I wanted to restart this thread so I could organize a lot of the information we've compiled in the past 8 months or so, and have dedicated places for it going forward. I ask that the old thread just be left to fall off the listings rather than be locked, because once a thread is locked posts can no longer be opened in edit/reply view, which makes copy/pasting anything with complicated VBB formatting impossible.

The purpose of this thread is to report on the weekly Oricon DVD and Blu-Ray sales data for anime home video releases, as well as the occasional related content (Vocaloid concerts, anime music video compilations, etc). Various other articles that shed some light on buying trends or the release models will also be posted. I'm interested in having the numbers because it's easy to say "X is super successful" or "Y probably sold poorly", but harder to back it up without concrete data and just as importantly, the sales of other shows as a comparison.

The first weekly data posted here will be the final DVD/BD Full List for 12/20-12/26 2010. This data should be available very early in 2011, or thereabouts. While we keep each week in its own subthread, I also want to link to each week's information in a single post for easy access.

Sales information release schedule:
The sales reporting period for Oricon is one week, beginning Monday and ending Sunday.

Daily Top 20-30 DVDs, no numbers: Every day during release week (e.g., 1/03-1/09). Usually contains only a few anime, generally not posted on. Top 20 available on Oricon's public website though Top 30s sometimes go around from other sources. Note these lists are strictly for the day in question, and are not cumulative. They are tallied up to provide the weekly list.

Weekly Anime-only Top 30 DVDs, All-genre Top 20 BDs, with numbers: Each Tuesday after the release week in question (e.g. 1/11 for a 1/03-1/09 week) a preliminary DVD/BD list containing only the top 30 anime DVDs and top 20 BDs of any type is released. There will always be 30 anime releases in the DVD list (minus non-anime animation like Disney) and at least 10 anime releases in the BD list.

Weekly Top 1 BD ±500: On Tuesday or Wednesday after release week (e.g. 1/11 or 1/12 for 1/03-1/09 week) Oricon sends out a press release on the top selling BD of the week, rounded to the nearest thousand. If it's anime, you'll probably hear about it. This is mostly irrelevant however with the Tuesday releases already including this information and much more.

Weekly Top 100 DVD/Top 50 BD with numbers: Thursday after release week (e.g. 1/14) usually brings the full list for that week. These are the sources for the "Full / Translated" updates. Often posted before noon EST on Thursday, sometimes it doesn't get out until later in the day or even Friday. Generally the DVD 100 adds few or no new entries beyond the Anime DVD 30 on Tuesday, but the BD 50 can often add a considerable amount of information to the BD list.

Any of these will only be reported here if there's anime in the list, as this thread only concerns anime.

I had been updating the old list sporadically but thought it better to update the format and get it current. I added ONAs this time (for Hetalia and Haruhi-chan) and took out two series that upon further inspection actually started airing in 1999 (Ryvius, Initial D 2nd). Not because I don't want to go earlier than 2000 but because data seems less complete back then. And 2000 is a nice round number!

2011 looks set to start with 2 in Winter (Madoka, IS) so we'll see if it can get another 2-3 each remaining season and keep up around the 10 mark. For spring, Nichijou, Hanasaku, Steins;Gate and Denpa Onna, perhaps?

I've always found this amusing because so many people say "the industry is dying" blahblah but when you actually go through the years, you see that there are more and more anime selling extremely well. The only difference is that the gap between things that do sale and things that don't is getting bigger, which should just push the industry to come up with better ideas and more interesting properties, and it seems like they're headed in that direction.

As for this season, I'd put Ao no Exorcist and Gintama as definites to sale over 10,000 in that list. For dark horse hits, I'd put my money on Dog Days, Hidan no Aria, A Channel, and Ano Hana. Actually, this season has a lot of potential to have multiple +10,000 hitters, but that's to be expected with over 40 shows being produced.

In terms of the best sellers getting higher, yes. In terms of the low sellers getting lower, if that's what you meant, this actually isn't the case. I looked into this a couple months ago, and while it's the common perception, the data suggests things are pretty consistent. [Side note: looking at that post reminded me I left Queen's Blade out of the list by accident! Will fix.]

I checked 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009. The mean and median sales numbers are very similar in all four periods. The percentage of shows selling 3-9k was also consistent, between 21 and 27% of shows except for 2005 which saw only 16%.

From 2003 to 2007, roughly 1/3rd of non-children's anime did not rank each time. In 2009, only 5% did not rank - because we had better reporting thanks to the lower thresholds of the BD rankings.

So just as many shows sold badly earlier in the decade as now, it's just that they didn't get reported. If you knocked out all 2009 shows with an average of 1k and below (general threshold in the DVD-only years), not ranking would be closer to 25%, which is pretty similar. Or slightly better.

But this is all moot if all you meant is that the big sellers get bigger while the average show stays in the same ballpark. That's totally true and I agree.

Ah yes, Gintama of course. It's consistently done over 10k so that's probably a given.

I'd be happy if A-Channel manages around the 5,000 range. Not that 5,000 is super amazing or anything, but it's far better than doing around say 1,000. Also, I'm trying to be half-realistic.

Perhaps, but I have to wonder about that. On one hand, more choices means more chances for people to find series they feel are worth supporting by purchasing.

On the other hand, there's the idea of the following. If a person can only afford say four series a season then going from say sixteen shows to twenty shows would just mean the following. Instead of skipping twelve shows, the person is skipping sixteen shows.

I'd be happy if A-Channel manages around the 5,000 range.

Normally I'd say the same, although A1 is developing a good following so that should boost its sales. They've got four shows over 10k (tied for 5th most) and all from different franchises. So I dunno if it'll top 10k but it's more likely than it would be from a lot of studios.

Yeah, that's true. If you air 10 shows or 100 shows in a season, the number I can afford is pretty much the same. I'm doing four imports this season, which is higher than my usual three, but I don't think I could do much more than that. Five max. Or well, I say that now... we'll see what happens. I used to think three per season would be my max.

But I suppose the argument would be that more shows = more chances to tickle the fancy of a fan out there who might not have otherwise bought anything this season. I suppose there's got to be a nice point of equilibrium between number and variety of shows in a season and number of anime-buying otaku. Whether these 47 (less if you remove children's shows of course) strike that balance, I have no idea...
