Default BookScan Top 10: 10/9 & 10/16 | Diamond Top 10: September

Source: ICv2 | Love Manga | Diamond

October 9th
1. Fullmetal Alchemist #3 (VIZ)
2. Negima! #7 (Del Rey)
3. Ruroni Kenshin #19 (VIZ)
4. Bleach #9 (VIZ)
5. Naruto #1 (VIZ)
6. Naruto #7 (VIZ)
7. Naruto #2 (VIZ)
8. D.N Angel #9 (TOKYOPOP)
9. One Piece #8 (VIZ)
10. Dragonball Z #22 (VIZ)

October 16th
1. Fullmetal Alchemist #3 (VIZ)
2. Ruroni Kenshin #19 (VIZ)
3. Kingdom Hearts #1 (TOKYOPOP)
4. Death Note #1 (VIZ)
5. Naruto #1 (VIZ)
6. Bleach #9 (VIZ)
7. Naruto #2 (VIZ)
8. Naruto #7 (VIZ)
9. Negima! #7 (Del Rey)
10. Naruto #3 (VIZ)

Two more Top 10 lists, two more that are dominated by VIZ and Naruto, with volume 1 continuing to outsell the latest volume meaning more and more new readers are coming aboard. Very glad to see Death Note placing in the list this past week and I'm pretty shocked that Kingdom Hearts place so high.

Diamond Top 10 - September (Manga Only)
Note: This are for books that are solicited through Diamond only to comic books shops.
1. SAMURAI EXECUTIONER VOL 5 (Dark Horse)
2. HELLSING VOL 7 (Dark Horse)
[3. Lady Snowblood Vol 1 (Dark Horse) ]
3. RUROUNI KENSHIN VOL 19 (VIZ)
4. NEGIMA VOL 7 (Del Rey)
5. MONKEY KING VOL 1 (Dark Horse)
6. KINGDOM HEARTS VOL 1 (TOKYOPOP)
7. DEVIL MAY CRY 3 (TOKYOPOP)
8. YOTSUBA MANGA VOL 3 (ADV)
9. DEARS VOL 4 (TOKYOPOP)
10. ONE PIECE VOL 8 (VIZ)

More variety with Diamond. There is an error with the list here, as Lady Snowblood #1 placed above Kenshin on the list with 3227 units sold.

That actually made the USA Top 150 list for that week too, placing at #95.

Didn't you read the review? Heh. It'll place high because of the name recognition and existing fanbase for certain. I pimped/displayed it (and also Devil May Cry 3) at the bookstore and all the copies flew off the shelf. Some day someone will believe me that even gamers will buy manga about games they love. Here's hoping for a reprint of vol 1 of KH with color pages.

(can't hurt to hope..)

Default Manga numbers only

Just to note (in case others are wondering, it's pretty obvious but I went to check) - the Diamond chart is for manga titles only, excluding other comics. On the Diamond numbers given at ICv2, the first manga title is #6.

Probably the bookscan numbers are manga-only too, but manga sells more at bookshops so it doesn't make as much difference.

Anyway I'm not saying it was misleading or anything, I just wanted to clarify.

Yes, I used the manga only chart from Diamond, but if you read the bottom of the ICV2 article, you'll see that manga dominates the GN best-sellers for BookScan.

Manga continued its domination of the list of graphic novels sold in bookstores, taking 24 out of the first 25 places and 47 out of the top 50. Two Simpsons titles (at #21 and #35) and DC's Identity Crisis (at #30) were the only non-manga volumes in the top 50.

The bookscan numbers include all graphic novels-- it's just rare that an American book cracks the top 10 (or even top 50!). Since Episode 3 and Sin City dropped off the charts over the summer, I don't think a American comic has been in the top 20. Manga consistently makes up 45-48 of the top 50.

Woo, I am soooo happy to see Yotsuba in the top 10.

But, wait a second, what happened to all the stuff I always heard about shoujo manga doing so well in the US? Isn't that like... ALL shounen? (I have no idea what Lady Snowblood is).

Or is it just that some big shounen franchises monopolize the very top, but the rest of the top 50 has lots of moderately to great performing shoujo manga?

Female manga buyers won't be buying from comic shops on average so you can ignore the Diamond list, but as for the others... I don't know, maybe you're right. Rurouni Kenshin probably sells a lot to females though? And even if shoujo manga is sucessful, it can't be expected to do better than popular TV series which represent a large proportion of those lists.

Don't say that girls don't shop at comic stores! That's like saying boys don't go to the mall. Actually in months when hit shoujo like Fruits Basket are released, they not only make the top of the Diamond manga list but have cracked the top 10 of all graphic novels sold in comic stores. I think a better measure would be to see what shoujo were released in this month and what week they were released; new series aren't going to do as well as DNAngel and FruBa. While we certainly sell a lot of Hellsing, Naruto, Battle Royale, and Kenshin, we order just as many Fruits Basket as any of those titles.
