Le Porn du Food

Posted 01-22-2010 at 11:13 PM by Mr. Nail Bat
I recently found myself in the city known as The Big Easy. There's lots of delicious food to be had in New Orleans, but there is absolutely nothing better than this...

Beignets, from the Cafe Du Monde. Take a dough somewhat similar to the kind you'd use to make buttermilk biscuits. Deep fry it. Cover it with a mound of powdered sugar. Eat it while still hot.

It is GLORIOUS....

Waffo? Waffo!

Posted 12-20-2008 at 12:28 PM by Mr. Nail Bat
Four and a half year ago, the first destination that my brother Arcturus and I traveled to when we visited Europe was the city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Partially because it is an amazingly beautifully preserved medieval walled city, but partially (mostly?) because we wanted to see the city that was the inspiration for the city in the anime A Little Snow Fairy Sugar.

We had a fabulous trip back then, but there was something missing. There were no waffle vendors to be found....

Hot peppers are bad for you

Posted 09-07-2008 at 12:54 AM by Mr. Nail Bat
So on the hot peppers episode of Good Eats, Alton Brown tells the story of how he once put in his contact lenses shortly after having handled jalapeno peppers.

Quote:
"And it sounded something like this..."

(Cut to house exterior. Bloodcurdling scream is heard.)
Well, I've done Alton one better.

So at work one day, a co-worker had a pepper he grew in his garden. It looked like a miniature bell pepper. He offered to cut off a piece...

By popular request... Bacon Cream Pie

Posted 08-10-2008 at 12:00 PM by Mr. Nail Bat
Unfortunately, when I made the pie, I did not take pictures. When I next make it, I will rectify that omission.

Bacon Cream Pie

Candied bacon:
Place strips of bacon on a piece of aluminum foil on a baking sheet. Put around 2 tsp. brown sugar on each strip. Bake at 400 for 12-16 minutes, turning the strips over halfway (be sure to get some of the melted sugar on both sides when turning them over). Let cool on a rack, then chop up into bits.

Pie...

Time for dessert...

Posted 07-28-2008 at 12:16 AM by Mr. Nail Bat
Washington doesn't necessarily have year-round fresh fruit like in California, but when the season is right, the fruit is fantastic.

Right now, raspberries, marionberries, apricots, and cherries are fully in season, with blueberries, blackberries and peaches waiting in the wings.

So for now: behold, homemade apricot cherry cobbler! (Picked the cherries myself, even).

Wait,...
