Singing the praises of Tyrian

Posted 12-14-2010 at 09:38 PM by Zeether
Today is a good day for old DOS game fans. A true classic among many has now been released on GOG, and it's free.

Tyrian has been open source for a while, but the fact that it's on GOG now means that more classic PC gamers can experience the magic of one of the greatest shmups available for DOS. The colorful graphics coupled with the excellent soundtrack and solid gameplay make this highly...

Blur is awesome.

So today, checking the Steam sales, I noticed Blur was on there for $14.99. I have always wanted to try this game and at that price I figured "hey, why not?"

Totally, totally worth it. As soon as I started I was gleefully taking out other cars with powerups and getting ahead, laughing with joy as I was drawn in by the graphics. So I went back to this Playstation classic for a while, and I decided on a whim to look up the soundtrack...and found this.

Posted 02-15-2010 at 12:07 PM by Zeether
Daytona USA - Yes, it got ported to the Saturn, but was it even good? The initial release was at 25fps and had terrible clipping, and even Championship Circuit Edition ran at a measly 30fps. Not to mention the US CCE doesn't let you use the original physics or music.

Daytona USA 2/Power Edition - Dreamcast port planned then scrapped, WHY? This is a great sequel with slipstreaming and great courses.

SCUD Race/Sega Super GT - Again, DC port planned and scrapped. This...

Toaplan shmups that aren't Zero Wing

Usually the name Toaplan brings about the response "Oh, the guys who did the All Your Base game" or "Didn't they make Zero Wing?" Toaplan made a LOT more than just Zero Wing, and I've covered one of the games before (Slap Fight) in my little column. Here are some other Toaplan made shmups that are NOT Zero Wing.

Truxton/Tatsujin - Genesis/Megadrive fans may be familiar with the port of this very tough shmup. There are three weapons (spread shot, green forward shot...
