Yeah, it's not really the concept, more the way the animators chose to illustrate it. From our perspective, he just starts typing away frantically at the keys without any sort of interface, menu, or even visibility of what he's typing, and then the weird Matrix display appears with the progress bar. Whatever he was really doing was probably shown on his NerveGear display and probably wasn't all that complicated. They just made it look funny. I have no idea how it was explained in the books, but this seems like a sort of creative license "to make it look cool". (The problem is your audience is full of geeks...
)
