Awhile ago, we had a thread about the first 16:9 TV anime. For the curious, it was most likely Betterman, from Spring 1999. That got me thinking about the other side of the equation: what has been the last (by starting airdate) 4:3 TV anime*? This means anime that aired in 4:3 and didn't get a later broadcast or DVD/BD release in 16:9. So Clannad, K-On!, Queen's Blade, Juuden-chan, Ikki-Tousen GG and the like don't count.

With that in mind, the last 4:3 anime I know of is Manabi Straight, which aired in the Winter 2007 season. Does anyone know of any 4:3 anime that began airing after that point in time? I know Gintama stayed 4:3 until the bitter end, but it doesn't count since it started in Spring 2006.

*Since Chi's New Home was a 5-minute, all-ages show instead of a standard-length anime, I'd like to exclude it as well.

Hmm...that is an interesting question, I think you may be correct, or at least very close.

Ikkitousen XX is airing in 4:3 right now.

edit: read first post properly, me. Although XX doesn't *yet* have a 16:9 release. ^^;

Yeah, but its made in 16:9, just being cropped for broadcast. He's looking for the last native 4:3 anime.

Does Dragon Ball Kai count? IIRC it's airing in 16:9 but the home video releases are uncropped 4:3.

Its a remastering of the original DBZ, so I don't see why it would.

Keroro Gunso was being made in 4:3 until just like 2 weeks ago. It took them long enough, but it's finally airing in 16:9 (and with true 720p resolution).

Interesting that it took them so long.

Do you know when Naruto and One Piece switched to 16:9?

I don't watch Naruto, but One Piece has been in 16:9 since shortly after the "Kokoro no Chizu" opening started (the OP was cropped for the first few times it was shown). Episode 207 according to Wikipedia (which also says is when it started airing in HD, but I'm pretty sure it was just upscaled SD for another few years).

Naruto Shippuuden switched to 16:9 on April 3rd 2008. (Which was about three months after I dropped the show, but I know that's when it happened because the third opening, which was widescreen, premiered then.)
One Piece switched formats on October 31st 2004.

Uh, no, it switched to widescreen as soon as the fifth opening came around. The DVDs, for whatever reason, stayed in 4:3 format until episode 229, but the first widescreen-episode was definitely episode 207.
As for the whole HD-thing, well, there certainly aren't any HD-recordings around for anything prior to episode 261, but it was definitely produced in HD from episode 207, seeing how all the flashbacks to the Water 7-arc in the newer episodes are very clearly proper HD.
