Collections & More for March 2008
Collections for the Month
Agent Aika Complete Collection (Anime Legends) Bandai Entertainment Price: 39.98 Running Time: 210 minutesHow They're Selling it: Agent Aika is back by popular demand! In her search to recover a
mysterious energy artifact Aika encounters a plot for world
domination. Watch as the titular Aika attempts to stop a perverted
scientist and his army of short-skirt wearing women using only her
golden bustier and the ability to transform into a nearly indestructible
bikini-clad superwoman! This sensational and scandalous complete
collection now features all seven original episodes, a previously
unreleased episode of live-action Aika and more up-skirt exploits
than ever before! Witness the quirky, action-packed OVA that
defined “fan service” for generations of anime to come! How We See It: Originally released by Central Park Media way back in 2001, Agent Aika is the original panty fest show. Bandai Entertainment nabbed the new OVAs that are coming out and made the smart move in acquiring the original series to give it a new lease on life. Even better, it comes after the show was remastered in Japan and we get more extras than there were on the original releases. Getting the whole thing in one package at a good price with new material makes this a win/win situation on every count. Panty fans rejoice! See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Aquarion Season 1 Box Set 1 FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 59.98 Running Time: 325 minutesHow They're Selling it: When the Shadow Angels invade after 12,000 years of slumber, humanity is held captive by fear and sheer alien dominance. Eleven years after the Great Catastrophe decimated the world, most of those left alive are scavengers, dirty and starving in the streets.
There is hope, however: Mechanical Angel Aquarion!
Powered by three souls intertwined, a rare breed of pilot takes the controls. Known as Elements, one among them must rise if mankind is to survive. Prophecy is being fulfilled as the end of the world approaches... Through a swirling cloud of love, betrayal, loss and destiny, the last hope for the new century arrives and takes flight!
Contains episodes 1-13 on three discs. How We See It: FUNimation's first major foray into seasonal releases begins with Aquarion wherein we get the first half of the twenty-six episiode series in one box set. For the price of two DVDs you get three and a good chunk of the show as well. With discounts it's certainly not a bad blind buy to check out and support the idea of seasonal sets for new shows if that's what you want to see. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Baki the Grappler Box Set 2 FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 49.98 Running Time: 576 minutesHow They're Selling it: Baki Hanma returns to the Supreme Fighting Circuit to defend his title against a sea of contenders. The quest to find the most supreme grappler in the world moves forward with unimaginable results.
Contains volumes 7-12 (episodes 25-48) How We See It: Coming a year after the release of the first box set, Baki's finally getting some closure for those that got into this over the top fighting series. The second half is a bit different from the first as its very focused on the tournament aspect but the intensity and continual action with manly men beating the snot out of each other has a certain charm to it. Getting six volumes for the price of less than two certainly makes it worth it if you like that sort of thing. Not that there's anything wrong with that. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Black Cat Box Set FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 69.98 Running Time: 600 minutesHow They're Selling it: Sven is your run-of-the-mill sweeper (a.k.a. bounty hunter): down on his luck, haunted by the perpetual grumbling of his stomach and looking to make enough cash just to get by. When a damsel in distress enlists his aid, Sven crosses paths with the worst possible luck: Black Cat (a.k.a. Train Heartnet). At odds now with the branded assassin, Sven seeks to save a young girl before the unlucky Number can carry out his mission.
But fate has brought these three together for a reason, as Sven adopts two stray pupils, the former Chronos eraser Train and the young bio-weapon Eve. As these newfound companions seek out a new way of life, the past proves unwilling to let them go free. Sought by both the Chronos Numbers and the Taoist revolutionary group risen against them, the Apostles of the Star, their happy ending will require more than just luck...
Contains all six volumes (episdes 1-24)! How We See It: Black Cat didn't quite seem to become as popular as some had hoped, especially with a tie-in to the Shonen Jump manga, but the release of the entire series in a collection comes less than a year after the final volume. Not listed as part of FUNimation's Viridian Collection line-up, this set will likely feature the same kind of box we saw with the singles and take up a nice chunk of real estate on your shelf. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Blood+ Collection 1 Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Price: 119.96 Running Time: 600 minutesHow They're Selling it: How We See It: The first half of the Blood+ series gets a collected release with six discs worth of the show that's been airing on Cartoon Network. Early reports indicate that the release is unfortunately dubtitled however which will drive away a segment of the fans. For those who love the dub and have watched it on TV only, it may work out to be a decent deal however. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Blue Gender Box Set (Viridian Collection) FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 49.98 Running Time: 536 minutesHow They're Selling it: Yuji, a high school teenager, discovers that he has a new incurable virus. With life looking very bleak, he's left only one option - hope that the future may hold a cure. With his decision made, he opts to undergo artificial hibernation...
Hunted and on the verge of extinction, Mankind has fled. Now, their only chance for survival is to destroy Blue! Yuji must fight not only for his own survival, but for that of the entire human race!
Contains all 26 episodes plus the Warrior Movie! How We See It: Every few years FUNimation goes back to its classics and hauls it out again in a collection. Blue Gender was the first show they really dabbled with after Dragon Ball Z and showed what they could be capable of. This series now gets a Viridian Collection edition with new packaging as well as including the movie as well which makes it the most complete package for any Blue Gender fan who hasn't ponied up yet. With a very low price for the amount of content, this is also a great set to check out if you like the serious science fiction action show genre and are jonesing for something good. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Boys Be.. Box Set (Thinpak) Nozomi Entertainment Price: 44.98 Running Time: 325 minutesHow They're Selling it: There are two sides to every love story, and Boys Be... reveals what's really going on - from the guy's point of view!
Meet three normal high school guys with just one thing on their minds: girls. Quiet Kyoichi has been friends with Chiharu ever since they were young, but lately, his feelings have begun to change. Lecherous Makoto, a self-proclaimed master of the rules of romance, is ready to sweep the ladies off their feet. And Yoshihiko, a handsome sports nut, is unfortunately a bit clueless in matters of the heart.
Join this hapless trio for a year of romantic misadventures that will change their lives forever!
Includes a 48-page booklet featuring artwork, character bios and commentary from the Japanese cast and staff.
Contains the entire 13-episode series! How We See It: Coming some eighteen months after the final volume of the series, the first formal collection for Boys Be outside of some special bundles that Right Stuf offered has finally hit. It arrives with everything intact from the original releases and in a much smaller footprint due to it being in a thinpak release. This series has long been a favorite of mine because it does the slice of life and budding romance kind of stories so well as it weaves between numerous characters. With the right price and everything intact, it's the best kind of feel good anime that's worth checking out. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Fantastic Children Complete Collection (Anime Legends) Bandai Entertainment Price: 49.98 Running Time: 650 minutesHow They're Selling it: Over the course of many years in many different lands a group of mysterious children called “The Children of Béfort” have been seen time and time again. They spend long months and years traveling from place to place searching for one particular girl.
In the 21st century, a boy named Thoma lives on a small southern island called Papin Island. He meets a girl named Helga who is captured and taken back to the orphanage she ran away from on nearby Chikao Island. But Thoma, together with Helga’s young friend Chitto, devises a plan to free her. However, when they get to Chikao they find that government agents have come to the island searching for an escaped prisoner! How We See It: Ignore the art style. Ignore the weak summaries. Ignore the fact that few people said one word about this series. Just buy it. With so many complaints about the lack of originality, innovation and daring with series out there, Fantastic Children is the kind of show you point to and say, "See? There still are masterpieces out there!" While the release itself isn't spectacular, this Anime Legends edition takes all the weaknesses out of the bi-monthly releases and gives you one beautiful and engaging series in one complete package. Just buy it. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Fullmetal Alchemist Set 4 FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 49.98 Running Time: 315 minutesHow They're Selling it: As the chaos surrounding the quest for the Philosopher's Stone boils over, Edward Elric is left to face his destiny and bear the burdens of his actions alone. Scar, determined to reenact the horrors of the past, must be stopped at all cost. Bust when those who sought to save lives are instead sought as fugitives of the State, the Elric brothers will be forced to flee...
Alliances shirts and factions fracture as undeniable truths glare in the light of day and the rumor of civil war drives unrest. And yet all seek the Philosopher's Stone. Al has been changed into something impossible to comprehend and as the brothers are separated, his suit of armor begins to disintegrate. Ed has precious little time left to find his sibling.
These weary young men have traveled a long and difficult path, seeking to regain what was lost. Enemies have been toppled, friends have been buried and the State will be remade. Even the one inevitable truth will be called into question: The Law of Equivalent Exchange.
Contains episodes 41-51. How We See It: The final quarter of the series hits in the last collection as it wraps up everything that's been asked in the previous forty episodes. If anything's missing here it's the inclusion of the movie to give it a really complete feel, but isn't that what one more collection is for? By this time next year I suspect we'll see a Fullmetal Alchemist Complete Box Set that may or may not include the movie as well. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Collection 2 (Anime Legends Edition) Bandai Entertainment Price: 49.98 Running Time: 625 minutesHow They're Selling it: A fierce three-sided battle begins outside the Mendel colony. While the Archangel takes on the Dominion, the Eternal and Kusanagi attempt to fight off Le Creuset’s ships. In the midst of this chaos, Le Creuset sets Flay adrift in a lifepod, entrusting her with what he claims is the key that will end the war.
The Archangel, Eternal and Kusanagi fight to prevent both sides from using their weapons of annihilation. At the controls of his own new Gundam, Rau Le Creuset enters the fray to ensure that the war builds to a crescendo of devastation. Three lone ships and a handful of people are all that stand between humanity and total destruction. How We See It: The second half of the Gundam Seed series comes out a mere two months after the first one and is a big argument towards waiting for collections and not having to deal with the two year wait that most people went through that collected the singles. As with most Gundam series, the second half is where all the big action and epic moments are and Seed is no exception, though you have to contend with Flay as well. Those who've held out for the collections will be happy to get it at last and without much of a wait between collections. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Moon Phase Box Set FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 69.98 Running Time: 650 minutesHow They're Selling it: While Kouhei ranks among the best in paranormal photography, he's never actually seen a ghost! So when he fails to capture a hauntingly beautiful young girl on camera, he knows there must be an explanation. Driven by curiosity, his spiritual insensitivity proves a curse indeed as the young photographer crosses barriers best left alone, stumbling into the arms of a haughty vampire and a world he cannot comprehend.
The young vampire Hazuki, having waited years for someone to finally set her free, proves unwilling to part with her unwitting hero and follows him home, promptly adopting his life as her own. And as the adolescent vampire wreaks her own flavor of havoc, mysterious forces conspire to reclaim what was lost. Some riddles are best left unsolved...
Contains all six volumes (episodes 1-26)! How We See It: FUNimation gets out another series just under a year from completion of the singles as the accelerated release schedule continues. Moon Phase has quite a lot to offer depending on what kind of mood your in, but with its offbeat humor, dark setting and beautiful gothic girl vampires it's certainly earned its share of fans. This collection is very nicely priced considering how quickly it's coming out and what it offers overall. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Peach Girl Box Set FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 69.98 Running Time: 625 minutesHow They're Selling it: Being the new girl at school is never easy - just ask Momo Adachi. With her golden hair and tan, toned body, you would think she'd have a pretty easy time of it. But when your "best friend" spends most of her day trying to show you up, going after anything you want, you can't be too careful... What will happen if Sae finds out about Momo's long-time crush on a boy named Toji? Will she have to have him as well? And when a lecherous playboy from Momo's past shows a new found interest in her, things get even more confusing.
Contains all 25 episodes! How We See It: While a number of collections from FUNimation are hitting just under a year from the end of the series, Peach Girl strikes about four months after it finished its single volume run which annoyed several folks who bought it that way. That said, this is probably the best way to watch the show simply because of the torment you can undergo in watching the couples swing wildly with their teenage emotions. Against my better judgement, I actually enjoyed this show with its perverse way it tormented the characters and put them through the wringer. You may view your life as being much less complicated and drama filled after watching this decently priced collection. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Ranma 1/2 Season 6 Box Set: Random Rhapsody Viz Media Price: 49.98 Running Time: 600 minutesHow They're Selling it: It's not easy being teenage martial artist Ranma Saotome, but it's even worse when your martial-artist father Genma takes you from home at an early age to go on a decade-long training mission. He doesn't speak a word of Chinese, and yet he insists on bringing you to the cursed training ground known as Jusenkyo, where falling into one of the many springs there instantly turns you into whoever - or whatever - drowned there last. And then, the two of you have this little accident...
From now on, a splash of cold water will turn your father into a giant panda, while you... Well, you turn into a red-haired (and problematically well-built) female version of yourself. Hot water will reverse the effect, but only until the next time. What's a half-guy, half-girl to do? How We See It: If there is a collection worthwhile in repurchasing for those that bought the singles, it's been Ranma 1/2. This season collection takes the eight individually released volumes and puts it on a couple less discs and with some more current authoring techniques. Not that Ranma can exactly look good, but going from eight discs to a thin collection that's easier to watch as well makes it worthwhile. Ranma fans who stuck it out this long are the kind to still put money into the franchise again, right? See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Slayers Season 3 Set FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 39.98 Running Time: 650 minutesHow They're Selling it: In a land far from their own, a band of adventurers stumble into a prophecy and must once again save the world... but at what price? Meet Lina Inverse, a spunky sorceress with a penchant for fire who enjoys nothing more than liberating the unearned from those less deserving. Teamed up with her not-so-heroic group of friends, this seeker of fame and fortune finds herself the unlikely savior of a story long foretold. To defeat the coming darkness, sacrifice will be asked of them all... How does one balance the worth of two worlds, when one must be saved at the cost of the other?
Contains all 26 episodes of Slayers Try! How We See It: The best of the three seasons and the msot watchable, FUNimation's license rescue of the franchise draws to a close with this season set. Less problematic than the first seasons with how Central Park Media had worked them over, it's smooth sailing here as Gourry and Lina and company get into more wacky hijinks while searching for good food to eat. Not for everyone but those with nostalgia will be drawn to this as well as anyone who needs even the mildest of fantasy fixes. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Solty Rei Box Set FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 69.98 Running Time: 650 minutesHow They're Selling it: It's been twelve years since the Blast Fall, an unexplained disaster that left countless dead and many more maimed. Society is divided and every citizen feels the burn, most of all the Resembles - people whose mangled bodies have been rebuilt with high-tech prosthetic devices.
Bounty hunter Roy Revant has seen it all, walking alone in this shattered city. That is, until the day a strange little girl named Solty falls from the sky straight into his heart. The search for family turns into a search for meaning and those that wield harsh power over society won't go unnamed for long. Roy and Solty may seek different things... But who wants to search for truth alone?
Contains all 24 episodes! How We See It: One of the weaker and more chaotic series from Gonzo in the last few years, Solty Rei lets the color blind design the outfits and makes use of all the leftover orange that must have been laying around. While the show has some wonderful science fiction components to work with, they're shuffled to the end of the series after they throw all sorts of bad plot points, ridiculous return to life moments and more at the viewer. Few shows have left me wanting to hurl things at my set like Solty Rei did. But if you like that kind of thing, or you think orange is the new pink, this set is definitely a great deal overall for the entire run. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Speedgrapher Box Set: Director's Cut FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 69.98 Running Time: 600 minutesHow They're Selling it: Tokyo's really let itself go. The poor get poorer, and the rich get their kicks in clandestine pleasure clubs where no desire is too taboo. The decadent criminal underground is the only game in town and life is cheap when paid for in blood money. Burned out ex-war photographer Saiga though his life couldn't get any more dull, selling his soul as a tabloid photographer, trading the rush of bullets whizzing past his head for a quick buck.
p>While on one of these paparazzi assignments, Saiga stumbles directly into the ultimate den of vice, where a goddess is preparing to bestow a dangerous gift upon a willing victim. Running from his enemies and fleeing his own inner demons, Saiga rescues a tragic young girl named Kagura from her own nightmarish life. The girl is full of secrets... secrets possibly hidden even from herself. Smile for the camera... or perish in the glare of its lens.
Contains all 24 episodes! How We See It: Hitting a year after the singles finished and at the same time as the Viridian Collection single volume releases, FUNimation has been surprisingly quiet as to why this is being labeled a director's cut and leaving fans in the lurch as to wondering what it is. While I found the series to be pleasantly twisted and perverse while keeping to a strong dark nature, it's certainly not for everyone and feels like it's trying to be edgy and mature without realizing what that really means at times. With some unusual character designs and a photographer as a lead, it's not the same old show for a good chunk of the time. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie Season 2 Collection (Thinpak) ADV Films Price: 59.98 Running Time: 370 minutesHow They're Selling it: Collecting the second season of the series together in thinpak form, UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie doesn't break much new ground here and instead decides to add more characters to the mix. But half the time that's the point of harem shows so it's not exactly a surprise. This series continues to feel weak and without much merit to it but it does have all the standard things that appeal to those who love harem shows. While it may not be our particular cup of tea, this set brings the entire season in one package for the price of two discs before any discounts. How We See It: We really don't want to see it. For fans of the creator and the first season, this set is a no brainer to pick up though there is some significant loss in the extras department that help to make the show a bit more fun. The series is very much voice actor driven in Japan and the extras tend to reflect that as well as various liner notes. This season is a bit more serious than the first and has a bit more meat to it but in the end it's another chunk of a larger storyline that will likely never see any sort of relationship resolution. If you've been holding out for the cheap collection just to see the show, this set is like getting three discs for the price of two before any discounts. See the original releases here and other related releases. |

Inmu Vol. #2 Kitty Media Price: 19.99 Running Time: 60 minutesHow They're Selling it: ometimes the things we fear most are what we truly want. Enter the world of INMU and come face to face with your darkest fears and your wildest dreams.
First Night

Second Night

His passion brings to life a mysterious being which possesses him. When he becomes one of her patients, the man and the being merge, unleashing a full-on assault on his object of desire.
Third Night

Now he wonders if it was all a dream, or if he's become the victim caught in his stepmother's web. How We See It: Kitty saves yet another Ken Groove title from the hands of NuTech Entertainment by bringing over the two episodes that encompass Inmu 2, of which there are two stories in each episode. The adult horror series certainly has its fans and Kitty plays it right by being able to grab a show for cheap, with a dub already produced, and put it out at a lower price. Add in that it's only a single disc instead of the two in the "box set" we got back in 2002 and it's a good deal all around. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Kite/Mezzo Forte Double Pack (Cut or Uncut) Media Blasters Price: 24.99/29.99 Running Time: 120 minutesHow They're Selling it: This double pack contains both Kite and Mezzo Forte!
Kite

Sawa eventually meets another assassin, a boy named Oburi, and they quickly become friends. They provide each other with emotional support, helping Sawa regain control of her own life. When Sawa's guardians learn of her new friend, revenge is sought and Sawa must fight to break free from the cycle of violence.
Mezzo Forte
Momokichi Momoi is a brutal baseball owner with mob connections. A mysterious old man hires Mikura and the Danger Service Agency to kidnap Momokichi. But the DSA has bigger problems standing in their way, namely Momokichi's daughter Momomi, a young girl with a twisted mind and a loaded gun. Momomi has a reputation as a cold-blooded killer who strikes fear in her adversaries. Now the DSA must find a way to accomplish their mission without getting slaughtered in the process. How We See It: Media Blasters offers up both cut and uncut versions of these two shows in a double pack set that doesn't really save much on space, but is great for the price and nicely timed for coincide with their new Kite: Liberator series. The discs are likely to be the same as the last releases for each of them were, version depending of course, but getting this double pack is like a buy one and get one free offer. Each of these shows are very much worth checking out - in uncut form in our opinion - and the price makes it a steal. If you like rampant violence with lots of sex and sexiness, this title should be calling out to you. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Negima Vol. #3 (Viridian Collection) FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. When a class project incurs the wrath of one of their own, what follows is a virtual, digitally-enhanced popularity contest, no holds barred. How about a little war, world wide web style?
But not everything's fun and games, at least not with finals around the corner and the pint-sized professor at risk! Rounding up the Dummy Force, it's off to Library Island... but not to study?! An underground quest for a legendary cure-all costs the girls more than they bargained for as Negi learns that teaching's not all lesson plans and logic. And when a pre-summer shopping spree becomes a full-fledged reconnaissance mission, the resulting comedy of errors sends the girls into a frenzy and several friendships over the edge!

We Live and Learn
I Hope the Memory of Our Friendship Will Be Eternal How We See It: Other than some slight changes to the packaging, this release is identical to the previous single version but at a lower price. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Negima Vol. #4 (Viridian Collection) FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 19.98 Running Time: 100 minutesHow They're Selling it: It's summer break at Mahora Academy, but things are far from quiet. And while vacation means a break from the classroom, hassle and hilarity fill the class agenda. After all, Professor Negi Springfield's still on duty!
Contains episodes 15-18:
A Reliable Friend is Perceived in an Uncertain Situation

Origin: The Movie Special Edition FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. Price: 39.98 Running Time: 150 minutesHow They're Selling it: Ages past, the Forest was awakened and the Moon unleashed a ravenous Beast upon the Earth. Man cowered in fear...
Three hundred years later, the landscape of the world has been drastically rewritten. The remnants of humanity are divided as never before. Half seek a tenuous coexistence with the Forest, half seek to dominate and subdue that which they cannot understand.
Agito, the son of an aged hero, inadvertently sets in motion the destruction of all that is left when he revives the young Toola from her timeless slumber. Unable to reconcile life as she once knew it from the world as it is now, Toola calls forth ancient technology to reshape the future from the ashes of the past. With the blessing of the Forest, Agito must first save the girl from herself in order to rescue them all. How We See It: Getting a Special Edition release a year after it was originally out, there's actually a lot to look forward to with this. While they've bumped the price up by a whopping ten bucks, there's a good deal of extra content here for the movie making junkie to fall in love with. Where the uncertainty lies is whether they've re-authored this or not with their newer equipment and policies that could give this a much better look and feel. There are few movies worth double dipping on and this one has a few marks against it but could be worth it in the long run. At least until there's a Blu-ray release. Now that I'd pay $40 for! See the original releases here and other related releases. |
Speed Grapher Vol. #3 (Viridian Collection) FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. One transaction complete, Suitengu pursues another, testing the boundaries of twisted love and seeking to consolidate his kingdom at last. Eyes closed, Saiga and Kagura reach across captivity, both trapped and dreaming of freedom.
Contains Episodes 9-12:
Into the Bath
Suitengu Cometh
Mother Critical
Left Hand Lullaby How We See It: Other than some slight changes to the packaging, this release is identical to the previous single version but at a lower price. See the original releases here and other related releases. |
