Crunchyroll (Coming Soon)

Aladdin, the primary protagonist, is traveling a desert land, with a magic flute that summons a djinn named Ugo. The djinn has a huge and muscular body, but cannot remove his head from the flute, giving him a headless appearance and frequently causing even people he is trying to rescue to mistake him for a monster. The two meet Alibaba, a seemingly greedy and aloof young man who is trying to get rich, and realizes that Ugo would be a powerful ally to explore a nearby treasure-filled dungeon. As they adventure together, they become true friends, along with Morgianna, a slave girl from a distant land that they free from her master. The three encounter other djinn and find hints that they may be destined to decide who will rule the world.

As per today's announcement, this show is airing on Crunchyroll on Wednesdays, not Sundays like in Japan. I'm definitely looking forward to watching this. I first heard about this show after seeing some rather unusual cosplayers at a recent con. Then I looked it up, and it seemed like something really special considering how much I absolutely love Disney's animated movie Aladdin.

Episode 1

*looks at voice cast* 0_0 Holy shit.

Anyway, that was a decent first episode.

I find it very, very hard to pretend that Aladdin is a boy. I mean, I know he's supposed to be, but, um, that's a girl. Apparently Aladdin was originally supposed to be a girl but was then changed to a boy at the last minute. It really, really shows.

To whoever made that *brilliant* decision: FUCK YOU.

Episode 1:

- o_O Oh god, Aladdin is Ishihara Kaori. Ahahaha, great, I'm going to expect a "MARU!" in every scene.
- Uhhhhhhh. Aladdin likes manboobs.
- I hope his level of naivete is just being exaggerated for the purposes of allowing Ali Baba to give us exposition. He's a little too clueless.
- Slave girl! I love her already. Nice that we meet her so soon - hope she joins the gang by next episode.
- UGO SMASH.
- More big boobs for Aladdin. I wonder how many thousands of shouta doujins exist for this show.
- And a really nice sequence to end the episode.

Okay, Aladdin may act naive sometimes, but seems like he's actually a very good character judge and is capable of being quite serious when needed. Pretty awesome.

Can't wait for more of the slave girl too.

Aladdin likes the bewbs. And it doesn't matter who has them.
I know he was supposed to a girl at first, but why did they keep the chest bandages? He's a pretty awesome character though.
Please, stoic ass kicking girl, come back soon. I see you in the OP, so you have to come back.

It wasn't a last minute change, it was just the original concept, and of course it got changed, it's a shounen manga, name how many of them have female leads... apart from Medaka Box, none I can think of.

I'll take the Aladdin, Alibaba, Mor (you don't get Mor period if the original concept survived) trio over the Lolidadin + Roidbaba original concept anyday of the week. The Sunday editor was spot on for telling her to gtfo with that concept.

Now female Sinbad otoh....

Manga got a fuckload of revisions.....

The beginning was pretty LOL
That Aladdin sure is one clueless kid.
Alibaba got himself and interesting leech.
Those two together are like a trouble magnet.
It was nice how Alibaba finally found some courage.
Nice first episode. Interesting concept. Has lots of potential.

Re: Episode 1

So it begins where Aladdin is a freeloader who had just met a genie, and Alibaba who gets into trouble when Aladdin is eating a bunch of watermelon. Then things get even more troubling when Aladdin frees the slave Moriganna. Then they transport wine and are attacked by a monster that is weak against wine. Aladdin has a great power with his flute to summon the genie, and his turban as a magic carpet.

I had high expectations for this show, and the first episode delivers. Aladdin comes in as being an oddball who is frequently in chibi form, and one who values friendship more than anything. Then there is Alibaba who is looking for adventure and has been wanting to explore that dungeon, and now he has a companion that can help him tackle that dungeon. Great setup overall, and the next episode should really be something.

Wow, other than the content itself, this is exactly like Blue Exorcist. Aniplex makes a big deal out of it in both Japan and America, having their own studio, A-1 Pictures, adapt the ongoing shounen action manga, giving it top-notch production values, a big band for the OP, an all-star seiyuu cast, and the grand feel that most standard shounen anime doesn't get, then giving it its own website in America and promoting the hell out of it on all venues and acting like it's really the next FMA or something, giving it a "simulcast" that's actually a few days late, on both Crunchyroll and Hulu, free for all viewers at the same time, and I believe it was even the exact same time (I know it was on Wednesdays, at least). And beyond just being an unusually high-profile adaptation of a long-running shounen action manga, the content is actually kind of similar in that neither are the kinds of stories I expect to see in this kinds of manga and anime. Blue Exorcist was The Power of Christ vs. Satan, and this is Aladdin. So far the quality is about the same, so that gives me hope that this will probably be better than I probably would've expected from first glance at the source material.

Re: Episode 1

I've never been fond of the pervert kid (oh, he/she gets to molest people but it's cute cause its a kid). It's also not really realistic (kids are usually asexual unless they've been abused). That combined with slavery being prominent--even if treated as a bad thing--it's not for me and so I'm out.

Backgrounds were pretty though. And yes, Aladdin should have been a girl.
