A random blog about anime, sports, and other items I feel like talking about. The above image is an amalgamation of Hanamaru Kindergarten and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which was displayed in the Hanamaru Kindergarten Fan Club at MyAnimeList.net (the club I'm a member in).

The 2011 List of Banned Words and Phrases

Posted 01-01-2011 at 07:10 AM by bci110
Happy New Year, everyone!

As per tradition with the turning of the calendar, at the start of every year the students of Lake Superior State University in upstate Michigan reveals their annual "List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Over-use, and General Uselessness". This year marks the 36th renewal of the tradition.

A couple of the words and phrases that made this year's list were the Sarah Palin-created word "refudiate" and her go-to phrase "Mama Grizzlies". Most of the words on this year's list are terms often used online by people who fail to properly socialize offline. It does seem that this year's list was more targeted towards the social networking and search engine sites such as Facebook and Google (BTW, those two made the list), whereas in the past the majority of the words were political and/or economical in nature. Doesn't look like the case for this year's list.

So without further ado, here's the 2011 List of Banned Words and Phrases:

Viral
Epic
Fail (and I assume that the phrase "epic fail" by default is considered banned)
Wow Factor
A-Ha Moment
Back Story
BFF
Man Up
refudiate
Mama Grizzlies
The American People
I'm just sayin'
Facebook/Google as verbs
Live Life to the Fullest

Unfortunately my dream of seeing the phrase "license rescue" make the banned list will continue to be a dream...

I would be happy to see these cliched buzzwords go (and, shamefully, I'm guilty of using most of them).

I must admit, however, that I've never even *heard* of "A-Ha Moment" before. I assume it has nothing to do with the band that sang "Take On Me" back in the 80's.

Nope Mr. Nail Bat, "A-Ha Moment" was coined by Oprah... when she had some sort of epiphany... I think about why she was always gaining weight or something. :/

World of Warcraft Factor? Never heard of that one.

I think the word "weeaboo" should be banned. These days it's only used to address anime fans and that's not even what it means. It fact, I don't even think it's a real word at all.

I agree with that list 100%. I'm tired of seeing people use "epic" every other word when describing something. The word has gotten so overused that it really doesn't carry much weight as it used to.

I disagree with some of these. There is nothing wrong with using the word "Google" as a verb. It simple means to bowl a googly in cricket.
