Monogatari series "second season", Summer 2013

Continuing from the earlier thread here.

Details of the remaining Monogatari series are now out. They'll be aired as part of one two-cour series starting in Summer. Someone posted page counts for the material thus far

Bake: 846 pages, 15 episodes
Nise: 644 pages, 11 episodes
Neko Kuro: 324 pages, 4 episodes

Neko Shiro: 291 pages
Kabuki: 341 pages
Hana: 271 pages
Otori: 283 pages
Oni: 275 pages
Koi: 279 pages

1,740 pages for the second season. The 26 episodes of Bake/Neko covered 1,490 pages, so this should be doable, assuming 1) story density per page is roughly similar and 2) there's at least one or two bonus episodes beyond 26.

Should be pretty awesome, assuming Shaft doesn't fuck up during the two-cour schedule. It's been a long time since they've done two consecutive cour. The last was Negima!? in 2006. They've done some split cour since then, but that's it.

Aniplex you better throw so much goddamned money at them that quality never even starts to become an issue.

I also wonder if they plan to get Kizu out before this, or if it'll come after.

I'm personally hoping the final novel Koi is entirely bonus episodes like Bake and OreNo had... just doesn't sit right with me that Nise 1 gets 7 episodes while the better content in Zen is 3-5 depending on how they split it. If it's 4 episodes each then it's just like Nise 2, the only problem is that Nise 2 was pretty shit and (because of that) had a lot of stuff cut out of it. Anyway hoping for the best...

Not like it matters to anyone who can't watch Kizu in cinemas, even if it came out at the end of Feb we wouldn't see it released on BD/DVD until after Kabuki for sure.... SHAFT have really dropped the ball in regards to this, certain scenes in Nise are better off once you know Kizu, likewise with Neko Black... and the same will apply to certain things from the 6 novels in the second season....

It's just dumb all round.... but whatever at least I get to see Kabuki in August...

It does seem like they're pushing it a little faster than I think they need to. It's only about half the time between Nise and this as between Bake and Nise, and Kizu should have been given a date long ago.

I initially figured we might see a few one-cour seasons (3?) to cover remaining material, spread over a few years. Or Kizu very soon, with BDs hitting around the time a fall season show starts. Perhaps they feel there's a limited window on the franchise to attain maximum sales? But a lower average sales number * 3 seasons and with less episodes per disc if two cour is probably more money than one two-cour series. Well, I guess it's hard to know. At least this way they knock it all out at once, and don't risk interest really trailing off over a couple years, I dunno. Still seems a season or two faster than I would expect.

I'm definitely looking forward to this. Let's see how awesome it will be.

There's also the final 3 novels to be animated, I think only 1 of the "3rd season" has been released so far. Also this being Nisio it's guaranteed to get spinoffs of some type, and considering the popularity of this series a fair chance they get animated too...

Medaka Box had LN spinoffs, 1 for Medaka and 2 for Kumagawa, Katana had 2 spinoff novels, Zaregoto had quite a few

Perhaps it's a matter of not wanting to get too far behind. They could take 7-8 years to animate 5 one-cour seasons, which could end up with Monogatari being past its shelf life, I guess. Knock six of the books out at once before 2013 closes out and they can get to the third season by no later than early-mid 2015.

Sweet. This will be the year of the *monogatari, first with the Neko-Special and now this. My sights are locked onto imports already.
Releasing the theatrical film should be a great finish for the whole thing.

Okay, I'm a lot less worried about this than I was when I first heard that this would probably happen many months. It seemed so incredibly rushed compared to Bake/Nise but then later I remembered that Bake and Nise were 2 books each and this would be reasonable if each of the stories covered here was just one book, as appears to be the case. Still a bit rushed in comparison, so like you, I hope its going a bit over the standard 2-cour episode count, with some bonus episodes to cover the last arc as you suggested.

And then there's this, my other concern when hearing it was 2 cour. Yeah, don't fuck this up Shaft. This is about the best selling show ever, this should not be a fucking problem.

Anyway, a few concerns aside, I'm very happy so see that we'll be getting two full cour of *monogatari in the near future. Goddamn, 2013 is shaping up to be an amazing year. .... And a painful year for my wallet. I'm going to have to make some painful choices this year for imports.

And now I go back to wondering when the hell they're going to fit Prism Nana in. :sd: Has to be Spring '13 now, if it's a TV series. I don't think we'd have as much PV material as we do now if it weren't coming until next Winter. Unless they actually try to animate that and Monogatari 2nd at the same time, ergh.

I had heard something to the effect that no anime is being planned YET and that its all to promote some game (like pinball or something, I forget what exactly). This would explain the bizarre PVs and why the content seems so varied. But I only heard this from one person (on Twitter, don't remember who) and if this was in any way confirmed, I would have expected this to be common knowledge by now.
