As for school setting, it is always the setting to go for LNs, shounen manga and shoujo manga as well as VNs/games and anime is no exception. It is extremely popular and I doubt this will change much in future.

Actually the docking part is not predictable for me... Quite a shock to see a character who looks like a grown-up Aoi emerging from "Vivid Blue Operation". However, take the fusion/union bit away, this transformation into a grown-up character is yet another element stolen from the usual mahou-shoujo fares - not PreCure this time but a tradition that went even older to Creamy Mami and beyond.
The funny thing is to see how fans in Japan use combination and permutation mathematics to calculate how many types of "docking" (further differentiated by who kisses whom and thus who is the dominant character after the docking) there can be. One example I saw in 2ch:
赤：r 青：b 緑：g 黄色：y
(rb) (rg) (ry) (br) (bg) … (yg) でまず12通り。
((rb)y) ((rb)g) ((rg)b) ((rg)y) … ((yg)b)
(y(rb)) (g(rb)) (b(rg)) (y(rg)) … (b(yg)) の48通り。
((rb)(gy)) ((rb)(gy)) ((rg)(by)) …
(((rb)g)y) ((ry でカタラン数やらなんやかんやで
全部で1*12+2*24+5*24 = 180通り考えられる。
(ただしnPk=n!/(n-k)! (n>=k), C(n)=(2n)!/(n!(n+1)!))
Well, I would say that in this show you may find yourself using your brain more than in other anime shows! :-)
