Sadly, this site seems to attract not only fandom, but a good measure of fan dumb.

I won't deny the fandumb factor, nor the fact it can be dangerously contagious.

When I judge a title as a good business decision it's more along the lines of saying that it made sense that they pick up that title. Of course the titles I like are deemed "bad" for business so they hardly ever get licensed!
But yeah we fans can't really say either way if how the companies do business is bad or good, we can speculate and obviously see the results of some decisions. I think we really do it because if we didn't there would be much else to talk about? But generally it all gets summed up as WE HAVE NO F'IN CLUE! XD I really think the problem is the seriousness some fans take about the situation. It gets very ridiculous! |

I always have gotten that feeling going into such events. And more times than not, I come out feeling like those Jets fans seeing their front office screw up their picks.

I think some of the problem is the same as the people who take pro sports to seriously-you know, they one's who say "we" when talking about the team but the closest they have been to the field is buying a replica jersey and sitting in the bleachers. It is a false sense of ownership of the property and what they expect to be done for them. In some ways anime companies have it worse in that most came up as small companies who tried to be on somewhat familiar footing with their fans-which got harder when times were fat and the gold was flowing-but when times got lean fans still expect the treatment they got during the prosperous times. Throw in that anime watching in this country started on the small scale fan level and fans feel some ownership and stewardship of it's direction (as the link TGB posted states) and the next thing you know anime companies are trying to fend off the rabid dog fans while also still keeping them on the leash and (somewhat) loyal. But ever fan has a different want and thanks to the internet the ability to cry to the heavens that his (or her) desires are not being met, therefore the whole thing is rotten.
That said do I get disappointed when something I really want isn't licensed? Yes. But I would like to think I am (mostly ) rational enough to realize that it is for a bigger reason than just the company is trying to snub me. Maybe the move I don't agree with will succeed and maybe it will fail, but in the end I am just buying one copy (if, depending on the series) and they are making the best decision they think they can to continue to have a place to draw a paycheck from (OK, and some have love of the genera as well) and the whole thing is bigger than just my wants. Though I would love to have some of those filled. ![]() Heck, I loved most of Geneon's stuff, and look what that got them. And as to momentum...in sports momentum is just until the next game starts, in anime it may just last until the next Tuesday...and "momentum" is already fighting them with so many people seeming to not buy anything anymore anyway. |
