Default [US DVD] Dragonout Complete Series Part 1

left align imageReview by Chris Beveridge

Mania Grade: C+

In Summary:

Because of the back and forth nature of it, with Gio and Jin forming an uneasy bond in order to protect Toa and spending much of their time simply chasing after her, Dragonaut has a less than clear focus at times. There’s a lot going on here with multiple Earth created dragons and the various organizations and those within it, but the main story about Thanatos and what it may be doing is given very little time overall. We get more out of the flashback zones than anything else when it comes to the really good story concept and building blocks. What we do get in the main show is a lot of action, a lot of scantily clad varied characters running around and a fair bit of angst. Dragonaut reminded me heavily of Gravion in a number of ways, which means this may play out better the second time around than the first, especially when we have the whole thing in hand.

Haven't seen this myself, but C+ sounds pretty good for a show everyone seems to hold up as the worst show created this decade.

The Gravion comparisons are intriguing; which have me leaning towards a purchase. But most likely I will rent this first to see if it's for me.

Ghost Hound = D and Dragonout = C+ ? One of these things is very wrong or both. But in all seriousness I expected Dragonout to get trashed. C+ is a good grade considering the source material.

Well, I still away from this for sure... I still a little curious to see how bad it is...

So far I've only seen a few episodes and I can't say that I disagre with the review. I do have to say that Ghost Hound is a far, far better show than this.

I don't think they even need to be compared. I'm not benchmarking shows against each other for the most part and I do actively try to avoid making direct comparisons to other shows. It's a rare review where I even mention another series, like this one mentioning Gravion.

Can I be sarcastic and say at least this show has boobies?

Just kidding.

If you want a comparison, I'll be concise and say that Ghost Hound simply bored me and then made me laugh when it should have been serious. Dragonaut isn't trying to be serious, and it lacks a strong narrative, but it strikes me as a lot of normal Gonzo fare from their lower mid range kind of titles like Gravion. And I have gone and re-reviewed Gravion/Zwei as a whole in comparison to when I did it as singles and did find it more entertaining.

Yeah, I only mentioned Ghost Hound because bluesilo brought it up. I don't see Dragonaut being lumped together with GH at all really. It's more a fan service piece like Gravion or Divergence Eve, which focuses on breasticles. Sometimes mindless anime can be fun, but man alive, Gonzo can do sooo much better!

This is the kind of show that I have to watch when the wife's not around, and it's not even hentai!

Well, c+ isn't exactly a glowing review. I imagine alot of people might argue it rates lower though :p

Regardless of what I might say about the show, I'm still buying it, for whatever reason. Perhaps a glutton for punishment?

Only saw the first episode via Funimation's digital offerings, and if that was a measure then I think C or C+ for this series sounds about right. I'm not sure why people are hating on this so much.... It's not great by any means, but I did not find anything "bad".

Does it get a lot worse or something?

I agree with Chris saying this is Gonzo-fare, that's how I saw it as well (with my limited exposure of 1 episode course).

Boobies in any show gets a half-grade bump from me. Which explains the "+" attached to the C for this review I assume
