So this show begins with a history lesson about the invaders called BETA, and then life at the academy leading up to the battle in Kyoto. Yui is sure the clumsy one, but she is being counted on. It pretty much fast-forwards through their years at the academy where the girls were training in those skin-colored suits. Then months later, it's time to fight, and the girls are in the black suits seeing actual combat for the first time flying their TSFs.
The first episode was pretty nice, as it could have been a huge info dump episode, but this episode pretty much had only what is really needed. I certainly like what I saw this episode and will continue to watch more of it.

Love the "retro" 1967 mech.
So we get the protagonist, a rival and all sorts of likely [s]cannon fodder[/s] friends to help fill out the requisite mech show staples. Ah well, they were neat to look at, which is about all they really brought to the table for the most part I guess. Not that Takamura brought a lot in the limited space either. ![]() Nice to see that at least the military has some sense of decency and provides the girls with coats to go over the tight/semi transparent suits- which make no sense that the metal underwear thing shows throw yet nipples don't but ah well, character design logic. Did like the plane like tail fins on the legs of some mech, that is an interesting aviation touch. Do question the idea of moving tanks into make a new defense line rather than opening both sides of the highway for escapes- we saw shells bouncing off the head of some BETAs- unless there is some weaker type that the military is hoping to hit aren't they just needlessly adding to the death toll? Big time heavy open, I wonder exactly where they hope to go from here.

Well, this group of girls seems pretty fun. So next time we'll get to "enjoy" seeing most of them get brutally butchered.
My first thought upon seeing the group having fun together was to wonder how many of them would survive this initial two-parter and I figured the answer was "one or two". I was figuring all of them except Yui and Yamashiro would get killed off. By the end of the episode, I realized that as far as I could tell, those two names were the only ones that were even said (and maybe the one who had the boyfriend and I just missed it). That seems rather telling. Then I wanted to see who Yamashiro's seiyuu was, and I don't see that name on the ANN cast list. So unless the people releasing the seiyuu info are being clever about things (see Ga-Rei Zero), it doesn't look like she's going to be joining Yui in future fights.

The episode wasn't too bad. A bit expository, but that's too be expected when there's some backstory to cover, and I haven't seen a good reason for the tight piloting suits, yet (and don't expect to see one given that this is anime ^^; ). I did like that they were given the coats to wear over their suits while in 'stand-by', too.

I half expected that. I was thinking "So how many will survive this episode?", then I immediately remembered that this was a Part 1 of a (presumably) 2 part intro arc, which gave them a much better chance of surviving past this episode. I figured there was a 50/50 chance of at least one of them dying in this episode versus saving all the carnage for next time.

I liked the explanation intro part.
It helped a lot with the rest of the episode. Watching Yui & her friends in everyday life was nice. It was pretty cool how those mechas have giant katanas ^^ Invasion at their doorstep...how will they handle it? Yui had some nice thoughts near the end of episode. Will be probably watching this one for the mecha & aliens part.

Yamashiro's voice sounded familiar which was part of why I wanted to know (in addition to just her seemingly being a major character). But this seems to mean that her seiyuu info was not revealed until the episode actually aired, rather than as part of the pre-release cast list reveal, which suggests she's a minor character.

Oh its going to be so weird hearing Nakahara Mai in both this and Jinrui.
Anyway, good start, the explanations mostly made sense, though I'm already quite familiar with Muv-Luv, so that helps. I guess we get to see everyone but Yui slaughtered next time.
