What's your setup like?
As I'm in the midst of prepping for a new set, I wanted to get a feel for what folks here are using these days. We're actually going to have three different setups through which to test material in the coming months so there's some flexibility there in checking how things look, but I love to get an idea once again of what people have.

Re: What's your setup like?
My current setup:
PC: Samsung 204B 20" 1600*1200 native resolution. TV: 51cm Panasonic CRT (no idea what the model is, it belongs to my sister). DVD: Pioneer DV-393-s, region-free with DivX 5 support. HD: Not particularly interested in an HD format until the dust settles on the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD battle. I have plans to buy a PlayStation 3 sometime down the track but that is specifically as a gaming machine. I will purchase a separate set-top unit to play HD media. Even then, I'd want to finish collecting my current back titles before I look at buying in HD. I'm planning to buy a television at the end of this year. Since I don't really want to purchase another television for ten years or more, I'm going to plug out money on 1080p HD quality then rather than settle for less and have to buy it later. Currently only Sony and Samsung offer 1080p HD televisions in my area, but since 8 months is a long way off, I'm sure more players will enter the market with them. I'm not too hopeful that the DV-393 will be any good hooked up to a HDTV, so I may go for a DVD player a friend of mine just bought, an Oppo DV-981 with HDMI and HD convert-up capability (I'm actually going to his place tomorrow to see how it looks on his 26" LG LCDTV). Then, after the prices come down on HD disc players and there's a better idea of whether there will be a dominant format, I'll buy a set-top HD player. |
Re: What's your setup like?
I use a 56 inch 1080p Samsung TV with a HDMI to DVI cable to connect my desktop to it at 1920x1080 resolution at 60 hz(1080p)...Ill have to say that watching anime isn't overly gratifying, as I use PowerDVD and pop in a DVD into my computer and play it through my computer and anime doesn't look to great at that high of a resolution....this goes for fansubs as well unless they are of a higher resolution...

Re: What's your setup like?
My current set up:
TV: Mitsubishi WD-65732 (65" DLP 1080p) DVD: Oppo-970 via HDMI Reciever: Pioneer VSX-515 7.1 surround LD: Pioneer CLD-D503 (yes I still watch LDs) Satalite: Direct TV HD-DVR via HDMI Speakers: Sony SS-MS367T 7.1 surround I don't have a high def player yet as like a lot of people I'm waiting for the format war to finish. Though I will probably just get a PS3 next fall anyways. |
Re: What's your setup like?
I have one of the earliest Sony 60" rear projection model...kbr model, i think...still works like a champ and haven't had bulb change yet after 3.5 years...paid good deal back in the day when 1080i was the higest HD available...would like to get newer model but no money now...
bought Samsung DVD-HD950 about 2 years ago...going from HDMI to DVI on the older TV....great 1080i upscaling model and has "code hack" to make it into region free model...only thing i don't like is it's sorta fastforwards like VHS....after you press play, it starts at few seconds ahead where you pressed the play... using Creative DDTS-100 audio decoder with Gigaworks 7.1 speaker set...HOLY MOTHER those speakers kickass...downfiring subwoofer shakes the house at 210 watt...pretty damm nice for the price at only $450 and $120 for the decoder....audio decoder decodes Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES...plus "upscales" the stereo to faux surround... if i wanted to "upgrade" the system, i would definitely want to get full HD at 1080p DVD player and rear projection TV....no LCD since i want to get 60" and 60" LCD costs more than i care to find out... |
Re: What's your setup like?
Current setup:
TV/Monitor: 720p Panasonic ae500 LCD projector on 90inch screen DVD Player: Oppo 971 upconverting player Blu-Ray: PS3 Receiver: can't remember the Yamaha model, but it's a 6.1 system with Sonus Faber Concertinos for all 6 channels with Velodyne sub. I'm definitely interested in hi-def anime (for Blu-Ray). Upgrade Potential: Plan to upgrade to 1080p projector when prices drop a bit more. Also, planning on replacing receiver with one that has HDMI inputs (my current model is couple years old now and only has component in/outs). |
Re: What's your setup like?
Current setup (unfortunately, my setup = bedroom. So no huge TV for me...)
TV: Sony 26" Bravia XBR1 (does 720p) DVD Player: Oppo DV-981HD (Connected via HDMI) Receiver: Pioneer VSX-80TXV Speakers: SVS SBS-01 5.1 set (sound stuff will be bought in the next week or so) So yeah, that's what I said for the polls. I have absolutely no interest in HD anime whatsoever due to my stance on the next gen formats, so I didn't answer the format preference question and chose "no" for the HD anime question. I'm a negative person, I guess. |
Re: What's your setup like?
TV: 53" Panasonic RPTV
DVD: Panasonic RP62 Receiver: Pioneer 49Txi Speakers: 5.1 Onix Rockets with SVS 20-39 PC Plus subwoofer. I also watch anime on: an Archos 604WiFi PMP I use for video/music on the go and a crappy Insignia (Best Buy "house" brand) portable DVD player I use primarily for entertaining my son on long trips. HD: I am interested in HD, but am waiting for the dust to settle before I jump in. I don't have a preference to format at this point. |
Re: What's your setup like?
Here's what I have...
TV: Westinghouse 32" widescreen LCD Resolutions: capable of 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i DVD/Audio: JVC 5.1 HTiB THC-3. 800w total max, DTS, Progressive Scan, component video Hi-Def: currently I have no intentions of upgrading (boo format wars, and my current DVD collection is just fine), but I'm probably swaying towards Blu-Ray. If anything, I'll get an upscaling player before going HD. That said, I am interested in HD anime. I am very happy with this setup, not just for anime but for movies as well. It's in a smaller room (about 11x11 feet), so it's plenty. Were I set up in a larger room, I'd probably want a larger monitor. But for this room, 32" is perfect. |
Re: What's your setup like?
My TV is a 27in RCA that is a hand me down from my mom. She bought it back in 1988 I think. It's one of those big TV's with the wood casing.
My DVD player is a Panasonic that has been modded to play any region and some cheap DVD player my brother gave me that I think he bought at wal mart. My sound system is a RCA sub woofer that my brother gave me. So ya, not exactly top of the line. :D |
