I tried listening to some of her songs, from I believe her latest album, and just didn't click for me.
If I had to name someone that I like in Japanese that does songs outside of anime, it would be Maaya Sakamoto.
I'm not a huge pop person, outside of anime songs.
As far as US artists in general, my tastes vary and I like too many to list them all.
However I'll just list off some off the top of my head:
Evanescence
Flyleaf
Within Temptation
BoA (of Serial Experients Lain fame, no the Korean singer)
Vienna Teng
Pink Floyd
Men Without Hats
What a varied list that turned out to be.
