Power of an Imouto, Part 2...or how my habits as a fan has changed

Okay...so I got my fangasm over Kousaka Kirino out of way a few weeks ago. Now, of course, one might wonder how she relates to my viewing and buying habits as a fan of anime and such things.

She is one of the main characters of Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai. Now, it was my most anticipated Fall 2010 show since the anime announcement was made. I was super happy when the show finally got green-lit as a previous adaptation was canceled (I can't seem to find that news piece anymore). I watched every episode every week and it was the first show that I actively wanted to import the blu-ray home media releases.

Whoa, yea, those were firsts and this show changed my viewing and buying habits as an anime fan. In the past, besides buying the Shakugan no Shana movie, I never thought about importing anime dvds from Japan because a) too expensive and b) two episodes, maybe three per disc! I've been actively buying DVD releases for about 8 years nows and I hated buying singles releases in R1 because I though they were too expensive per disc (this is before discovering TRSI) and the time between each disc was way too long. I liked buying boxsets when they were released.

Buying boxsets were nice because I was able to watch the show at my own pace in one-shot, maybe 3-5 episodes per day. Because of wanting to watch a show in one-shot, I never watched currently airing anime on a weekly. But, with OreImouto, I had to watch each episode every week because I loved it and wanted to know what happened in the next episode. That and to see the lovely Kirino.

So, besides changing my buying and viewing habits, the show also changed how I interact and post on the forums here. I'm much more active in the General Discussion and R2 subforum than before. I think it was this year that I finally reached the 1000 post mark...mostly due in part to my participation in the OreImouto thread (I think I'm in the top 10 of people who posted in that thread).

Now, in 2011, I'm buying expensive Japanese imports and watching anime on a weekly basis. I guess it's a show I can mark as a milestone as an anime fan. Side-note: OreImouto also introduced me to the awesome artist/musician/animator Kanzaki Hiro.

So, is there a particular anime series you remember that changed your habits as a fan?

Kanon. A friend recommended I watch it (2002) the fall after I graduated, and it changed my life. Before, I more or less watched the anime I was supposed to. Basically, whatever was popular. Heck, at one point in college, I was literally basing my picks on how much literary value academic journal articles said an anime had (and made fun of my best friend for watching the girly Card Captor Sakura). But Kanon changed all that. Kanon--and in particular--Ayu taught me the exuberance of moe and caused me to fall in love with visual novels. Then Kanon (2006) turned me into an importer. I haven't looked back since.

I must also give an honorable mention to D.C.~Da Capo~, where I first experienced moe (even if I didn't realize what the feeling was until after I had seen Kanon). D.C. is one of those rare shows that I grow fonder of as the years pass...

Wait, I'm not supposed to post on blog entries! Well, it's an interesting topic and probably deserves its own forum thread, though it kinda straddles R2 and GA so I don't know where one would place it.

Anyway, changing viewing habits (type of show)? Full Moon wo Sagashite. It's okay to watch things that don't involve spaceships or battles or explosions? Huh. Apparently it was. At least 98% sure it's the first anime that made me cry. If I thought hard enough I might be able to come up with a show that pushed me further into the slice-of-life/bishoujo/visual novel stuff, but nothing so obvious as Full Moon is coming to mind. Perhaps Air, although I'd seen visual novel adaptations before that, such as Toei Kanon and Da Capo. I dunno.

Changing buying habits? Haruhi, no question. The 2k6 episodes got me importing CDs. The 2k9 episodes got me importing DVD/BDs. Pretty much happened all in a rush, because once I decided to buy Haruhi 2k9, I also picked up Spice and Wolf II and Bakemonogatari from the same season, as well as grabbed K-ON! from the season before. I no longer go anywhere near R1s, haven't bought one in a year and a half probably, and won't ever buy one again.

Personally, I'd put a thread about the changing of buying habits in GA for the following reason.

A person can change their viewing habits and buying habits without really having R2 releases involved in it. Or at least I would like to think so.

It would take a while to remember what specific series changed my viewing habits. I suppose I can blame or thank Azumanga Daioh for getting me into 4-Koma in general.

One change that's definitely happened for me is that money that would have in the past been spent on anime gets spent on manga instead.

I guess Azumanga Daioh could be blamed for that as well.
