's self-confidence must be infuriating to those around her. :sd: She manages to sound like she's HA-HA-HA-ing even when she's just talking "normally".
- They're sure not long on goodbyes, huh? Yoshika dashes off and BAM, she's gone the next minute, waving goodbye to her family amd Micchan.
- Geh, one thing I didn't want to be reminded of was the bad cg in this show. At least the stuff on the Akagi is the bulk of it and after that it's mostly just shots of the Witches far off in the distance and not to noticeable.
- "I don't approve of war!" Tell that to the Neuroi, Yoshika.
- Charlotte! Francesca! Eila! Sanya! Per-r-r-r-r-r-rine! Sawashirooooooooo~~~
- Damn, Fusou to Britannia is quite the trip. It's been a month... forgot it took them that long (makes sense given they're going by ship but still)
- Dirty Neuroi attack!

I really like the ED sequence, simple as it is. Especially Eila and Sanya doing the little finger motion as they move left to right. And Lucchini burrowing in Charlotte's breasts.

I can certainly understand why it may get on a person's nerves, but I like Mio's self-confidence and HA-HA-HA-ing. It's invigorating to see a character with that kind of confidence.

Right at the beginning of the ED, where she's running, then falls, then pops back up with that face of determination :beatingheart: It's hard not to like her.

For as short as the goodbye scene was, I was actually moved; and it was totally believable.

I'm not sure if I ever did... :sd: Well, it'd be Yoshika, Eila or Sanya most likely. Or Francesca... Hell, most of the girls are best taken in pairs, which makes it harder. Sanya and Eila in particular.

Watching this early today, might be busy later.

Ha! Even the captain of the ship is wondering why they're lousy shots - which leads me to believe that they're not awful, and just toying with them.

I guess if Yoshika trained her magic more, the show might have been about her being a medic. Alas she did not, and must answer her true calling. (as she conveniently falls in front of the Striker Unit)

Did I mention how much I liked the sound effect when Ears and Tail appear? It's the little things that make a show fun.

And Yoshika's in the air! Her flying by and around the Major was funny, then BAM! Super shield stops Neuroi cold. Even though she froze up the first time, Yoshika had a pretty efficient strafing run to expose the core. You really couldn't ask any more of her in this battle.

Can't decide which is cuter, Lucchini's catiness, or Perrine's jealousy outbreak.

No lingering questions about Doctor Miyafuji, they closed up that storyline pretty quick. Still a very good scene and closure for Yoshika.

And when flashing all the girls faces at the end, I yet liked a different girl; the girl who was yawning, like, "Why am I still awake, can I go to sleep now?" :) (Erica?)

Pretty big episode for Yoshika. Self-discovery, first battle, and closure with her dad. (I hope that's the end of it, don't want to make Yoshika's crying pointless)

That's awfully evil of the Neuroi. Imagine if it got serious .

I always seems to be fascinated with scenes where anime characters meet the machine/robot that is their destiny and are getting ready to use it.

And Yoshika's in the air! Her flying by and around the Major was funny, then BAM! Super shield stops Neuroi cold. Even though she froze up the first time, Yoshika had a pretty efficient strafing run to expose the core. You really couldn't ask any more of her in this battle.
Flying around the Major was an amusing moment in an otherwise serious battle. Yoshika definitely did well her first time fighting. I thought Mio putting her face right next to Yoshika's was cute, though I don't know why .

No lingering questions about Doctor Miyafuji, they closed up that storyline pretty quick. Still a very good scene and closure for Yoshika.

Nice to see her want to keep the promise she made for Dad. Her determination to help others in whatever way possible no matter the danger is one of the things I like about Yoshika.

And when flashing all the girls faces at the end, I yet liked a different girl; the girl who was yawning, like, "Why am I still awake, can I go to sleep now?" :) (Erica?)
Sanya and Charlotte caught my eye just on appearance alone. I like Charlotte's bunny ears. Well, that, and she looked pretty good in the swimsuit back in episode 1. Sanya is cute and I like how she uses a rocket launcher.

Pretty much explains my "little fantasy" when it comes to Negima (i.e. cat or bunny ears for most of Negi's Ministra Magi whenever they adeat). :catgirl:

As for the episode itself, when watching this episode at Katsucon, I said out loud, "Thank you!!!" after Yoshika decides to join the troop, given how she's finally trying to get past the "I don't want to get involved in war" crap that almost made me want to pass on this show.

Episode 2:

- Oh CG, you're so bad. Can't wait until we get away from the ship.
- Go Go Mio! Even though Yoshika is naive, you have to give her credit for wanting to help regardless of the danger. But there's something else you should be doing, Miyafuji Yoshika!
- I rather like the shot of all the bandages rolled out down the hallway. It just makes the total uselessness Yoshika is feeling so clear.
- <3 Yoshika can flyyyyyyy! Wow, I'm absolutely loving this, way more than I thought I would on a rewatch. I loooove Yoshika. And I love that when Mio tells her to use the gun, and that it's the way to protect everyone... Yoshika accepts it! Good girl.
- And a shot from elsewhere finishes it off. Nice shot, Zucchini!
- Perrine's beloved Major is holding another woman...!
- Whelp, Yoshika saw what she came to see, more or less. Back to Fusou with her. Show over!
- Or, she could become a Strike Witch!

This show really does have some of the most fantastic character designs in recent years. God they're just fantastic.

Next time, Lynette shows us how cute she is!

I seem to remember Luccini being my general favorite of them, since she was generally the most amusing and got into the most trouble. Plus, cat-like and wears shimapan, also two big plusses.

Erica though was always a lot of fun too- especially in the 'missing pants' episode. :catgirl:

But, let's face it- there really wasn't a bad character in the lot. They were all a whole lot of fun and got their chance to shine.

Unfortunately, from some of what I've heard about the R1 DVDs, it looks like I'm no longer on the fence about picking them up and will just be sticking with my CR DTO files for the time being. I'm all for supporting a show- but I'm NOT for supporting and spending money on shitty production/encoding practices.

Looks like were treated to a debriefing before the episode's OP. Is it just me, or did ALL of the seriousness of the scene go out the window when we got a nice look a Minna's derriere?

It looks like I have underestimated Perrine's passion for Mio. The occasional outburst is cute, but now I'm wondering if she's going to sabotage Yoshika somehow.

Character intros are nic... YES! I knew it! The girls have priorities, and Francesca is only too happy to "measure up" their new squadmate. ^_^ Francesca is easily becoming one of my favorites.

But there's a new challenger, Lynette! Stockings, pretty, and even a bit spacey to top it off! There's some self-esteem issues, but I actually like that quality. (and seeing the character overcome that is even better, which she does by the end) Plus she's the Awesome eye-catch this episode, my personal favorite so far.

Apparently, Yoshika thinks Lynette is a mousepad, as TWICE she has used her breasts to rest her hand/wrist/arm after training. Not that I'm complaining. :P

And battle begins; although the battle played out conveniently for the episodes storyline, it didn't detracted from how good the scene was. It was quick thinking on Yoshika's part to help out, but I was more impressed with Lynette. Instead of just calming down and taking the kill shot, she forced the Neuroi into a position for an easy kill. Her excited celebration was also a plus with me, she just has to remember that she can suffocate somebody with those... I wonder if the striker units can be submerged

Another fun episode. I wonder if every girl will get her own episode, they'd run out of time for a plot. Doing pairs of girls is probably the better route.

So after 3 episodes I'm already in a dilemma: Breast-grabbin', katty, sleeping, short twintails shimapan vs. Nice, classic, busty, and reserved Zettai Ryouiki... why does Gonzo torture me so!?

Mayhaps we should have another "Favorite character poll" later on, if more people have watched it now then after broadcast? That'd be fun. Though of course, it's hard to not vote for like, seven characters as my "Favorite."

I've heard so many people cynically complain about Yoshika's naivety, but if a 14-year old girl were forced into war, they'd probably react as she does. In the early episodes of SW, Yoshika really is a child. That's one of the key dynamics in SW: those forced to save the Earth are children who basically lack military discipline.

I'm rather fond of Yoshika, she's so cute.
It's half the voice (Fukuen Misato!), half the hair. I love the hair.

I'm all about hair that naturally forms itself into kemonomimi-like extrusions. That is a very strong and underused moe point. Off the top of my head, I can only think of one or two other characters like that (Serizawa from Pani Poni Dash, ummm...)

- So did Sakamoto know that Yoshika's father was dead the whole time, and was merely leading her on in order to get her to Britannia? Why did her father's letter suddenly get delivered ten years later? There are so many unanalyzed things beneath the "moe girls ganbaremasu'ing" veneer of the show.

I always seems to be fascinated with scenes where anime characters meet the machine/robot that is their destiny and are getting ready to use it.

I will automatically love any anime that has this scene:

(Bridge of a military ship, in midst of crisis)
Orderly: Captain, Elevator shaft #7 is in operation!
Captain: What...?!??
*dramatic music starts playing*

It was probably this scene in episode 2 that made me realize how much Strike Witches owes to Gunbuster. It even has a lot of the same characters...spunky rookie who's father died in the war, one-eyed and thoroughly Japanese "hard work and guts" coach, arrogant foreign rival who challenges main character to a duel. Someday, there needs to be a crossover doujinshi.

Yeah, the anti-war stuff here was pretty dumb, they're freaking alien plane...THINGS

The anti-war stuff is dumb because Yoshika is dumb. Though I suppose that's part of her cuteness. She did drop it pretty quickly, though.

It would be a requirement for it to allow more than one vote. Also, because there's like a dozen characters and it'll only get like 20-30 votes tops and so one vote per makes for very boring results.

I've heard so many people cynically complain about Yoshika's naivety, but if a 14-year old girl were forced into war, they'd probably react as she does.
It's almost always "understandable" to some degree in an objective sense. But it never stops being annoying. But yes, Yoshika gets over it very quickly, far faster than most characters.

I can understand the love for Lynette, as she quickly became one of my favorites in the Strike Witches cast after viewing this at Katsucon. Not sure if it's due to her personality, her fashion sense, or whatever. Admittedly I've never seen Strike Witches before, and my knowledge boils down to "WW2" "cute girls" and "panties." But still... even supposing they have to have direct skin contact with the "brooms" and even supposing they have to be prepared to scramble at any moment... you'd think they could at least wear shorts, right?

Wait, I'm applying logic where logic is not actually called for, aren't I. My bad. Carry on. It's not like I disapprove of their fashion statement, I just find it utterly bizarre. ^^

Stop being so discriminatory against the fashion of other cultures! You pants elitist!!

You have to consider: they're not panties, so it's not embarrassing.

I personally like the theory put forth in the original thread: the first thing the Neuroi did when they attacked was destroy all the factories that made pants and skirts, leaving only enough for the old women nobody wanted to see running around in panties...

I'm all about hair that naturally forms itself into kemonomimi-like extrusions. That is a very strong and underused moe point. Off the top of my head, I can only think of one or two other characters like that (Serizawa from Pani Poni Dash, ummm...)

Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou's Koyomi would qualify too I believe though hers is a bit longer and curls.

Was there a "no pants" thing with the Light Novel or Manga, or is it original to the anime?

The funny thing is that Gonzo did a short ONA about a year before the TV series and in it some of the characters wore skirts and pants, even when in their Striker units. Lynette had a very short skirt but it was still a skirt, and both Erica and Gertrude wore shorts. There were also scenes of them flying over a Britannia town and the women and girls were all wearing long skirts.

I'll do some screen captures and post them later

I knew there was a reason I never watched that. It's clearly an abomination!

Anyway, for those wondering, a shimada_fumikane strike_witches (http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/index?page=2&tags=shimada_fumikane%20strike_witches) search over at danbooru (nsfw site etc etc) will show lots of the original artist's stuff and a distinct lack of what we in our unenlightened culture would call "pants".

An exception of sorts would be Anabuki Tomoko (http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/index?tags=anabuki_tomoko) in hakama skirt mode, but she kinda has to have some sort of skirt there or the whole visual effect would be ruined.

Not to mention the girls in GunBuster don't wear pants either. At least not in combat, anyway. :)

Well, that puts an end to my idea that pants, skirts, shorts, or dresses might interfere with the Striker units' workings in some way - I don't know how exactly - but that only applies to the witches, not every other female in the show.

Good grief, I've given this more thought than is actually neccessary...

You know, I've never really thought about that connection, but it does work very well. I guess I may have subconsciously noticed it though since Gunbuster is easily one of my favorite shows of all time. Hopefully Strike Witches 2 won't make the same mistake Gunbuster 2 did and have the characters wearing pants in combat (well... OK, don't feel like going into spoiler territory... :P).

Well, the ONA also had animal familiars for all of the girls that they combined with that gave them their komimi appearance, so there were a number of tweaks to the concept along the way given that they started off with nothing but the mecha-musume artwork and had to flesh out everything else from there...

And next we look at - Gertrud!

Ah, she's the "haunted by her past" character. Not usually my favorite, but I root for these types of characters all the same. Also agree with her sleeping preference. ;)

For as lovable as Perrine could/can be, she's starting to go thru my straws. She's not at my last one yet, but it's starting to whittle down. And poor Francesca just wants seconds! (although I would hold out too till she gave me that face she made the third time )

Side note: FUNi's subtitles said "Seconds!" for Francesca the first two times she asked for it, but it said "Thirds" the third time. It didn't look like Yoshika gave her food at any time before the scene ended, so this stood out to me and don't know if it's wrong or right.

Ah, so it is Gertrude's sister. You know, I've never understood the whole "you look like something from my past, so I must hate you" sentiment. Poor Yoshika just can't get a break :(

Bath Time! Unless the animators forgot who was who, Mio totally tapes down her chest. They look to even challenge Lynette! Basically the entire scene was :nosebleed:

Finally, Yoshika is starting to not take shit anymore. That's right girl, drink your milk in your towel! And use '-san' whenever you damn well please.

And Gertrude being reckless in battle. I empathize with her, but throwing your life away is never a good idea. I mean, your sister IS still alive thanks to you, and you've shot down a crazy amount of Neuroi; it's time to let go of the self-hate. Which she does, thanks to our cute heroine, Yoshika. Who is so NOT a raccoon dog! (but I still loled at the comment)

Whoa! Yet another side of Minna, one that completely caught me off guard. I'm starting to consider her as my favorite, as she's just the perfect package.

That's better Perrine, saying 'Thank you' isn't that hard; now you can be awesome. And with Gertrude being nice now, Yoshika doesn't have to spend time worrying about someone being mean to her.

- Oooh! Perrine without her stockings. That's rare. And hot. She's really a bitch at this point though...
- Oh right, Yoshika still has some really ridiculous lingering hang-ups. Oh no no, I cannot have a handgun! But sueprsonic propeller legs and giant fucking machine gun, she can handle that. .. ... ....wut?
- Zucchini-chan don't give a shit! She just wants a way to sprawl herself out at every opportunity.
- Hah, introductions are awesome. If Francesca will get up for anything, it's groping. She's left disappointed thuogh. Well jeeze that's inevitable, she's married to the Twin Peaks of Liberion! The mountains that top even Lynette! Yoshika is... intrigued.
- And ohhhh Lynne, I love love love your gaudy thighhighs. They're fantastic.
- Charlotte introduces Yoshika more and more into the wonderful world of breasts!
- The Karlsland trio are pretty damn dominant. 610 neuroi shot down among them.
- Ahaha, Yoshika is quite impressed with Lynne's boobs too. Yoshika, your boob fetish is the. best. thing.
- And there's Francesca sleeping again.
- Lynette the lovely sniper~
- Haha, Yoshika's arm is like magnetically attracted to Lynne's breasts.
- ...She's not moving that hand at all. Hah.
- And there we go again! =D
- Sorry Yoshika, the message right now is clearly that you suck.
- Aww, Lynette. ;_; Don't be so hard on yourself. Look how nice your breasts are! 'Trude was incorrect. It's not only combat power that matters. It's combat power and/or how well your satisfy Yoshika's breast obsession.
- Looks like you're not avoiding combat this time after all.
- "Muri da na." ::finger x:: EILA I LOOOVE YOU.
- Multi-stage rocket neuroi! It's all up to Lynne and Yoshika. Lynne can't stabilize her shots. Yoshika knows the answer... GATTAI!
- I like Lynette's strategy. Fire a vertical wall of shots and catch it on the way up! Guess it's a good thing it didn't veer to either side.
- Hah, Lynne-chan, you gave Yoshika all the thanks she needed when you shoved your breasts in her face.

Great episode. Breasts for Yoshika, everywhere she looks!

Looks like were treated to a debriefing before the episode's OP. Is it just me, or did ALL of the seriousness of the scene go out the window when we got a nice look a Minna's derriere?
That's what made it awesome. Serious scenes like that usually suck anyway so Minna's panties improved it dramatically. It's not that Strike Witches can't do serious scenes unexpectedly well. It can, but more in the character drama sense. The military/political/plot stuff I never cared about.

Oh yes, that moment. If there's one thing that stuck out at the dub premiere of Strike Witches at Katsucon, it was the scenes set when the girls were taking baths. Given how the girls' nipples are visible during these scenes, I'm surprised that Funi was able to air the premiere on Saturday afternoon without having to "card" people before they can enter the video room. The only question I'm still wondering: were the nipples visible in the original TV version, or were they added for the DVD?

I watched the first half of the series with my brother's MS3K-like commentary. And he asked here, "If they're only fighting against the Neuroi and not humans, what does she need the handgun for? It's not like it would event dent them if she's downed behind enemy lines." Which I had no answer for ^_^"

- The Karlsland trio are pretty damn dominant. 610 neuroi shot down among them.

German aces kind of got to cheat on shoot-down counts because they were forced to fly far more than pilots from other nations, which had more manpower and rotated pilots. Because of this, the scoreboards of ace shoot-downs from WWII is totally dominated by German pilots:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_air_aces

Strike Witches and WWII Wikipedia articles go together like peanut butter and jelly. Technically Chuck Yeager (Charlotte Yeager's namesake) only has 11.5 kills...but he shot down five of those enemy fighters in a single day.

Bath Time! Unless the animators forgot who was who, Mio totally tapes down her chest. They look to even challenge Lynette! Basically the entire scene was :nosebleed:

I don't know if we ever see Mio wearing a sarashi (http://danbooru.donmai.us/wiki/show?title=sarashi), but I could see her doing that. I believe some Fuso characters from the novel/manga versions did (Tomobuki and Hayate Nakajima).

As for the "no pants" thing, I wonder if the lack of pants or skirts (although pantyhose seems to be alright) has something to do with these clothes possibly have something to do with the concern that lose pieces of clothing could end up getting caught in the Striker unit, hence damaging both the unit and the girl.

After all, if you've seen the Incredibles, you are probably aware of the amount of superhero deaths that happened as a result of "cape-related accidents". :)

The true strength of any otaku fandom can be measured in how many minutes it takes a $320 licensed good to sell out.

The jacket is pretty awesome, though. I already have the Cospa-produced T-shirt and windbreaker, and I like to wear them when watching the show. Moe clothing does have a certain incredible psychological effect. In terms of bathing suits, I'm actually giving the nod to Perrine. The blue just matched her so well. Followed by Sanya with her lovely black suit, and then Lynette with her cute pink with white frill one piece.

Dammit Neuroi, you just HAD to attack today of all days  Watching Shirley jump into her unit up-close, it made me think of the "skin-must-touch-unit" theory. The Unit goes really far up their legs, even to a point were shorts would be a problem for the witch. You could say, "it would just go underneath the shorts", but there's no guarantee of that. So... don't know where I was going with that, anyway...
Edit: I just realized Lynette wears 'clothing', her stockings go INTO the striker unit every time. I'm sure they're some specially made magical stockings that don't interfere with the instruments. Don't know why I'm defending a theory I don't subscribe to

Even Mina has wrath that the girls are afraid of! Well, at least Fran, who gets a nice bump on the head. Put another check in "Mina is the perfect Women" column.

But it looks like Fran didn't deserve it, as Shirley broke Mach 1! And talk about a good strategy for killing Neuroi, ram straight thru the bastard! Drill through the Heavens Shirley!

There is a cost though, your clothes get obliterated. Not to mention she was completely exhausted and done, good thing Yoshika and Lynette chased after her.

And Yoshika has fully awakened! There's no going back, or getting through to her when breasts are in her face to hold, to feel, to squeeze, to touch greatness that is breasts!

Even though the episode was about Shirley's speed needs, it was really the coming out party of Yoshika's Breast infatuation!

I'm actually really anticipating the next episode, as the show really hasn't showed Sanya in any significant sort of way.

Yoshika, what ARE you dreaming about? She must have never known anybody with sizable breasts her entire life. It's very adorable the way she stares
It was hilarious yet cute at the same time. It's too bad we didn't get to see the dream.

Yep, speed demon; trying to break the sound barrier. I like how she shuts off her engines right above the girls to cushion her fall. And don't think I didn't notice your hands Yoshika! Any opportunity will suffice.
We need a "Yoshika's hands on breasts" counter. :catgirl:

Heh, it's funny how Francesca's screw up wound up helping. Shirley is FAST, and it was just cool how she obliterated the Neuroi.

There is a cost though, your clothes get obliterated. Not to mention she was completely exhausted and done, good thing Yoshika and Lynette chased after her.
I wonder how it is that the Witches don't have a lot more "wardrobe malfunctions" at the speeds they're flying at.

I imagine it's something along the lines of a Structural Integrity Field generated by the Striker Units when they're in use that protects both the Witches themselves and their clothes, kind of like the nanogel from Sky Girls only it doesn't have a time limit. Shirley's overloaded units (the Striker Units, get your mind out of the gutter Yoshika...) weren't able to maintain it after what happened and she was lucky to just get off with losing her clothes.

Or, they just wanted an excuse to end up with her naked breasts in Yoshika's hands... either way works. :catgirl:

Given the recent debacle surrounding a certain newly-licensed title, I find this quite the surprise. FUNimation appears to be teaming up with Sankaku Complex to conduct market research, with the whole thing cleverly disguised as a promotional giveaway (http://www.sankakucomplex.com/competitions/winning-the-war-on-pants-giveaway/) (site is NSFW).

I'd seen the Strike Witches banners plastered all over Sankaku these past few days, but this is something I never expected. Perhaps they really do care about our little segment of the anime market, after all.

Episode 5:

- HELL YES! Is there a better way to start an episode than Yoshika having a sex dream about Lynette? Besides starting the episode with Yoshika actually having sex with Lynette, I mean.
- Oh god Yoshika you are soooooo gaaaaaay. <3 Blushing like mad at the sight of Lynne-chan's cleavage!
- Yes Lynne. She dreamed of "training". Right. No euphemisms at alllll.
- Oh holy shit I love this show. And yay off to the beach!
- But first time for Shirley and her lovely, lovely usamimi. She has such a great design and Koshimizu Ami is just perfect. Of course being paired with Zucchini-chan just makes it all the better.
- Over 800km/h! Still not her goal, though. She's got to get quite a bit higher. Depending on altiude and such, around 1225km/h. And of course when she lands, Yoshika is there to cushion her breasts. As if they needed more.
- Hahaha, oh Shirley you're lookin' so American. Or, Liberionian, rather. Big boobs, bigger personality, history as a biker, workin on your (aerial) hot rod, and eating a hambuger! The only thing you're missing is blond hair but I rather like the orange so that's fine.
- On Francesca, always meddling. I'm suuuure you put her striker unit back together correctly. :sd:
- SWIMSUITS!! Everyone is just insanely sexy. Every single one. And I hope Eila and Sanya brought sunblock. And dogpaddling Erica!
- Also, really fucking good animation in this whole segment.
- Lying on the beach with Shirley and Lynette. How much do you think Yoshika would give to be inbetween them, breasts smushed up against either side of her face? I'm thinking at least 16,000 bowls of rice.
- Neuroi! Interrupts Yoshika's boob time, it must pay.
- Haha I love the phone hanging on the side of a rock.
- Off Shirley goes! But, like, what did Lynne and Yoshika plan to do without weapons? :sd:
- Hahahah, Francesca is in trouble. Saitou Chiwa does "oh shit I'm scared" so well.
- Shirley's breasts are absolutely glorious.
- But hey, who needs weapons? Shirley herself becomes a rocket!
- And her clothes disintegrate, like good clothes should! NAKED SHIRLEY FALLING FROM THE SKY!
- Breasts! Yoshika paradise! Ahahaha, she totally goes into a Fuuko starfish trance.

I looooooooooooove this show.

And the next episode is even better! "Sanya Sanya Sanya Sanya Sanya!" Eila loves Sanya as much as Yoshika loves boobs!

Perrine wears pantyhose (you can see her pantsu through them), Eila and Sanya wear some form of tights or Leggings. Presumably because of the climate where they are from.

Also, Sanya has an actual, honest to god, skirt.

The opening treats us to Sanya's humming, which is very pretty.

*Blushing Sanya*, oh man, I'm starting to fall for her :beatingheart:

And of course, Neuroi approaches. I liked the little detail of showing Sanya click the safety off. Not much of a battle though.

Boo! No second guessing Sanya! Sticking your tongue out Eila, while cute, doesn't make them stop second guessing.

Oh Lynette, a shy Neuroi? I sometimes worry about what jumps to your mind first :)

And the graveyard shift is formed; there's no possibly way that Eila could have volunteered faster though. I liked the little detail in this part too, where Eila's fingers were separated enough to see the other girls.

I didn't know that blueberries were part of the "good for your eyes" group of food. That doesn't matter to Fran though, she just wants to see blue tongues! Poor Perrine, getting embarrassed in front of Mio, that's a bad Eila :P

I guess the night shift group all have to sleep in the same room? Works for me. Sanya's comment about being a 'ghost' makes me love her even more. She's filling my moe meter to maximum very quickly.

Perrine's turn to improve eyesight, and it doesn't seem to go over well. Francesca is not amused, she must have different colored tongues! But at least it's not as horrid as Mio's liver oil. My favorite reaction was Gertrud, it looked like she died a little.

Sauna time! Just as good as beach or bath time if you ask me. There is just no way Yoshika is getting close to Sanya (or rather, Sanya's breasts), Eila won't even let her stare at Sanya for more then 3 seconds! Sanya's skin is amazing though. Ah, but outside Eila gets caught up in staring herself. "Get your heart racing" indeed; I know what Yoshika is thinking about, but I can only guess at the magnitude of Eila's thoughts. Her face looked to give an expression of longing, pained longing even. It was very interesting to watch.

Chibi Sanya! So cute! I'm sure all the girls would be just adorable as little kids though.

An interesting battle this episode. It seems the Neuroi was actually watching Sanya to figure her out, then mimicked her song to act as a jamming signal. They are definitely fine tuning their assaults on the witches.

Crap, half of Sanya's unit was blown away! Way to close for comfort.

I see the trio is going with a COM/SEN/COM formation this battle. Makes sense I guess; a speedy, stealthy Neuroi is bound to not have that much HP. Yoshika absorbs the damage, while Eila and Sanya fire away, good kill girls!

(Actually, how would that kill be recorded? As '1' for each of the girls, or .3 to each?)

And we're treated to Sanya flying with the moon... just so perfect!

For not knowing anything about Sanya before this episode, she completely took me by surprise. She's sweet, thoughtful, and cool under pressure. Couple that with her singing voice and her shyness factor, and it all adds up to pure love :beatingheart: Easily one of my Top 3 girls.

I honestly have no idea what's going to happen time. But if Fran's song is any indication, then Yoshika is going to have another Breast-filled day.

Sanya's the perfect package in my opinion. I really like her a lot, and it was great being able to get to know her better in this episode.

It was also nice to see Yoshika finally be able to enjoy her birthday, and she made some new friends. It's sad that she wasn't able enjoy it until now because of the looming shadow her father's death cast on it. The birthday photo was a nice touch.

She's definitely the 'mother' of the group- though she's a bit better at internal discipline than her counterpart in the 1121st (though in neither case to you want to be threatening their children...). Filicia is essentially a cross between Mina and Aria's Alicia...

- "If the Neuroi would never have shown up, they'd probably be fighting amongst themselves." Hahah, yeah, uh, you can say that again.
- Awww, Sanya's singing is so cute. And she's so shy! But also so skilled. Sanya, you adorable little armed AWACS you. She's got some impressive missiles.
- Oooh, there's too much loveliness going on in the after-mission chatter to cover. Sanya in her sexy arm cloves, Eila sticking her tongue out at Perrrrrrrine, Erica in her bra (she's got pretty respectable boobs...), Francesca curled up on the chair, <3 <3
- Yes, a night patrol team! Sanya and Yoshika and... Eila, of course! I like both of their voices. Nakai Erika (aka Oohashi Ayuru) for Eila and Kadowaki Mai as Sanya. Oohashi has never really done anything else which is a bit of a shame... I mean she's not necessarily the best actress - Eila doesn't always have a lot of emotion behind her dialogue, and delivery is off sometimes. But she's got a definite "deadpan cute" quality to her voice and it works out well for a character like Eila, even if it's akward at times. It could work better if she had more experience.
- Now you will all sleep together! Muahah!
- THERE IT IS! THE PERRINE GRRRRRRROWL! Sawashiro gets better at it later. I loooove it.
- Hahha, all Francesca cares about is colored tongues.
- Awwwww. Yoshika wants to hold hands. Eila won't let her hold hands with just Sanya!
- Such a sweet moment in the Sanya cave with Yoshika talking about meeting back up with the people you love. She's definitely winning Sanya over.
- Sauna! Don't you look at Eila's wife with lecherous eyes!
- Yay more naked. And staring at naked Sanya!
- Ahh I love this part! It's Yoshika's birthday! Sanya really opens up (and Eila grudgingly tolerates it all) and it's so sweet. Then they all team up on the neuroi and kick some ass. Yoshika turns 15, Sanya 14.

Cool to see the girls sleeping habits. I see Mina shares Gertrud's sleeping preference, which is four-thumbs up! Erica is just all over the place, and Mio is already up training.

Perrine was adorable this episode, from forgetting her glasses, to the different fantasies she had, to being held by Mio. It was a net gain day for her. Loved the eye-catch too!

Erica can't find her pantsu, so she leaves! Ah, it's a pantsu episode I see.

And now there's Erica butt all along the handrail now. She just picks up the first pair she sees and goes on her way, which leads to the second highlight of the episode.

Francesca, totally being sneaky, but ultimately misunderstood and chased the whole episode. All the little noises she makes trying to play it cool, and then being chased were just hilarious.

Sanya sleeping! :catgirl: Sanya trying to get her pantsu back :sdsmiley:

- Sanya ends up in Eila's room, and Eila agrees to put up with it, "just for today". Catchphrase start!
- Hahah, I love Erica. Trude tells her that the 1st, 2nd ... 8th, 9th most important things for a Karlsland soldier are discipline! Erica asks what the 10th is. XD And she takes "five more minutes" to an all new level. 70 more minutes! AT least she's honest, that's what we all mean when we say 5..
- Also, NO PANTS. Trude, you're so adorable when you're flustered.
- Heh, now that Perrine is over the worst of her bitchiness, she just turns to being incredibly cute as she pines for Mio.
- That's a large plate of potatos.
- Erica can't find her pants! But whatever, she doesn't need them. And yes, note that she actually says pants, zubon. They're not panties, they're pants! Don't forget it!
- More bathing! More Perrine fantasizing about Mio. ::sparkle:: Perrine looks so cute with her hair back.
- Perrrrrrrrrrrrine growls! Oh man, this growl is totally on the money. Sawashiro has henceforth perfected it. I bet anything that originated as an adlib.

- Haha oh right. That's this episode...anyway, Erica steals Lucchini's shimapan!!
- So Lucchini steals Perrine's! Perrine makes up for it with creative use of magical tail.
- And she almost inadvertantly nabs Yoshika's pants...
- And even Yoshika has to go pantsless because her pants are now evidence. =D
- Then Trude almost gives her pants to Yoshika >_>
- ...Meanwhile Lucchini realizes she's in deep shit. As the real criminal eats happily. Haha.
- Awesome, the great chase begins. Erica has no remorse whatsoever.
- Bwhaha, Perrine can't run because of the rubbing sensation...
- Sanya has such amazing lingerie. By which I mean pants. Side-tie ftw.
- Eila must have some strong tights if Lucchini can use them to rappel down a wall.
- And before she leaves, Eila borrows Sanya's...!! You finally got in Sanya's pants!
- Lucchini is becoming the master pants thief. Oh god Saitou Chiwa makes the most ridiculous sounds as nervous Lucchini. XD
- Oh god yes, the alarm goes off. Eila sorties in Sanya's pants! Mio in pants only! Yoshika with no pants! Perrine see-through! Sanya with bare legs!

The "love" letter scene was cute. Lynette was more excited about it then Yoshika though. I'm sure if somebody gave Lynette one, she would just pass out on the spot. :)

*Gasp* Their hands touched, so they must stop whatever they are doing and be embarrassed for 5 seconds! And the letter gets away again, but Mina is not pleased. She's a real hardass on this rule, now I'm certain there's more to this.

Talk about a battle that pads the stats. I'm sure Gertrud and Erica got +50 more kills each. Mina and Perrine finally used their magic in battle. So, Mina seems to use hers to make quick battle assessments; and Perrine is just a good ol' area lightning attack. And did the Neuroi just test a final attack? It seemed that the fragments from the destroyed core shot out and went through Mio's barrier like it was nothing.

Yep, I knew it. Poor Mina :( I guess she wanted to spare the witches that type of loss. But it was nice of her to let Yoshika see the Akagi off.

..!! Her singing! :beatingheart: Her dress! :nosebleed: MINA!! :bowsmiley:

Ha ha! "You must praise Sanya more!" Oh Eila, the type of love you have for Sanya is one of a kind

Apparently, were ending on a 'WTF' moment.

Another good episode. The highlight for me, obviously, was Mina in her dress. She was just drop dead gorgeous.

And Erica is just utterly shameless. Absolutely no remorse whatsoever.

I couldn't decide if it was that, or if she was just completely oblivious to the situation playing out around her, in spite of being the one responsible for it.

And by the time Luccini is stealing Eila's tights, she must be in full flight mode, because she's only making things worse for herself.

Episode 8:

- Don't worry Yoshika, you don't need to talk to men anyway. They're good for nothin'! They don't even have big breasts!
- Yoshika is surrounded by men. You're all after the wrong woman! Fools!
- Hah, the captain of the Akagi gave Yoshika a Tomoko doll.
- Okay enough stuff about dudes, it's time to sortie. It's a cube shaped neuroi and it divides into over 200 little cubes!
- We get a taste of some of the other witches' powers. So far, we've known the following powers/skills:
Yoshika: healing power; Mio: eye locates neuroi cores; Lynette: sniper; Charlotte: speed, breasts; Sanya: radar/sensors; Eila: sees the near future.
- This episode adds a few. Minna: enhanced situational awareness? She was able to count the cubes just by concentrating. Perrine: controls electricity, sexy growl.
- I still don't think we've gotten specific powers for Trude, Erica, or Francesca. In fact I can only remember what Trude's is out of those three. :sd: But I like how Erica doesn't actually grow animal ears, rather the tips of her hair are blackened as if ears were hanging down.
- Ooh, what's wrong Mio? Your shield let a fragment through.
- "They say that beautiful flowers have thorns." "Talking about yourself?" HAH! Perfect.
- Now a flashback to when Minna was young and foolish, before she discovered her true love, Mio.
- Back to base they go and Minna puts on a concert for everyone, singing Lili Marleen. Nice cleavage, Minna. And don't forget to praise Sanya's piano! Eila will not let you forget!

Minna's idea of not losing more people involves pulling a gun on them! OH NO SHE'S A NEUROI SPY! ...no, wait.

Anyway, yeah, cliffhanger and stuff.

It was really cool seeing the Witches in action again, and the battle against the neuroi was pretty interesting. ZOMG! Mina is yandere or something, and evil cliffhangers are evil. I really enjoyed seeing Mina's past, but I feel sorry for her loss. I can understand why she had the rules in place for the Witches.

I just love how the episode ended with the girls' realization that Erica was the one who stole Lucchini's panties. It was a nice way to top the craziness off. The underwear troubles of the girls were amusing too. But what did happen to Erica's panties?

At the end of the day, it seems Erica is the trickster of the group. Or maybe it's more of an ambivalence, can't really tell. But she did have the funniest line of the episode, "What about 10th?" I laughed so hard.

That whole scene with Barkhorn giving Erica a hard time was amusing. Erica was just like "whatever, let me sleep."

Man, thats really weird. Minna isn't singing Lili Marleen on Funi's DVD, in either track.

In Japanese she's singing a song named "Negai no Tomoshibi", which is indeed done by Tanaka Rie as Minna (character song, perhaps?), however on the Japanese DVDs it is indeed Lili Marleen.

Thats just so weird, why would there be rights issues involving Lili Marleen of all things?

I was wondering if it was the same way on the Japanese DVDs. Do you have actual copies on hand to compare?

It seems Lili Marleen was originally recorded in 1939. I don't know how the actual copyrights fall, but under the Sonny Bonno Act or Berne Convention, it is possible that there's actually an issue. 1939 + 75 years, for example, would give a Public Domaining date of 2014. Or maybe it was done for reasons other than copyright.

EDIT: I'm usually on the fence when it comes to song changes, but this change is pretty bad. Negai no Tomoshibi sounds fine, and Mina sounds good singing it. It's not about the song, it's about the time period. Mina singing Lili Marleen gives the show that extra bit of believability with the timeframe the show is working with. I wonder if FUNi has an answer for this.

Oh Eila, don't kid yourself. It's always going to be "Only for today" :)

Yay, sisterly reunion! Very cute scene with the Barkhorns.

More Perrine growling this episode, so very awesome! Loved the eye-catch again. You're the only one who can save Mio!

Oh, it makes sense now. An age cap huh? That's why the fragments went right through her barrier. And why Minna has been freaking out ever since then. It wasn't the Neuroi, it was Mio's aging. Mio must be way past her prime then, as Sanya can subconsciously detect Neuroi with her magic.

And the Neuroi are even more devious, playing on Yoshika's pacifistic tendencies. I don't want to know what would happen if Yoshika touched the core, good thing Mio showed up first... or maybe not.

Looks like we're going with cliffhanger endings all the way to the end it seems. Seeing Minna cry so fiercely and passionately made me feel her pain; I hope Mio's ok.

Mina was totally failing at her empty threats but I love how she was trying to protect Mio. I'm really depressed at the fact that Mio is only 20 and she's already "going downhill." =(

It was great seeing Gertrude finally be able to see her sister again. She's really caring deep down inside.

It was moving seeing Yoshika show her gratitude about Mio being a great teacher to her, but it sucks that Yoshika wound up with triple the training. :sd: Yoshika has really gotten better at combat, and the training shows.

It was fascinating seeing Yoshika interact with the Neuroi. I really want to know more about what they are. It's really interesting how they've been trying to imitate people.

It was devastating seeing Mio get shot down. ;_; I hope she's okay, and holy cow, Mina's totally ticked! I love that vengeful desire she displayed. Though I feel bad for the Neuroi. It was so misunderstood. Maybe.

I love this show.

Minna totally should have slipped the dress off when Mio told her she couldn't take her seriously wearing it.

Perinne really should be annoying and not very likable, but something about her just makes it impossible to hate her.

I hadn't remembered we got to Neuroi-tan already, but I guess the series is almost over.

Minna's absolute desperation over Mio is something to behold, she really does love her a lot, though its hard to say if its truly mutual.

Episode 9:

- Ha. Ha. Ha. Mio just completely blows Minna off. The only thing missing was her laugh. Oh Minna, you didn't convince her for a second. XD
- Yes Eila. Just for today. Just like yesterday. And just like tomorrow. And the day after. And the day after that. You're even less convincing than Minna!
- Chris woke up! Trude is a mess. Thankfully Erica is there to tease her about it. =D I love you, Erica. And I love Chris! And I'm glad that the nurse was wearing her pants properly!
- Hahah, Perrine. She can't get close to her beloved anymore. And her beloved is in Yoshika's room... the horror!
- Grrrrrrowling again!!
- Oh Yoshika, you might shoot Charlotte down in a mock battle, but there are some areas you'll never beat her in. Lucchini makes sure to remind you of that. And I love Yoshika telling Perrine they make a good team. Yoshika doesn't seem to be oblivious about Perrine's attitude toward her, but she seems too sincere to simply be trolling her. I guess she's just hoping that being relentlessly nice will eventually break down Perrine's defenses. :sd:
- Hahahahah, absolutely love this part. Every single time we've had a bathing scene in this series I've been waiting for this. Yes Yoshika, please tell us just in what ways Lynne is amazing. We would love to hear. =D Oh man, her eyes never leave Lynne's breasts.
- Oh Perrine, getting a bit too serious there. She totally recommended real guns to throw Yoshika off.
- Though it sort of ends up helping when a Neuroi shows up. Yoshika is getting her hubris on with her recent successes though.
- Also, plot stuff with the military and neuroi.
- Mio is an old maid! 20 is totally over the hill!
- And Yoshika meets Neuroi-tan. I still think Neuroi-tan is creepy.
- <3 Eila and Sanya in their underthings with messy hair.
- Jeeze, Yoshika even tries to cop a feel on a neuroi.
- And Mio leads us to another cliffhanger.

Good episode, though I think the high point of the series is definitely in the eps 4-8 period. The next 1-2 eps bothered me a bit on first viewing. Not that they were bad, but really, it's episodic character stories that this show does best, not plot.

I mostly agree. But beyond the original set-up of aliens attack, there really hasn't been any plot to speak of, it's been all about the girls (not that I'm complaining). Neuroi-tan is the first big plot movement the whole show.

I'm just saying, if they actually spent time on a plot in the first place, then they could have a good story. I guess that's kind of a 'duh' statement though.

Well, it seems Mio will be alright, thanks to Yoshika. She just needs to calm down and concentrate the first time though.

Totally worth using up all her magic, not just for Mio, but to wake up to Lynette's caring face! :beatingheart:

Damn, Erica's quick to jump to executions! She is just completely oblivious to all situations ^_^

Confirmation that Mio's eye was indeed her magical battle ability. She really does have the older, motherly type of look without her patch and usual clothes on. (though my opinion may partly be affected by her being in bed most of the episode)

Baths! Breasts! I have a feeling this may be the last time we see these girls having fun like this. I think Yoshika needs to make Fran her new sensei, at least with breast grabbing. Yoshika does a fine job of appreciating all breasts already, while Fran will always wind up with Shirley.

Good job Perrine! You finally got straight out, only for you praise from Mio. Perrine can die happily now.

Even though Yoshika owes a lot to Mio, and is very friendly with everyone; Yoshika/Lynette is a solid in my book. Lynette cares enough to go AWOL with her, and Yoshika cares enough to not let her go through with it. She used the guise of "this is something I decided", but really she didn't want anything bad to happen to Lynette. This was a good scene.

And then plot stuff. So, what's the Neuroi trying to say? "We invaded, shot first and asked questions second, our bad! But now humans are making weapons out of us, Help!" Uh - No. Just leave and don't come back.

The animation for this part of the episode was definitely kicked up a notch. The girls looked amazing while in the air, with all the wind rushing through their hair. And the new automated robot looked good too while doing it's thing.

Another cliffhanger, but at least you know what's up. Military guy wants all the glory back. Highlight for this episode; hm... probably a toss-up between the scene with Lynette and Yoshika, or Perrine finally getting attention and praise from Mio.

About the whole, "nobody listened to Yoshika"; it seemed pretty realistic to me. Her base commander doesn't want to hear about what she did, it's all besides the point. Yoshika always voiced her opinion around girls from Karlsland, who have lost family and friends, and have been fighting the longest. They don't want to hear about how the Neuroi could be 'misunderstood'. (I don't think Erica cared that much though) And it's not as if Yoshika found out some big, secret revelation that could end the war tomorrow. She just thinks that maybe there might be a way to not fight, which is what Yoshika wants in the first place.

So, I don't think the girls went out of their way to shun her for getting Mio shot down.

I always interpreted it as the first one crashed there accidentally, perhaps without doing anything to antagonize anyone and the others came looking for it. At the beginning of the series when we're first introduced to the Neuroi, it's the earth fighter planes that shoot at the electrical stormcloud/portal thing first before flying into it (and being absorbed/assimilated). It's not entirely unreasonable to think that their response would be to return fire when they emerged.

Up until this point, there hasn't apparently been any successful attempt by the Neuroi to communicate with humans and that we know of, any attempt by the humans to communicate with the Neuroi to try and determine their motives. That the whole thing could be a massive misunderstanding with them just trying to get their lost compatriot back doesn't seem that far outside the realm of reason (no less reasonable than, say, the W.o.R.M. from Sky Girls...).

But yeah- beyond getting to showcase the girls abilities and have some fun letting loose, the whole final plot of the show is a bit blah compared to the rest of the episodes. Sora no Woto handled the same thing a WHOLE lot better (though with less panties).

Episode 10:

- Mio got pretty messed up there. Nobody seems to attack Yoshika over it right away, which is quite unusual, but it seems like they're all too worried about Mio to do so. Once things settle down and Mio's condition stabilizes a bit, well, it's time to consider just what a stupid thing it was that Yoshika did. She deserved that slap from Perrine.
- Haha, oh Erica. She sounds so flippant (she'll get court martialed and shot! =D) but I think the "if that were the case I'd have been killed a bunch of times" line was anything but coincidental. Saying that in front of Minna had to be intentional because it would make Minna really think hard before handing down too harsh a punishment.
- And Yoshika saves Mio. But huh, Mio's eye is normal. I thought that maybe that was a sign that her magic was gone (couldn't remember what happened), but she indicates to Minna that she still plans to fly.
- Yoshika gets off easy. Ten days of confinement for blatantly obeying multiple orders from her superiors.
- Lynne knows the only way to cheer Yoshika up: get naked!
- Mmmm boobs. And hah, Shirley has been confined to her room five times before. :sd: (Lies, it was four! and six for Erica!)
- Erica really is way bustier than you'd expect.
- Double Bomber! Lucchini knows how to break up the tension. Groping solves everything!
- But it's not enough. Lynne is quite nice, but in the end Lucchini's home is in the fertile valley of Liberion. Oh man, you know who Lucchini and Charlotte remind me of? Tomoe and Miyako from Sasameki Koto. Especially the Francesca/Miyako side, doubly so for the Saitou Chiwa connection.
- And Erica goes for Trude. =D
- Mio is almost unrecognizable with her hair totally down and no eye patch.
- Lynne and Yoshika TOTALLY just exchanged vows.
- And now the 501st gets the order to shoot Yoshika down. Minna seems to have a plan though. Keeping Lynne and Perrine off this mission was probably a very good call.
- Though that does mean we're down to only Francesca, Charlotte and the Karlsland trio.
- Into the hive! Yoshika is having too much fun.
- And the Neuroi shows it all sorts of interesting things, just as an unknown mech comes by and blows shit up before leaving. Also, the animation gets ridiculously good all of a sudden.

And the military leadership pulls the typical late-series "We don't need you anymore, time to stab you in the back in favor of our super advanced weapon that I'm soooo sure will just work juuuust as planned, because clearly this time will be different!". K, whatever. :sd:

Yeah, exactly. Try telling people who have lost countless loved ones and seen their countries conquered and trampled that "maybe the neuroi ain't so bad" and you're going to get a cold shoulder.

And then plot stuff. So, what's the Neuroi trying to say? "We invaded, shot first and asked questions second, our bad! But now humans are making weapons out of us, Help!" Uh - No. Just leave and don't come back.I always interpreted it as the first one crashed there accidentally, perhaps without doing anything to antagonize anyone and the others came looking for it. At the beginning of the series when we're first introduced to the Neuroi, it's the earth fighter planes that shoot at the electrical stormcloud/portal thing first before flying into it (and being absorbed/assimilated). It's not entirely unreasonable to think that their response would be to return fire when they emerged.
To an extent, but just looking at the world map (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/25/StrikeWitchesWorldMap.JPG) (or what's left of it) kinda indicates to me that... things went a bit too far. I mean that map right there represents a death toll of, jeeze... even considering the world population in the mid 40's was only about 2.5 billion, possibly upwards of a billion people. Whatever the Neuroi did then they landed made huge chunks of the earth disappear. It's hard to feel sympathy for the Neuroi at that point.

Corporal Slowpoke reporting! :keroro:

...Anyway, I just finished episode 5 -- the beach episode. I suspected as much when I purchased the first two episodes off Crunchyroll, but this confirms it: Strike Witches is the greatest show since Onegai Twins. You have to love a series where the production staff understand that priority #1 is pandering to the fanbase without a shred of remorse.

And somebody needs to assign Yoshika and Lynette to a shared bunk, stat. Brittanian nights are stressful and cold; the only way to ensure proper combat performance is if the two of them conserve energy through the direct body-heat transfer method. It's scientifically approved!

Besides plot stuff, there were only a couple of honorable mentions this episode.

My favorite "going away" pair was Eila/Sanya, just sitting on the log stack going home, it looked very peaceful. :) But like, they can't afford actual train tickets?

The scene were the Karlsland girls got off the bus was fun too. It seems that Yoshika has more power over Gertrud then I thought, as it was her idea to stop. (or maybe she just can't separate Yoshika and her sister) Then Minna telling Barkhorn to "Shh" was cute, but her little gesture afterward looks completely goofy outside of the ED  Lastly, we have Erica actually being proactive and trying to get the girls a ride, to no avail. (personally, I just think she wanted to show off those legs of hers.)

So, did the Warlock go haywire? Or did the Neuroi somehow 'infect' it when it took control of all of them? Either way, this is one of the outcomes I guessed would happen. It would go out of control, and the girls would have to save the day while exposing evil military guy.

I watched this episode dubbed, but is the military guy's lines just as cheesy in the subs? Especially when he was talking about not needing the girls, the dialog was just god awful. Makes me wonder how thrown together these last episodes were.

Final Episode tomorrow! Good Luck girls!

It's been a while since I saw it, but I doubt there is much difference in the dialogue. The show makes a concerted effort make him the most generically evil military guy possible, so that would include cheesy B-grade villain dialogue.

Yeah, he's one of the worse anime villains in a while IMO. At least the WoRM didn't generally spew stupid and cliche lines...

Episode 11:

- lol, most boring military leadership backstab-takeover ever. Oh Strike Witches, why did you waste time on a stupid thing like plot? That's totally missing the point!
- Poor Yoshika. Lynne, you know what would cheer her up!
- Yep. Sittin' on some logs. Bye bye, Eila and Sanya ;_;
- Hah, Charlotte and Francesca don't look too broken up. They're going to fly, strikers or no strikers! Fly in the Glamorous Shirley! Hah, Francesca worries about it making it to Romagia and Shirley reminds her she has to go back over the Atlantic in it.
- I'm sure Perrine has never been happier to have her country conquered by the neuroi. She gets to go to Fusou with Mio! I don't think she'll get along well with the food though.
- Hahah, Minna steals a kiss and does her little hand gesture and pose from the ED. The Karlsland girls aren't giving up!
- Ahahaha, Erica trying to hitchhike. Jeeze, I'd stop my truck for her any day. If you know what I mean. ...and what I mean is that she should get a threesome going with Minna and Trude right now.
- Oh what do you know, the Warlock doesn't work correctly! SHOCK OF THE CENTURY.
- Anyway, time for the witches to go back into action. Good thing this all happened before everyone was too far away. Also good that wheelchairs in anime by definition are awesome, so Mio has a Striker Unit in hers. =D

This episode wasn't as bad as I remembered, but it's still the weakest one, easily. Entirely because of the boring villain, of course. The stuff about the witches themselves was still fun.

Hi, where did you heard that song which u said, "Negai no Tomoshibi"? I wish to hear it.:)

Minna's rendition of "Lili Marleen" was replaced by "Negai no Tomoshibi", according to Fencedude. Can't locate any information on that song though, the only google hit for "negai no tomoshibi" as a phrase is from this thread. Poked around for it in Japanese but not too deeply, kinda at work and such. So I'm not sure what disc it's on (it's not on the character song CD she's a part of), assuming it was ever released.

I assume there were no other replacements. As far as I know Lili Marleen is the only song in the show that isn't original to the show so there wouldn't have been any other issues. Still an annoying one though.

Picking up from last time, Yoshika decides to battle the warlock on her own; while the other girls are coming back to help.

I guess Gertrud's magic is super strength, OUCH! I wonder what that 1 guy did to piss her off, everybody else just gave up immediately. Girders are also no match for Gertrud.

Even though this is the last episode, Yoshika is making it really hard to not get annoyed at her. "You're not a Neuroi, you're an Enemy!" Right so, Neuroi are our buddies now, yes? What the heck are you going to do in season 2?

Hah! Eila is incapable of two things: 1) Tell her true feelings, and 2) Tell a lie to save her life. It's quite adorable, but someone needs to tell her it's okay just being herself. :)

Lynette running! :beatingheart: Why can't more girls have an awkward sense of running like her? It's only the best thing ever!

And the rest of the girls join Yoshika for battle! Of course Lynette takes it down in one shot, she MUST have her Yoshika time!

An even more ridiculous enemy approaches... although, if this quick plot line had any positives, it would be this giant thing; as I very much enjoyed watching the witches work together to fight the battleship.

Minna and Mio are now joined for life, using their powers together to figure out were the core is. There's no way that Minna is ever letting go of that hand. Even when they go to their respective countries, Minna is still holding on.

Don't really get what Hartmann's magic is. It seemed to be some sort of spin attack, but it seemed that Gertrud was the one that did all the damage after the fact.

Lucchini RAM! Taking a page out of Shirley's book, albeit a much more controlled ramming (as her clothes didn't disintegrate).

Yoshika, Lynette, and Perrine make their way inside. Perrine uses her magic to make a perfect hexagonal shape that leads to the core. Hold Yoshika, reverse thrusters, Yay Core destroyed!

Which... apparently leads to the entire den disappearing. That seems quite odd. I guess Neuroi-tan was making a deal with Yoshika, get rid of the warlock, and we'll leave this area. So, the way to get rid of the Neuroi across the world is... Let's make a deal?

Heh, Oppai hunter has been hunted! Lynette and Perrine both take credit for the kill  But Perrine soon realizes what she's doing and lets Lynette have Yoshika all to herself, like it should be.

Oh...disbanded for real huh? I guess the unit was commissioned specifically for that den. Perrine looked beside herself when she realized Gallia was safe, very moving.

Going away pairings for real this time. Karlsland girls being funny, Eila still watching Sanya from afar, Shirley and Fran being their crazy selves...

Wait, what? When did Lynette/Perrine happen? Did I miss an episode? Well, whatever; it is only a hop from Britannia to Gallia. Short travel to help out a friend start to rebuild her country; and Lynette is exactly the type to do that. Lynette is so awesome!

Finally, back to Fuso, where Yoshika still gets trained by her mother and grandma on controlling her magic. She's progressed to the point of helping a small bird very quickly, so that's good...

And new witch falls from the sky! Hell, why not introduce a new character with 3 seconds to go? :P It looks like she has on a Karlsland uniform on. Or maybe whatever this show is going to call China.

Another letter from her dad? Talk about your open endings!

Wow, what a show! In the span of watching all twelve episodes, I've probably rewatched a good half of them already. One thing I was worried about, watching a show in this manner, was losing perceptive. One episode a week gives time to let everything sink in, while a marathon give you a feeling for the entire show right then. But doing once a day, I feared that I would get caught up in each individual episode, and not see the bigger picture. Well, I can say that didn't happen. Overall, this show is a solid B/B+. It might not be the "best" or "epic" or anything like that (well, it IS epic for what it does in the first place); but what this show has is fun! This is easily the most fun I've had watching a show (in R1) in a long time!

For the next season, besides Yoshika, I want a whole new cast of girls, with the occasional cameo appearance. And if they're going to have a plot line, try crafting one right from the beginning.

Alright! Time to hand out awards:
Favorite Witch:
Lynette Bishop - It was close, but the last episode sealed the deal. With the way she runs (beach episode too), and the way she is helping Perrine in Gallia; Lynette rose to the top as my favorite.

Rounding out the top 3:
#2 - Sanya Litvyak: Cute and shy, but also caring and ready for anything. With her radar ability, she definitely an indispensable teammate.
#3 - Minna Wilcke: Very well-rounded, very caring women. Perhaps a bit too dependent, but that just a part of her charm.

Favorite Pair:
Charlotte "Shirley" Yeager and Francesca Lucchini - They were hilarious the entire show. The 501st would have been a much drabber, not as fun place to be without these two. They really are the catalyst that can bring an entire group together.

Different methods have their uses, and it all really contingent upon what kind of discussion you can get out of it. A marathon can be a nice way to immerse yourself but it pretty much kills any chance of talking about it with other people beyond a big gush at the end which dies down quickly. It's best used when you know a spread out discussion thread isn't going to take hold. Week to week creates a long gap between episodes which can be killer, but it's simply the best way to watch something if we're talking first-airing, discussion thread style. Just seeing the fandom come together and change over the course of the series as the show itself changes is something that simply cannot be replicated at any time other than the initial airing.

But for these after-the-fact discussion threads, where it's a mix of new fans and existing fans, usually well after the initial airing is over, it has to be handled differently. The format we've gradually built up here in GA of episode by episode with 1-3 days between and a de facto "discussion leader" setting a pace - that's definitely a really good one. A week between is just too long in that situation, but a marathon leaves no room for ongoing discussion. And having some structure is critical. Just throwing a thread out there and saying "I'm gonna watch [Show], discuss!" without any kind of guidance leads to threads sputtering out.

Of course timing has to be right. If it's after an R1 release, or some other event that would conceivably pull in new fans after the initial airing is over, that's best. Not too soon (people might not have the release yet), but not too late (people might have watched it all by the time the thread starts). And not too soon after initial airing. I love Sora no Woto, but clearly I wouldn't want to create a brand new discussion thread on it already. :sd: 3-4 cour really need to pass first. And of course, it has to be something that a lot of people like if you want robust discussion. Hence the success of threads on this, Clannad, Aria, Nanoha, etc.

Overall, this show is a solid B/B+. It might not be the "best" or "epic" or anything like that (well, it IS epic for what it does in the first place); but what this show has is fun! This is easily the most fun I've had watching a show (in R1) in a long time!
Again, I still need to watch ep 12 again but if I didn't mind 11, which is the weakest episode, then I have no doubt I'll love 12 again. I gave Strike Witches an 8/10 when I first saw it (my "really quite fun with great characters but not top tier show" grade) and it definitely deserved it. The rewatch has been very kind to it. Not all shows hold up on rewatch, but this one easily has.

For the next season, besides Yoshika, I want a whole new cast of girls, with the occasional cameo appearance.
Nah, just double the size of the 501st. =D Bathing scenes will be deliciously chaotic.

Favorite Witch:
I still don't know. :sd: There's a lot to like about Yoshika, but also Lynne. The witches that stand on their own the best are probably Yoshika and post-bitch (or less bitchy) Perrine, plus Erica for comedy. A lot of the witches are much more appealing when paired, such as Sanya/Eila and Charlotte/Francesca. Those two pairs in particular I just can not separate.

Every single one of them is great though.

And now to finish this off.

Episode 12:

- Aww, poor Akagi. Nice teamwork by Mio, Perrrrrrrine and Yoshika though.
- Haha, oh Charlotte, you just now remember you're unarmed.
- And the Karlsland trio reclaim the base. =D
- Oh Yoshika, stop being so hesitant. And naive! Oh well at least she realized the Warlock is different. it has nothing to grope, so clearly it has no reason to exist!
- Sunao ja nai~, Trude and Eila! =D And good god Eila, you are adorable.
- And we finally see Trude's power. Super strength! The only one we haven't gotten is Francesca, isn't it?
- Aww, Mio, you're so loved. Perrine will not let go!
- Ooh, right, Francesca is about to use her power.
- ...Still not sure what it is, though. But it helps save Mio and Perrine!
- Oh Lynette, you run so cutely.
- And you snipe so cutely too! Of course the episode isn't over so the Akagi has to become a neuroi too...
- Old maid Mio still has a bit of magic left!
- Mio and Minna holding hands! <3 <3
- Ahahaha, Perrine you lovely tsundere.
- Awwwwwwwwww, Eila holding Sanya and predicting the attacks while Sanya fires. I could diiiiie <3
- LUCCHINI BOMBER! They're a bit vague about her power, but it basically looks to be what wiki says it is: "the power to concentrate energy into a point in front of her, and release it in one powerful burst." Sounds about right to me.
- Into the AkagiNeuroiWarlockThing! Awesome animation ensues. Lynne and Yoshika lose their weapons, but that's what Perrine is for! BIRIBIRI!
- And the striker units become the final weapon.
- Much cuteness as the ED plays. And Perrine's homeland is freed! Awww <3 Loved all the images. Karlsland girls, Sanya and Eila, Perrine and Lynne, Francesca and Charlotte, and Sakamoto-sensei! Whipping them Fusou girls into shape!

Interesting that Lynne and Perrine are paired up in the ED, but it just seems like a matter of convenience to me, because they didn't have anywhere else to go (since Yoshika would return to Fusou). Also makes sense for Lynne to help oversee the reconstruction of Gallia since as a Britannian she's the closest.

Oh wait, did you want an explanation of what the neuroi are, why the hive disappeared, and why they contacted Yoshika? Hahaha, fat chance! ...although the lack of explanation seems less significant today, now that a second season is confirmed. Not that it matters much. Just gimmie the girls!

Post-ED:
- Micchan is back!
- And another witch? Suwa Amaki. Holy crap that's Hanazawa Kana. SHE BETTER BE IN SEASON TWO!
- Hahaha, yes, that. What a place to end it.

<3 this show~

Don't really get what Hartmann's magic is. It seemed to be some sort of spin attack, but it seemed that Gertrud was the one that did all the damage after the fact.
Something about controlling wind, hence the Sturm (storm) name.

It looks like she has on a Karlsland uniform on. Or maybe whatever this show is going to call China.
With a name like Suwa Amaki, she's definitely Japanese. Er, Fusou-an. She's got the Rising Sun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_Sun_Flag) military flag on her striker unit too. I also believe Mio is attached to the Fusou Navy, which would explain why her uniform is different.

My thoughts:
- Perrine, Sanya, Charlotte, Lucchini and Lynette are my favorites.
- The Warlock looks like the Vic Viper when it opens up to fire in fighter mode.
