Well honestly 95% of what I watch, read or play I don't give a repeat experience, so while price is certainly a factor I would think checking out the original source (which will be different in some manner) is another big factor.
For example I watched Angels and Demons (or whatever its called) at the cinema and did I buy the dvd? Nope instead I bought the novels so I could get an original version of it as well as a fresh experience.
Also another factor imo would be material going past where the anime ends. Why wait and hope (sometimes to no avail) for a second season of Seitokai when I can just go buy the manga volumes for 3 & 4 and than start following Magazine. If a sequel comes out which would cover vol 3 and 4 I could be up to vol 8 by the time it even airs.
