Although I'm not sure I'll be participating with any Mii travel, as I've decided to turn off WiiConnect24 when I turn off the Wii.

Same for me on both points.
I registered my computer email account to my Wii and replied to the message the Wii send to my email from my computer. I noticed the Wii disc drive glowed blue until I checked the reply on my Wii.
Also, if anyone is curious, the way they did it was through email. Wii email is w(insert friend code number)@wii.com. The good thing is you don't have to worry about spam. No one can send your Wii messages unless you register their Wii number or email address (for non-Wii email) on your Wii.

So I am confused here, if you decide not to keep your console on stand-by, the messages won't be sent to you?
As for the e-mail, I can use regular e-mail to send messages to the account but I won't be able to check my messages except for on my Wii?

They should still get to you, even if the console is off.
