OK, this will seem like complete overkill.
However, I listen to and enjoy a lot of different types of J-Pop, and when I saw your request, I did a quick survey of my collection and tried to pick samples of all these different types.I did not include songs by seiyuu, and for the most part, I avoided including Anime OP/ED songs, since you probably would have heard them already. In some cases though I had to make an exception, because of a lack of other good songs by an artist on YouTube. These are all artists and songs I listen to (and I own CDs/DVD for all of them). There are a bunch of older songs in the list. I included them, because I think they are still good, and they might be new for you. The order may seem a bit haphazard, but I use the same type of ordering in my iPod playlist - I try and mix up the various types so I don't get two similar songs in a row, and I think that might also enhance listening to new songs as well. If you go down the list and just listen to the first example from each artist, you will see what I mean. The only exception being that I tried to keep solo acts next to their original groups. There are some excellent songs (IMO) in the list, and I think the rest are pretty good (there aren't any that I don't like on it anyway), but obviously YMMV. ![]() In addition to the video samples, I also included links to each artist's listings at CDJapan, in case you (or someone else reading the post) find(s) something that you(he/she) like(s).

I think we all know who to go to with our J-pop questions now.

Ha, thanks. I actually had a lot of fun making it. I already knew what artists/songs I wanted to include, so it was just a matter of finding them on YouTube, and there were some pleasant surprises.
I was very happy to find a subtitled version of BUMP OF CHICKEN's "K" because being able to understand the story makes a big difference. Also, I was excited to find videos that show just how much THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT's music just completely kicks a--. I have to admit to being influenced by the appearance of some of the female artists and the videos show how cute or hot they can be. Some of the videos are just plain fun as well. Your link to the Oricon charts is very helpful, but I wanted to make sure that some really good acts that aren't necessarily high on those charts weren't left out. Not that my list doesn't also include a lot of the most popular acts as well. The only thing is that the list is rather long, and I hope people who are interested make it through to the bottom half, so they don't miss out on acts like bird or GO!GO!7188. While going through YouTube, I also came across some official Japanese record company channels which are pretty good for checking on the latest releases: Universal Music Japan Avex Network For Life Music Entertainment There are probably more that I missed though. |

I think it would have been easier to just link to the CD Japan and youtube homepages.
![]() Well, at least Smashingblue will think twice now before asking for music recommendations in here. ![]() Oh yeah, thanks for typo correction guys.

Well, this may seem excessive, but as the saying goes with things like this: "too much is never enough."
![]() While listening to my iPod this past week, I kept hearing good songs from artists that I did not include on the previous list, and it was bugging me, so I took a couple of hours to survey my collection again and find the corresponding videos on YouTube to put together this addendum. Since I still had the short little perl script that I wrote to format the previous post (I just feed it the artists' names and the associated urls via standard out, and it outputs the format you see below), it wasn't a big deal at all. I actually also added a few more videos to the previous list as well (one more for Ayumi Hamasaki, five more for Dragon Ash, and four more for Globe). This should be it for a while, at least until I get through some more of the new CDs I picked up on my trip, anyway. ![]() Oh, I also found another Japanese Record Company channel: Columbia Music Japan.

I feel obligated to go through more of these songs now, seeing as how detailed the inputs have been thus far.
Slow down on all these recommendations! jkI'll give another update on what I've listed to and liked in another day or so. This thread has turned out to be an exceptional resource for newcomers to J-pop. |
