4,879 did sound pretty high until I checked and noticed the MSRP was only ¥15000 (no tax). It's obviously not bad either but a lot of BD boxes charge twice that for a cour.
But FLCL is only 6 episodes?
But compared to the previous JP releases of the series it was cheaper. Also taking in to account the cost of what the average 2 episode JP release anime blu-ray goes for these days I thought it was a bargain.

Original DVD release: Vol.1 2,700 Yen, Vol.2-6 3,700 Yen each
total: 21,200 Yen + Factor in shipping costs for each volume as they were released
DVD-Boxset: 19,000 Yen
Blu-ray: 15,000 Yen

Just intended to do a spot check because muhootsaver keeps bitching about it but ended up watching the entire series. Maybe it's because I'm now viewing it on a 52" Samsung LCD instead of my old 34" Sony Wega but I seemed to be more aware of some graphical nuances that I missed in previous experiences. Sure the picture gets soft at times but overall it met my expectations for an upscale and I'm happy enough with it.

I actually liked the packaging because it's very similar to the 1st pressings of the original R2 DVD release which I still own. Sure it would have been great if there was a nice booklet instead of the foldout but I don't have any regrets purchasing the set.

For the record, I only bitched about it ONCE(in this thread). I'm not complaining about the price. I'm just pointing out that it's not one cour but 6 episodes.

About the video quality and packaging, I'm glad that you don't regret buying the set, but I personally think FLCL BD-BOX deserves that bitching.

Just to spread some oil on the flames, might I mention that the yen was worth far less when FLCL was originally released. Big difference between 85/dollar and 110-120/dollar. It was actually cheaper to buy then.

And, as for the release, I think it's pretty miserable. Funi's release later this year is likely to have better packaging and video at a far lower price. That doesn't exactly happen very often.

What about special features? Those directory commentary tracks were really nice. It'll be a shame if Funi ends up stripping them,

[Update - Link to full DVD100/BD50 list here]

http://yunakiti.blog79.fc2.com/blog-entry-6320.html

Preliminary top 30 DVD numbers.

One Piece Strong World has been kicking ass in every sales ranking I've seen, and now that it's out, it's abundantly clear that that's translated into real sales. 120,686 DVD LE and 35,273 DVD RE. 155,959 and we haven't even seen the Blu-ray numbers yet. Heh, this thing should top 200k easily.

A lot of the regular numbers after that. Drrr at 16k, Hakuouki at 12.5k, Working at 12.5k, Hetalia at 11k, Gintama at 10k.

Angel Beats! Vol. 3 DVD moves 9,801. Vol. 2 DVD did 10,103 first week, Vol. 1 did 11,360. BD had gone from 23.5k to 20.5k from vol. 1 to vol. 2 so I wonder if it'll drop more or stabilize.

Someone posted a chart of One Piece. I assume it's reflecting the 15 volumes that correspond to the 4 boxsets? I don't know anything about OP really.

○ONE PIECE 【
BOX01 32,903 10.07.23 ※EAST BLUE
BOX02 31,455 10.07.23 ※SANJI
BOX03 21,607 10.08.27 ※NAMI
BOX04 20,892 10.08.27 ※LOGUE TOWN

That's some impressive numbers on the sets, considering the singles moved the same low home video numbers of any shounen show not called Gintama.

Full list.

New Vol. 1s!
Mitsudomoe does 1,302 BDs, no rank on DVDs. Obviously won't be tearing up the charts.
Much better placed was Sekirei which pulled in 3,971 + 2,573 for 6,544.

Haruhi-chan/Churuya-san BD Box sells 2,883.

Add 63,462 LE + 9,592 RE to One Piece Strong World's 155,959 DVDs for 229,013 total first week sales. Impressive.

I know someone asked about Break Blade before, the second disc did 2,023 DVD and 4,824 BD for 6,847.

Angel Beats Vol. 3 clocks in at 19,665 BD+ 9,801 DVD for 29,466 total. Dipping below the 30k mark for first week sales, will probably end up somewhere around 34k.

K-ON!! Vol. 2 adds 3,555 more BDs for 31,416 and 35,198 total. Vol. 1 charts yet again to add 649 BDs which takes it to 35,800 and 39,781 total.

Yojouhan Vol. 1 adds 908 BD and 1,227 DVDs (#100! We were one rank away from getting a pretty distorted view of this thing's sales...) for 7,028. The difference between "over 7k" and "under 5k" is so, so very slim, isn't it? That's the problem with these numbers... Over 7k sounds impressive. Under 5k sounds "good but unexceptional". Also, since it only had 3 days of sales in its first raning week, a much higher percentage of sales appeared in the second week than is usual.

Caught off-guard by Yakuindomo appearing again already. Forgot about that quick release schedule. Vol. 2 does 3,675 BD and 1,598 DVD for 5,273 first week. I just realized that's 700 more than Vol. 1's first week. I guess people were waiting to get them together.

Some final volumes - Railgun 8 does 14,116 + 5,609 for 19,725 and Hidamari 6 does 4,933 + 2,893 for 7,826.

Sora no Woto Vol. 6 does 2,736 BDs. Assuming around 1k DVDs gets 3.7k so it's been pretty consistent.

Rainbow - Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin did not rank at all. All Spring Vol. 1s are now accounted for! Though K-ON! and Yojouhan may yet add more.

---

Let's compare to those predictions Draneor posted before.

#05 0.319 0.102 *5,208 *4,407~*6,009 Sekirei ~Pure Engagement~壱 *6,544
#07 0.293 0.063 *4,329 *3,724~*4,934 Seitokai Yakuindomo *4,532
#12 0.103 0.030 *1,066 *,751~*1,381 Mitsudome *1,302

Lowballed Sekirei but pretty spot-on on Mitsudomoe, though granted they used a large range. I wonder if they intended DVD and BD to be in there? Probably moved a couple hundred DVD, but no way to know.

---

Spring Vol. 1 | Summer Vol. 1

Hmm... I wouldn't say 7k as impressive(especially considering the price. Also, simultaneous BD release is always less cost effective compared to DVD only), but I'd say it's very good for this type of shows. By the way, higher second week sales might also be due to low stock on the first week. I believe it was temporarily out of stock at amazon as well. Anyways, I hope numbers don't drop on the second volume.

One Piece was impressive indeed. Interesting, because I actually don't know anyone who bought this movie. It shows the difference in target audience quite clearly, doesn't it?

EDIT: Another interesting thing. One might think Precure would be similar. It sold much less but I saw several people uploading pics of BD on another forum. But no One Piece. Again, shows who the target audience is. ^^

That's basically what I meant. It's the best selling show of the season (by a fair margin) outside of the otaku-favored 10k+ hits (k-on, ab, oofuri, working, hakuouki, hetalia). Basically, it's the kind of show you'd expect people to point to when they want to bawwwwwww about how fans don't like quality blah blah... except this time it sold well. As for DVD only being more cost effective, well, the BD does cost more to buy as well. No guarantee those 50% who went BD for it would have bought it at all if there were no BD option.

I think One Piece has more crossover with the DVD/BD-buying otaku audience than Precure does. Not that precure doesn't (the amount of fanart is evidence that it does), but I'd be quite surprised to see a Precure movie hit 6 digits. Not quite so much with One Piece.

Default 2000-2010 TV Anime Sales 10k+

http://yunakiti.blog79.fc2.com/blog-entry-6375.html

The early posts there are about Vol. 1 sales per season but scattered here and there throughout seems to be lists of shows since 2000 that sold 10k or more.

Note:
- TV Anime only
- Initial release only
- OVAs, specials, movies etc not included

Changes:
The main difference bewteen the lists I found at that link and the list below if that the Japanese posters like to add boxset sales to a show's total, which I personally find makes for an unequal comparison to shows that haven't had a boxset release yet. It's not that it's not interesting of useful information in its own way, but it's just not a straight comparison for what I'm doing here.

- Most significantly, this changes #1. They were counting 10k SEED Destiny boxsets which would put it slightly ahead of Bake.
- Notable is FMA (first series) which they had down as 52,900 because it sold 36,519 initial + 16,381 in the boxset. So instead of #4 it's #12.
- Also have to knock 10k off GitS SAC 2nd, 5k off Clannad, etc. Some just dropped below 10k completely if you remove boxsets (Fumoffu, Pani Poni Dash, etc.)

Oh I made an exception to the 10k limit for HiME, because, c'mon, only 6 short? =P It obviously sold more than 10k since no reported sales are always 100% comprehensive.

Note that I don't have truly comprehensive knowledge of what anime has received a JP boxset, but did try to catch most irregularities.

Oh neat, I don't think I ever came across the fact that Hand Maid May was such a good DVD-seller in Japan before (not that it surprises me, I guess).
