(Yeah, a simple and plain title, but it gets the point across.) =\

Hello, and welcome to my blog. My entries will often be about my musings and thoughts on anime/manga and its various titles, as well as the occasional entry not related to either anime or manga. Additional things also might be blogged about in the future, perhaps.

Entries will be made rather randomly. I blog when I feel like it, so at times I might be blogging rather sporadically, while at other times I might churn out entries frequently.

And that's all there is to it! I hope you like what you read.

Thoughts on Persona 4 (so far)

Well, I finally got it.

I got it during Labour Day (Sept. 7), at an EB Games in a city diriectly above Toronto. I was browsing the shop, when I saw it. Its price tag had lowered by $15 ($34.99 CDN).

I had been somewhat interested in the game for months through friends as well as Classical's write-up on it, but never really got around to buying it. After all, I'm really not an RPG kind of person. But knowing that Atlus isn't a company that keeps their games on the shelves for long and having my curiosity getting the better of me, I caved.

I've only played the game thrice since its purchase (once three weeks after I bought it, and twice within the past two weeks), each time only progressing about 2-3 days - I've only just unlocked Tomoe. Regardless, I'm slowly (but surely) starting to get into it.

The story is very intriguing, for sure. Funky murders right before a foggy day? Count me in. The mystery-loving part of me is really digging it.

The characters are a fun bunch so far, as well. As of this moment, I'm really liking Chie. Her type of girl seldom interests me as strongly this instance, so I was sure surprised when I was. It also helps that I haven't seen too much of Yukiko yet. Her voice plays a big part of my liking for her, so kudos to Tracey Rooney for voicing her well. That might change when Naoto pops up, though. Plus, Nanako singing the Junes tune is d'awwwwww.

As for the gameplay, it hasn't become overwhelming just yet, but I'm somewhat expecting it to soon. I'm likely going to make a fair number of bad choices along the way, plus there seems to be so/too much one can do with their personas and weapons. There's so many questions I have - which weapons are best to use, what to fuse and not to fuse, ahhh! I don't have the luxury to play it often at this time.

I'm really digging the soundtrack, too. Aria of the Soul and another song that I don't know the name of that wasn't included in the Side A soundtrack are currently my favourites. (It's an upbeat song with lyrics that was used at home once or twice) in the very beginning.

One more thing - I didn't expect the cut scenes to consist of anime clips. That was a pleasant surprise.

This is the first non-Pokemon RPG I've played since FFX (which I only completed roughly 2 years ago) and only the third non-Pokemon RPG game I've ever played, so here's hoping that I'll really get into it!

Nanako is just so cute that it should be illegal.

As far as the game itself goes, it can be overwhelming deciding what to do with personas/weapons/etc. I'm not really sure how much weight the stats on armor/weapons have in battle, but persona stats also tend to affect how much damage you can deal/take as well. Even if you don't have equipment on your characters that's very high in defense/attack (for whatever point you are in the game) you can partly compensate for it by getting a persona with high strength/magic and defense. Also, elements, as you may have already noticed, play a significant part in the game. It can be very useful to have a variety of personas with elemental strengths. This way you can switch personas and not be left open to certain boss/enemy attacks that can hit your weak points. One more thing about elemental weaknesses, it's a very good idea to get personas who null/reflect light and dark skills. It can be frustrating to get a game over just because your main character got hit by a light/dark spell and was KO'ed by some random enemy. It shouldn't be a problem early on in the game, but eventually enemies are going to start getting instant kill spells.

As far as fusions go, it's usually best to fuse for personas of arcana you have a high level social link with. This way they're easier to level up and they can get better skills with less effort. I already said that elemental weaknesses/strengths were important, but making sure the persona you're trying to get via fusion is getting some good skills is also important. The more skills the personas you're fusing have, the more skills the persona you're fusing for will get. Equally important, you can select the same combination of personas over and over until you get the skills you want on the persona you're trying to get (just make sure you don't actually fuse the persona until the skills you want show up). As far as skills go, most of them have their uses, and which ones you should get mostly depends on what kind of persona you want to make. If you want a persona that can deal lots of physical damage, you want skills that can do lots of damage (most of the descriptions of the skills should tell you how much damage [in relation to other skills] they'll do). Of course, it's also a good idea to have a person with high strength and defense, especially since physical skills use HP. In a way, Persona 4 battles are like Pokemon. You try to get pokemon that have abilities that strike the weak points of your opponent's pokemon, and you also want your pokemon to be resistant against your opponent pokemon's attack. It's a bit simplified, but that's how things generally go in these Shin Megami Tensei games.

I've rambled on for too long, so happy gaming!
