During the period leading up to the DC War, the Earth Federation forces started several experimental projects to develop new Personal Troopers. One of these projects, codenamed Project ATX, was placed under the supervision of Dr. Marion Radom
, a slightly eccentric scientist specializing in PT design. From the outset, Marion declared her designs would use none of the alien derived "Extra Over Technology" being used by the SRX Project and the EOTI institute. She firmly believed that humans could create technology just as effective as what was discovered inside the remains of Meteor 3 on Aidoneous Island.
Marion decided to begin with what was originally a failed prototype, the PTX-003 Gespenst Test Type. The third of the original Gespenst models (after the PTX-001 Gespenst Rapidity Type and the PTX-002 Gespenst Strength Type), it had developed a number of flaws during initial testing, and was placed in storage, having never passed beyond initial construction. She started by stripping it down to the bare frame, and then re-built it from the ground up.
The concept for this mech was "breaking through", she wanted to create a machine that could break through any defense, so she focused solely on crushing close in offensive power. Mounted on the right arm is the Revolver Stake, an explosive powered pile-driver, capable of penetrating the thickest armor. On the left arm are the triple gatling cannons, for ranged offense and harassment. Mounted on the head is the Heat Horn, a close in weapon that heats to extreme temperatures to burn through enemy units. And finally, mounted on the shoulders are the Heavy Claymore, which can best be described as upscaled, reusable, claymore mines. They explosively propel thousands of titanium bearings at the enemy, an absolutely devastating short range attack.
After the completion of the new unit, which Marion wanted to call the "Gespenst Mk.III", a new problem was discovered. No one seemed capable of piloting it. The extreme weapon loadout, and the unbalance created by the Heavy Claymores mounted on the shoulders made it incredibly difficult to pilot. Ace after ace tried, and failed, to use the machine. In the process it gained the moniker "Alteisen", or "Old Iron", a name that Marion detested, but ended up sticking, much to her chagrin. Eventually however Marion heard of a pilot at the Izu base in Japan, Kyousuke Nanbu
, who was said to have incredible luck, and had a confirmed record of surviving things he really shouldn't have come out of in one piece.
Marion asked that Kyousuke be transferred from Izu Base to Langley Base, where the ATX Project was headquartered. Kyousuke's arrival coincided with mysterious attacks on Langley, both by what appeared to be a human terrorist organization, and by mysterious machines unlike anything seen on Earth. Kyousuke's first time in the Alteisen was during one of these attacks, and he took to the machine like an old glove.
As the DC War began and ended, followed by the Aerogator conflict and the L5 Campaign, Kyousuke and the Alteisen became feared on the battlefield, an unstoppable force that blasted through all opposition.
