"Ignore" List ... best thing since sliced bread?

Posted 07-08-2009 at 09:23 PM by LelouchLamperouge
I haven't used the blog in almost 2 months, time to remedy that.

You know, I tried to avoid using the function if at all possible, but sometimes I just get so irked at how blatantly ignorant people are and use it. I mean, where is the common sense anymore? Why do people ask questions when the answer takes 5 minutes to look up on Google or use the Forum search button? It just gets so aggravating and I'd like to rip off someone's face as a result. I hope I never have to use the function again, but I'm glad its there should I need to do it. I can't possibly think of what it would be like without the Ignore list. I'd probably go insane (if I'm not there already).

Do you keep an Ignore list? If so, isn't it the most useful thing ever? If not, are you still sane?

I'm personally not a fan of ignore lists. It is representative of the difference between how people communicate with each other online vs. face to face. There is no ignore feature in real life, and if we all tried to relate to each other with the same intentions and honesty we would face to face maybe the internet would not be composed of pure shit 99.9% of the time. Sure some people just don't get along, and in that case I just ignore them the good old fashioned way. By not reading their remarks. But to make it as though they don't exist is just too convenient if you ask me. A person shouldn't be able to just selectively turn off the parts of society they don't prefer, it limits our experiences and impedes social development.

That sounds more preachy than I intended it to be actually. I've actually found value in the confrontations with people I would seek to ignore from time to time. You just never know.

I've got to agree with Ty, I've never been a big fan of Ignore Lists myself.

I've never used the Ignore List and probably never will. I don't use any such equivalent feature on other sites either. I like to be able to read all users' posts in threads I'm interested in. If anything annoys me, I skim over it on my own accord and don't want anything automatically blocked off.

I occasionally put certain users who never contribute anything of value to a discussion (that is to say, trolls). But the Mods tend to do a good job at either getting them in-line or weeding them out, so it's not very often.

Add me to the list of people that don't bother with ignore lists. I just don't see any need for it. I can always skim past a post if need be.

I've never done one either - Adding someone to ignore doesn't make the problem go away, it just makes it so I can't see it.
