Hm, interesting. So in the original, do they use a word that unambiguously means sales to customers, or could it be a shipped to retailers number? Certainly for a smash hit movie like this, I expect a long tail of sales and for "real" sales to be significantly higher numbers than what we can get from Oricon's incompletely coverage. But that's a pretty big increase. Though not bigger than other distributor-claimed vs Oricon reported sales for big titles.
Oricon lists the following:
DVD LE: *29,893 (2011 1st half DVD Top 50)
DVD RE: **1,238 (1 week of sales)
BD LE: 101,704 (2011 1st half BD Top 50)
BR RE: **2,030 (1 week of sales)
Total: 134,910 as of June 2011.
Taking Kadokawa at straight 200,000, that's a 65,090 gap. Obviously we're stuck still using Oricon for comparing releases, just like how I don't triple Nodame Cantabile's sales because the noitaminA guy said it sold three times what was reported. I mean, there are those news reports from back in the day about Haruhi 2k6 v1 selling (shipping?) 90,000. Not going to put 90k in my spreadsheet though, heh.
But it'll be interesting to see what the Oricon full year Top 500 says. I doubt Shoushitsu goes over about 140k in that, since it probably dropped outside the range Oricon tracks by now.
Thanks for the info.

Here's the relevant information about sales from the book:

I've ran the kanji through translators and likely have quintuple-checked it due to that big difference, but it says "sold" and not "shipped." I've looked back at the unofficial reports that said Kadokawa planned to ship 180,000 copies of the LE BD, LE DVD, and RE DVD.
Source. That would match up to selling all of the original production and likely selling more of the BD versions. They're still in stock and even KyoAni's added them back to their online store (along with the BD-Box).
