Posted 10-02-2009 at 08:47 PM by Zeether
There are a lot of games out there that push the consoles they are on almost past their limits, with often fantastic results. The Famicom got one such game, but only in Japan, and as a very limited release as well. Recca was part of the "Summer Carnival" series of games designed for, well, carnivals where players try to compete for the best scores.

And OH MY GOD IT IS FAST.

The instant you hit START it is evident that the scrolling in this game is anything...

If you're a fan of the Bloody Roar series of fighting games you may be familiar with the developer, 8ing. They used to be called Raizing, and they were formed as a result of Toaplan splitting up (the other companies that formed were Cave, Gazelle, and Takumi). Before becoming 8ing, Raizing became known for making several shmups, including the Mahou Daisakusen series and Battle Garegga. One of their lesser-known shmups is a title known as Soukyugurentai (which means Blue Heavens Crimson Lotus Team,...

You know how sometimes when you find a popular music artist you look at their discography to see if something sticks out? Well, I recently had a case of that with one of my favorite game music artists, Manabu Namiki. Turns out Namiki worked on game music for a company called NMK back in the 90's (which I think still exists today but like most Japanese game companies now makes prize machines ). One of the games stuck out for me: A Neo-Geo title called Zed Blade (known as Operation Ragnarok...

Obscure Gaming #2: Galaxian^3

You probably read the title to this and thought "Wait, there's a Galaxian 3? Where's Galaxian 2 then?" Well, Galaxian^3 (or Galaxian Cubed, or Galaxian To The Third Power or whatever you want to call it) is not truly a Galaxian game persay, it's actually part of Namco's "UGSF" (United Galaxy Space Force) timeline along with Star Luster and Starblade among other games.

Admit it, the logo looks...
