Edited Manga List
With the upsurge in censored and edited manga lately, I wanted to try and get a single list together to try and track what series to avoid and which volumes were most affected. Maybe this topic could be pinned?
I've started a preliminary list below based on my memory and a quick scan through this forum. I know there are other titles not listed (like some of the Shonen Jump titles Viz has edited that I haven't paid much attention to) and some titles need more detail. ---- A list of titles that have had confirmed edits made to them for the US release. This list is a work in progress and will be updated with additional information and titles as needed. Companies wishing to remove titles from this list are welcome to release the listed titles (and all of their titles) unedited and uncensored. If you have any additions or additional information on the titles (particularly the ones with question marks for some of the info), please post a response to this message and I'll edit the main post to keep it up to date. Volume numbers listed reflect known edits, it’s possible other volumes or unpublished future volumes not listed below may be edited for any of these entries. Buyer beware. -- Seven Seas Edited Manga Kodomo no Jikan--Nymphet (All volumes) Seven Seas Manga All volumes of this series were canceled just prior to release due to complaints from non-customers. -- Viz Media Edited Manga Battle Angel Alita (All volumes, including Last Order) Viz Media (Action) Artwork edit: Original large book version reportedly changed the order of some of the stories. Story edit: Names of many characters and places changed, resulting in some story alterations. Black Jack (various volumes) Viz Media/Vertical Edits: Three (or possibly five) stories will probably not be published by Viz/Vertical due to issues with Tezuka’s estate (see http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency...d=1341&page=22). The order of stories will also apparently be different than the Japanese releases. Black Lagoon (Volume 1, possibly others) Viz Media Artwork edits: Various brand names were edited and replaced with generic sounding names in volume 1 (and probably in future volumes). Bleach (Volume 14) Viz Media (Shonen Jump) Artwork edit: Vol 14, chapter 116, page 28 Extra smoke has been added to cover Yoruichi's naked body, although the nipples and groin were already covered in the original. Bobobo (All volumes) Viz Media Story edits: Names were changed to reflect names used in the Toei anime dub. Volumes are also being released out of order. Case Closed (All volumes) Viz Media Story edits: The original title (Detective Conan) was changed and many of the main characters were renamed to match the names used in Funimation English dub for the anime. Claymore (Volume 2 and 3 (possibly 4+)) Viz Media (Shonen Jump Advanced) Artwork edits: Small mummy penis was edited from artwork in volumes 2 and 3. Unknown if volumes 4 and up will have any edits. Descendents of Darkness (Volume 4) Viz Media Artwork edits: Removed artwork/sfx depicting a vague male-male oral sex scene. D-Gray Man (Volume 3) Viz Media Artwork edit: Words in original artwork reading in English “Fuck you! Exorcist” was changed to “Thank you! Exorcist?|”. Dr. Slump (Volume 2 and 4) Viz Media Artwork edit: Frontal male child nudity edited out (Vol 2 pg.131). Volume 4 (starting on Page 77) the safari vehicle driver's lips were edited. Also, many scenes with Taro smoking have had the smoke edited out (example: Page 19 of Volume 5, aka the Seven Lucky Gods title page.) Story edits: Alcohol translated as super punch (Vol 2 pg 30). DragonBall (Multiple volumes) Viz Media Artwork changes: Male and female nudity altered in some versions of this series. Some of the small red versions of Dragonball appear to restore the original artwork, but the most recent ones are again edited. DragonBall Z (Volumes Mr. Satan appears in) Viz Media Story Changes: Mr. Satan became Hercules to coincide with the FUNi dub. Flame of Recca (Volume 20) Viz Media Artwork changes: Female nudity was altered in volume 20, despite earlier volumes with nudity being unedited. Future volumes may be edited. Fullmetal Alchemist (Volume 8) Viz Media Artwork edits: Two panels depicting a character that was crucified on a stone cross was edited to make the cross look like a stone slab instead. I’’s (Volumes 1-4, 7-10) Viz Media (Shonen Jump Advanced) Artwork edits: Nipples removed or covered by fog/stars/objects in multiple volumes. Oddly, nipples in volumes 5, 11, 12, and 13 were not edited. Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure (Volume 3) Viz Media Artwork edits: Strong animal violence was edited out of volume 3. Strong human violence unaltered. Viz is also not publishing Jojo’s from the beginning and have skipped long story arcs (no word if these missing chapters will ever be published in English). Knights of the Zodiac (All volumes) Viz Media Story changes: Character names were changed to match anime dub names. Original title was Saint Seiya. MAR (Volume 13) Viz Media Artwork edits: Nipples and nudity covered up in volume 13. Midori Days (Volume 7) Viz Media (Action/Viz Media) Artwork edits: Volume 7 has close-ups of a breast and nipples covered by a redrawn bra on page 130 and two character’s breasts were covered covered/altered to remove/hide nipples on page 187. Other early volumes and volume 8 that contained nudity were unedited. NANA (Various volumes) Viz Media (Shojuo Beat) Artwork edits: Four pages of a flashback sequence detailing the back-story for characters in Blast and how the band got its name were removed from volume 4 (and Shojo Beat printing, although not the exact same pages). Cigarette brand name changed (possible trademark issue) changed from Black Stone to Blast. Naruto (Volume 5 & 10, various volumes, reprinted volume 1+) Viz Media (Shonen Jump) Artwork edits: Middle-finger swear removed from volume 5. Towels added to cover nudity in hot spring scene in vol 10. Various nudity and faint nipples (or suggestion of nipples) obscured, removed, or faded from various volumes (more info to come). In recent chapters, the clan's curse mark on Neji's forehead has been changed to an "~X~" instead of the original manji sign (often confused with the swastika), but this edit was undone for the graphic novel release of volume 12 along with a note explaining that it wasn’t a swastika. Reprinted volumes starting with volume 1 are now having middle fingers removed, possible other edits as well. A character that starts smoking beginning in volume 36 has been edited to remove the smoking. One Piece (All volumes) Viz (Shonen Jump) Story changes: Zoro became Zolo to coincide with the 4Kids dub. Portus (single volume) Viz Artwork edits: One panel featuring a meat cleaver to the head has been mosaiced over to cover up the gore. Viz notes in the backmatter that "[s]ome scenes have been modified from the original Japanese version". Prince of Tennis (Volume 10) Viz Media (Shojo Beat) Artwork edits: Cigarette modified into a toothpick. Read or Die (Volume 4) Viz Media Artwork edits: Nipples were removed from volume 4 of this 4 volume series. They changed Chocolove's name to Joco and reduced his lip size to avoid a darkface stereotype. Ultimate Muscle (Volume ?) Viz Media (Shonen Jump Advanced) Artwork edits: Nudity covered up- bare male butts (pg 11, 65), ripped briefs (pg. 171), female nudity (pg. 57). Male + female nudity covered up. Later printings of the early volumes were also edited to remove swearing and references to condoms. Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (All volumes) Viz Media Story edits: Names are changed to coincide with the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Anime dub. Zatch Bell (Volumes 1+) Viz Media (Action) Artwork edits: All the nudity in Zatch Bell (starting from volume 1, which includes badly drawn shorts added on the main character during a scene with comical nudity, and up) and as well as the visual gag, which depicts Zatch skewered with knives and surgical scalpels, has been edited as well. Story changes: The original Japanese version of the manga was called "Gash Bell." The names of the main characters were either completely Americanized, or shortened into becoming nicknames that are derived from the original Japanese. -- Tokyopop Edited Manga Battle Vixens (All volumes) Tokyopop Art edits: Snakes added to covers to hide certain body parts. Story changes: Dialog heavily rewritten to the point that parts of the story are significantly changed. Initial D (Volumes 2+ and reprinted volume 1) Tokyopop Artwork edits: Many edits to remove nudity, story elements, and jazz up graphics (?). Story edits: Names of characters changed to western ‘nicknames’ and various story elements changed to disguise sexual themes, adult situations, and older/younger character relationships. Original printing of volume 1 was unedited, but later printings edited it to match all the other edited volumes. Faeries Landing (All volumes) Tokyopop Story changes: Names of some characters and places were changed. Dialog heavily rewritten to ‘hip up’ dialog and also changes the nature of the ‘faeries’ and’ Avalon/heaven’ to the point that parts of the story are significantly changed. GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (Volume 1 and various other volumes) Tokyopop Artwork edit: Swastika removed from clothing in vol 1. Story edits: The students in this story are mostly 14 years old and in the third year of Junior High (middle) School (this is roughly equivalent to being High School Freshmen (grade 9) in US schools). In Tokyopop’s version, the student’s ages are--sometimes--changed to be 16 years old and they are described as ‘sophomores’ in high school. This was probably done to make the students seem older to avoid complaints with some of the mature situations they are put into, but it does occasionally mess up the story line due to the inconsistency of their ages and what school/school year they are in. Kami-Kaze (Volume 1) Tokyopop Artwork edits: Sexual acts removed from volume 1 pg. 18. Tokyo Tribes (Volumes 1+) Tokyopop Artwork changes: Various changes made to US edition by the author so that the series could avoid the M label and shrink-wrapping. Alterations marked with obvious “censored” bar. -- Dark Horse Edited Manga Gunsmith Cats (Various volumes) Dark Horse (Studio Proteus) Artwork edits: The original comic book issues had various nudity and sexual situations (including a blow job scene) removed or altered. The large-size first graphic novels had some blood removed between female character’s legs. The new Gunsmith Cats ‘Omnibus’ graphic novels are reportedly unedited. Shadow Star (Volumes 1+) Dark Horse (Studio Proteus) Artwork edits: Nudity and violence removed from multiple volumes. Simple lines that looked too much like a vagina, general nudity, nipples, and mangled bodies were some of the artwork that was edited from various volumes of this series. Cannon God Exaxxion (Volume 4 and 5) Dark Horse (Studio Proteus) Artwork edits: Many changes to artwork in volume 5 to remove nudity and implied sexual acts. Added clothing in volume 4 (possibly only in SMB version) to add panties to female while she ‘serviced’ a male character. Seraphic Feather (Volume 2) Dark Horse Artwork edits: A splash page in Seraphic Feather Vol. 2 was edited to remove pubic hair. -- CMX Edited Manga Devil Does Exist (Volume 1) CMX Artwork edits: A swastika was removed from an armband in volume 1. Shin Chan (Volume 10) CMX There was a visual gag in one of the chapters in the C1 version in which Shin is made to be engaging in fellatio. And the CMX edition removes that chapter completely. In fact, the third chapter got re-titled to "Chapter 2". Tenjo Tenge (All volumes) CMX Artwork, story, and cover edits: Large number of artwork edits made to try to sell adult title to young teenagers. Story and cover edits were similarly made to disguise the adult elements of this title. -- ADV Manga Edited Manga (I know there were some (probably with ‘devil’ in the title), but I can’t recall what they were) By the Sword (Volumes 1 and 2) ADV Manga Artwork Edits: Both volumes had nipples removed and/or drawn over (fog, hair, etc). Vol.1 pg.160 Vol.2 pgs. 2, 14, 46, 103, 111, & 112. -- CPM Manga Edited Manga Geobreeders (Various volumes) CPM Manga Artwork edits: Original release had various edits for nudity. Second release restored some, but not all of the original artwork. Kizuna (Volume 2) CPM (BeBeautiful) Artwork edits: Scene where a young Kai innocently gives Masa a kiss on the lips obscured by a dialogue bubble. Golden Cain (Single Volume?) Fist of the North Star Master Edition (All volumes) Gutsoon Artwork edits: Nipples removed from master edition -- Icarus Publishing Edited Manga Patriot (single volume) Icarus Publishing Artwork edit: One chapter featuring a young male character was not including in this collection of one shot stories. Elements (single volume) Icarus Publishing Artwork edit: The book is missing the four-page story "K's Theory #6" because "[a] certain character is too young." (Specifically, the male character Taiichi appears to be in his tweens.) -- Eros Comics Edited Manga Silky Whip and Silky Whip Extreme (two volumes) Eros Comics Artwork edits: Two pages deleted from one story. Another story was not published in English. -- Vertical Buddha (Volume 7) Vertical Artwork edits: War protest sign changed to protest ‘Iraq War’ (both of which took place after Buddha was originally published) instead of Vietnam War. -- Japanese novel edits Shakugan no Shana novel (Viz Media) Artwork edits: A color page containing a guy in bed with a girl was cropped heavily to hide her lower half and panties. A black and white version of the same colored image was removed completely, along with a nearly-naked shot of the girl The manga of the same title had more nudity and wasn’t edited. Story edits: None reported. Crest of the Stars novels (Tokyopop) Story edits: All Crest of the Stars novels were ‘abridged’ to shorten them into smaller novels. -- ** Corrected manga edits AirGear (Volumes 1 and 2) Del Rey Cover edit: Volume 2 has ‘chap pants’ drawn on top of bare skin to hide a thong, but a black and white version of the picture will be included inside the book. Story edit: The first printing of volume 1 has various story elements and dialog rewritten to tone down sexual situations, notably the off-screen rape of a character. The second printing of vol 1 will reportedly remove the edited dialog. Maision Ikkoku (early volumes) Viz Media Artwork edits: During the first printing of this series (large size volumes) several chapters were skipped detailing Godai’s attempts to get into college and an ice skating story. These chapters were restored in the latest “Editor’s Choice” versions. Mai the Psychic Girl (first issue) Viz Media Artwork edits: A two-page bath scene was originally removed from the first comic issue and later restored for the graphic novel. NANA (Volume 1 in Shoujo Beat magazine) Viz Media (Shojuo Beat) Artwork edits: A nipple edit was done in Shojo Beat Magazine, but it was restored in the GN printing (volume 1). Sword of the Dark Ones (Volume 1, first printing) CMX Artwork edit: Nudity edited from first printing of volume 1. Second printing of volume 1 restored the edited artwork to its original appearance. No reports of edits to volumes 2+. Tsukuyomi Moon Phase (Volume 4) Tokyopop Artwork edit: The first printing of volume 4 has 5 panels with nudity removed (nipples), but scenes involving torture, sexual battery, S&M bondage, and other adult themes were not edited. Fortunately, this volume has now been reprinted without the edits. All other volumes up to volume 11 are reportedly unedited. -- ** Older manga edits (out of print) Guyver (Volume 7) Viz Media Artwork edit: Bra and panties drawn over naked female character after her clothes, bra, and panties were shredded by monster. Later released in uncut (less cut?) versions. Xenon Viz Media Artwork edits: Painted in extra blood on a nude female to obscure her exposed breasts. Shower scene was edited. -- ** UNCONFIRMED EDITS Additional information desired, don’t take these as confirmed edits. Slayer’s Medieval Mayhem - CPM Nudity covered up? Ice Blade - Tokyopop I heard Ice Blade had changes. It was rated M though. (OOP anyway.) What’s Michael? - Darkhorse Various (adult?) content removed such as a character in lingerie edited. This was mentioned in a magazine I have but I have no idea what volume(s). -- Note: I’m not including titles with only cover edits (yet). |
Re: Edited Manga List
First off, the English version of Zatch Bell had underwent a title change, as the original Japanese version of the manga was called "Gash Bell." The change of the title of the series was probably due to the negative meanings of the term "gash" in English, which either means an open cut wound, or a vulgar slang for vaginal opening or vulva. Viz also censored all the nudity in Zatch Bell (starting from volume 1, which includes badly drawn shorts added on the main character during a scene with comical nudity, and up) and as well as the visual gag, which depicts Zatch scewered with knives and surgical scalpels, has been edited as well. The names of the main characters were either completely Americanized, or shortened into becoming nicknames that're derived from the original Japanese names (Tokyopop's Initial D-style).

Re: Edited Manga List
At one time we had a pinned thread to list artwork edits but it got lost at some point. I'm sure this one could replace it, if everyone treats it as a useful resource rather than a thread for bitching.
Jim, I don't have much time right now, but there are plenty missing from the list. I'm sure people can add on, but just a few more to get started: Viz - Descendents of Darkness volume 4 - removed artwork/sfx depicting a vague male-male blowjob scene Viz - Naruto - several nipple edits across several volumes. Early on (volume 1 or 2, I forget this moment) an edit had been restored in a second printing, but since the huge upswing and popularity of the series, many of the chapters in the serialized Jump have been fussed with. Viz - Shaman King - altering the artwork with regards to the tanuki in a couple of chapters. (someone can comment more specifically if they want). Viz - Hikaru no Go - altering artwork to change cigarettes to gum and firecrackers (wtf?), and the dialogue to match. Viz - NANA -- a nipple edit in the Shojo Beat Magazine, but it was restored in the GN printing (volume 1). *This brings up one of the more delicate points, do you want to count things that are edited in the serialized mags but restored in the GNs? ADV - By the Sword - both volumes had nipples removed and/or drawn over (fog, hair, etc) CMX - A swastika was removed from an armband in Devil Does Exist volume 1. |

Ideally, the manga listed should have more information in other threads here. Super-ideally, I'd be able to put up a wiki-type server on Animeprime to track anime and manga edits, but I haven't been able to get anyone to assist with such an undertaking. |

It was left alone however in the July 05 issue of Shojo Beat. And what about a situation like Video Girl Ai where the Japanese don't have access to the original work either? Those types of things can be out of domestic publishers hands. |

VGAi wasn't done only for the US version, so I won't list it here. I'll add the Nana cigaretes, because even if it is a trademark issue, it will affect the story (sort of, since it's now 'blast' directly, instead of being the nickname for the full cig brand) |
Re: Edited Manga List- questions on what counts?
"What's Michael" was edited? Crap, does anyone have more info on this?
|
Re: Edited Manga List
Other edits to Dr. Slump: Volume 4 (starting on Page 77) the safari vehicle driver's lips were edited. Also, many scenes with Taro smoking have had the smoke edited out (example: Page 19 of Volume 5, aka the Seven Lucky Gods title page.)
