The Gespenst series of prototype Personal Troopers had focused on two different philosophies, termed "Rapidity" and "Strength", ultimately the Rapidity concept won out for mass production, however some merit was seen in the data collected by the Strength units. This data was taken by Jonathan Kazahara, head of the Tesla Reich Institute in the American Mountain West, and was used to develop a new type of mobile weapon. Significantly larger than the PTs being produced by companies such as Mao Industries, the units being developed at TRI were dubbed "Special Units", and tended to focus on hard hitting melee range attacks.
The flagship of these units is the Grungust Type-1, generally known just as the "Grungust", it is a large scale, variable mobile weapon. The Grungust is constructed from a special memory-metal alloy, which allows it to transform into one of three specialized forms, the Robot Grungust, the flying WingGust and the Tank Gustlander. Each mode is specialized in its own way, however the Grungust form is the most powerful and versatile, but also the most limited in range, WingGust and Gustlander gain mobility and range respectively, but lack the hard hitting power of the Grungust mode.
Three Grungust Type-1's were constructed in the period leading up to the DC War, the first one, SRG-01-1 was issued to Irmgult Kazahara and has been his personal unit ever since. The second unit, SRG-01-2, which has a red color scheme and a slightly different head, was used briefly by Brooklyn "Bullet" Luckfield during the L5 campaign against the Aerogaters. The third unit has yet to be deployed, and is believed to still be in storage at TRI.
