Preliminary DVD 30

K-ON!! Vol. 5 DVD does 4,106 which is, amusingly, its highest yet. 2 was less than 1, but then 3, 4, and 5 all increased on 2 and each other. Of course, it's all within a few hundred.

Gundam UC Vol. 2 adds 8,233 DVDs. No use recalculating the total before week two BDs hit.

No full list yet but: http://akiba.kakaku.com/hobby/1011/24/113000.php

Vol. 5 starts at 30k BDs for 34k total, which I think is the best first week sales yet. This means... K-ON! all told has sold over half a million discs! 424k BDs and 81k DVDs.

Full list.

Summer updates:
Amagami SS released two volumes in the same week? Huh. Vol. 2 does 4,267/1,666 for 5,933 and Vol. 3 does 3,592/1,337 for 4,929. Personally, I thought Kaoru's arc was superior but I'm not actually surprised to see Haruka outsell.

Once again, nothing much else to say.

Spring updates:
Angel Beats!
AB! Vol 1: 40,442 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 2: 35,483 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 3: 33,251 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 4: 31,782 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 5: 30,922 (*3 wk)
K-ON!! Vol. 5 starts at 30,019/4,106 for 34,125, and Vol. 4 tops 38k. Vol. 5's first week sales are higher than Vol 1?
!! Vol 1: 42,433 (12 wk)
!! Vol 2: 39,247 (*9 wk)
!! Vol 3: 38,747 (*7 wk)
!! Vol 4: 37,577 -> 38,019 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 5: 34,125 (*1 wk)

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Gundam UC Vol. 2 adds 10,024/8,233 in its second week for 140,261. Only 30k short of Vol. 1 now.
To Aru Kagaku no Railgun OVA increases by 530 to 34,405.
Abenobashi BD Box only moves 512.

Railgun has now averaged 25,596/disc if you count the OVA, 24,495 otherwise. Right behind Azumanga as JC Staff's best selling.

Spring Vol. 1 | Summer Vol. 1

Preliminary DVD list.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st moves 22,758 on DVD alone. BDs should be far higher. 70k combined? 80k?

Angel Beats! Vol. 6 DVD does 8,929.

And the usual beyond that.

According to Yahoo News/MantanWeb, the Oricon weekly rankings show Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st sold around 58,000 to go around 80k for its first week.

Of more interest to myself, the Haruhi Box sold 31,000 on Blu-Ray. Not as much as was claimed to have shipped, but still became the best selling anime BD-Box.

50k was probably a decent number to print given total lifetime sales... maybe a bit high, but it could end up around 40k before it drops off the rankings. Then another few thousand along the long tail and they've only overproduced by a few thousand.

Anyway, 31,000 is just ludicrous. Utterly completely ludicrous for a boxset. It would have been the highest selling and highest grossing BD box ever at just 10k, and it did three times that. This is probably the highest grossing anime boxset (rerelease) period. I mean, literally ever, or at least since ~1999-2000 when easily accessible Oricon numbers begin.

Taking my numbers from the other thread:

Darker than Black, with 9,703 * ¥36,750 = ¥356,585,250
Clannad, with 4,960 * ¥62,580 = ¥310,396,800

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, with 31,000 * ¥39,900 = ¥1,236,900,000

Literally quadruple the nearest competition.

Endless Eight _obviously_ put a huge dent in sales. ;p

Nothing should top this since all the series that have outsold Haruhi have already been released on Bluray. Still 30k out of a series that avg 40k and 19k for it's two seasons is very, very impressive.

Well, I do have to wonder how many units a Gundam SEED BD Box would move. It's only had a DVD re-release, right? Which I think moved 12k or so units. But I have no idea how fervent the fanbase still is for it today.

On the other hand, it's easily one of the best selling DVD-only series of the last couple years, i.e. since BD became ubiquitous and expected by consumers. Especially consumers who would buy a show like Haruhi. It's not at all a stretch to assume many people were waiting for exactly this kind of release (which ended up being only 8 months from last vol to box, even less to announcement). 30k can't just be fans of the original series because moving 75% of your initial singles sales when the numbers are this high is just so incredibly outside the norm.

I agree that less would have waited for a BD set if E8 were shorter, but there's no way sales wouldn't have been halved if a BD release had been simultaneous with the DVDs. On the other hand sales of this set would likely have been lower.

Regardless, Haruhi makes ludicrous amounts of money in all forms.

That's more or less my position. I bought the 2006 LE DVDs, but I didn't buy the 2009 DVDs because the 2009 series was a HD production. I'm quite happy with the box, but I would have been buying BD-singles had them been released alongside the DVDs. I'm definitely a tiny element of the sales drop between the two DVD releases. I don't think that I've imported any HD show on DVD (it's not hard, since I don't buy all that much, and I don't recall my last R2-DVD series import [Negima OADs don't count ^_^ ]); I'm willing to buy the R1-DVD release of Durarara!!, but I wasn't going to pay R2 prices for a show that should be on BD. As much as I loved the series (and as beautiful as the packaging was), I skipped the Clannad LE DVDs, but I did buy the BD set that came out earlier this year. When they add a translation to the BDs, it makes the decision all that much easier. ^_^

I would have been buying the BD singles if they had been produced. Sales of a set would definitely have been lower if singles existed. How many series have had full-series sets produced after BD singles?

Seems that way to me. ^_^
