That, and the plot is just so unimaginatively similar to Strike Witches ( No surprise I guess ), only this time the girls learn how to use their 'powers' right off the bat whereas in SW they actually trained. It just seems so pretentious to me, but obviously Japan loves it and that's all that matters.

You lack the proper references to really get why Vividred is popular.
Also, its plot is not really very similar to Strike Witches at all. Strike Witches did not invent "unknown alien monster things invade", and the rest of Vividred's setup is far closer to say Mazinger Z than it is Strike Witches.
Also, pretentious does not mean what you seem to think it means.
