Episode 1

This is the first experience I've had with Hunter x Hunter, but I've heard only great things about both the manga and the previous anime, and I love Yu Yu Hakusho in all forms. I really liked this first episode. The setting is interesting enough, the animation is great, and it moves along nice and quickly for its genre.

Episode 1:

- It is going to be very interesting to see how much of this show I end up remembering as I watch. The OP is full of things I only so vaguely remember... but still remember somewhat nonetheless. It's all so hazy.
- We start with Gon trying to catch the lord of the lake, so he can take the Hunter exam. Hunters are... well they're not really explained yet. They're just really skilled people who use their skills in pursuit of doing amazing things - hunting dangerous animals, finding treasure, discovering exotic lands. That kind of thing. His mother doesn't seem to want him to become one though (thus giving him what seems like an impossible task). It's not explained why, but someone does mention that Gon's father was a Hunter.
- So of course this means Gon catches it in the very next scene. Mito-san (oh wait, she's not his mother, right? I totally cannot remember. But seems like not) reluctantly relents.

- Haha, oh jeeze. While most other anime characters have deep trauma about being abandoned by a parent, Gon just thinks its cool as hell that his dad wanted to be a hunter so bad that he left his kid behind. :sd:
- And he's off! Huh, did this happen this quickly in he original? I thought I vaguely remembered there being a lot more drama about him leaving, but now he's walking out 7 minutes in. I don't know if that means my memory is faulty (probably) or they're trying to power through material at a fast pace.
- Basically scene setting stuff. Rough looking thugs talking about how incredibly hard it is to become a licensed Hunter. Then a big storm sickens most of the crew and passengers except for Gon and the two other guys from the OP, to show that they're the real deal.

- Fujiwara Keiji sounds quite good for Leorio. I don't mean "he sounds exactly like the old seiyuu", because I don't remember what the old seiyuu sounded like and honestly don't care - I just mean he sounds right for how Leorio looks and acts right now.
- Sawashiro is Kurapika, and sounds good too, she captures that quiet, seething rage well. Gon's seiyuu sounds... very shounen fighting anime protagonist-y. So it's appropriate.

- After impressing the captain they pass their first hidden test and it's off to the exam site.

That was fun. Animation was definitely nice, here's hoping they can actually keep it up.

But man the screaming in the ED is absolutely obnoxious.

This moved at a much faster piece than the original TV series. I watched it about 6 months ago, and I think that the end of this one was the conclusion of the 3rd episode in the first series. They definitely skipped the episode where Gon met Leorio before they both got on the ship. Since I've seen the first season so recently, I don't mind the abbreviation.

Han Keiko is a bit too old to be voicing Mito-san though IMO. She made Mito-san sound like an old woman.

Mito-san is Gon's aunt (his mother's younger sister).

Yeah, it's been forever since I saw the original series (so I don't remember much what she sounded like there), but the voice still struck me as odd. Interestingly, it seems the new seiyuu of Gon, Han Megumi, is her daughter, so maybe that played a part in that casting choice.

Have to agree. Didn't dwell on it since she's such a minor character from what I remember, but she was totally too old so it sounded kind of silly.

-Kaiju!
-Gon's mom is Elza from Gall Force?
-Or maybe she's miss Matilda from Gundam.
-Gon has gone to become a hunter. What? I had to get the pun out of the way early or it would just fester.
-Nicholas D. Wolfwood stole Vash's glasses. And some porn.
-Captain Avatar is one dramatically crazy old man of the sea.
-AHAHA! Yep the are keeping the creepy clown crotch.

My memories of the first HxH are hazy. All I remember is Gon catching a fish then going to the fun exam then stuff later I liked less... This was fun though. Very basic but perfectly fine. Even if it had a major One Piece vibe going on.

Episode 1

Well having only read the manga, and going off a very hazy memory of the beginning of the series due to all those hiatuses(thanks a lot Togashi), I enjoyed this.

The animation looks great, and while I wasn't expecting so much orchestral music, it works so far, though I imagine the BGM will be more varied as it goes along. The pacing is pretty quick(which seems to be something of a complaint from fans of the original) but I;m pretty sure it'll slow down later on. It looks like the rumors about the changes for the remake were true though, since Kaito really hasn't shown up in episode 1, though it's not a deal breaker. However it doesn't look like Hisoka is going to be as toned down as some were lead to believe.

On note of Hisoka though...I'm really surprised they showed THAT scene in the ED song. You;d figure it would fly on a kid's show these days...

Strangely, that was the scene that got me the most excited. *cough* Because while watching the episode I remembered that happened in the manga and wondered if they were going to keep it once they got to animating that part. Then BLAM! Glorious glowing groin. Heh.
