The 2011 Anime Draft - Coach's Interview (Part 1)
Posted 01-29-2011 at 04:49 PM by bci110
During the course of the Anime Draft, sideline reported (and former champion) Nosredna fielded questions about my selections, why I chose those particular characters, and how I feel they will do in the voting phase of the draft. This blog post covers my first 6 selections. The second half of the interview will be posted after the conclusion of the drafting phase.
My draft picks in the first half of the 2011 Anime Draft:
Round 1 (#4) - Ikamusume, Shinryaku! Ikamusume
Round 2 (#24) - Kaname Chidori, Full Metal Panic!
Round 3 (#57) - Edward Elric, Fullmetal Alchemist
Round 4 (#70) - Nanoha Takamachi, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
Round 5 (#91) - Lucy/Nyu, Elfen Lied
Round 6 (#106) - Kanata Sorami, Sora no Woto
The Interview, Part 1:
Coach bci, congrats on your fourth place showing, I have no idea who your first round pick was, are you surprised with her success since she's in a relatively new show right?
Thanks. I was pleasantly surprised how well Ika-Musume did in the first round. I thought she would finish in the middle of the pack given as you mentioned she's from a recent show. But there was a good following of the series and the fact that Crunchyroll streamed it helped her cause in my view.
What did you like about her to take her in round one?
Ika-chan quickly became a favorite character of mine with her clueless attempts at world domination and her cute demeanor. But what I really loved about her was how well she interacted with the other characters in the series, mainly with Eiko and Chizuru. She proved to be a pretty lovable and fun character to watch.
Are you surprised Kaname fell to round 2?
No, not at all. Kaname's usually a second-round character anyway so I knew that she would be available, especially given the draft position I was in.
How are you expecting her to do?
I think she'll do fine. Full Metal Panic still has strong fan support after all these years so I believe that she'll get her votes.
Two of the bigger names, how are you expecting Edward and Nanoha to do and what do you think Brotherhood and the Nanoha movie will help their popularity?
Yep two of the bigger names out there, and hopefully they'll give me that elusive round win that I came close to getting at the end of last year's draft. But moreso they're a couple of powerful characters than can help Ika-chan obtain her goal of world conquest. Though the two of them will probably most likely just want to be pals with her (especially Nanoha). I believe that Brotherhood's airing on Adult Swim and the Nanoha movie (which I'm ashame to say I haven't seen yet) will greatly amplify their popularity, of which I'm hoping will reflect positively for me in the voting stage.
Coach bci is Kanata your favorite Sora no Woto character? What aspects of her do you like?
Yes, Kana is my favorite character on Sora no Woto. I like her cheerful nature and her optimism even when facing dire circumstances or when the odds are stacked against her and her friends. She's also pretty good at playing the trumpet. It's nice to have another character with military experience on my team to help out Ika-chan (Edward Elric and to a lesser degree Nanoha are the only other characters that I have with some military experience). Plus I consider Kana to be Ika-chan's "sister" mainly because they share the same seiyuu.
Elfen Lied certainly had a following around here, with it also being a few years older how are you expecting Lucy to do and what did you like about her to take her?
Yeah Elfen Lied is an older show and probably did lose some of its appeal over the years. I think Lucy might do fine considering that the competition on Round 5 is not as difficult as it appears, but you never know in this draft. Being a Diclonius, Lucy possesses a very fearsome and deadly power that can obliterate almost any adversary, a nice power for Ika-chan to exploit if she ends up in a tight situation. But she also has a gentler, cuter side that can be used as a decoy.
