I don't think phenomena of that level can really be explained... it was just the right show at the right time. Struck a chord in a way nobody could ever have predicted. Obviously the source material was very popular so good sales weren't a shock, but the sheer degree of its success was what was shocking.

Probably the only other show in the last decade to have similar shock value relative to sales would have to be Haruhi. Again, also very popular source material... but 41k popular? Something special needs to happen for bestselling novels to reach that sort of level. Bake clearly still takes the cake though.

For reference, 2000-2010 shows over 30k/vol (updated to more or less current numbers on AS). Maybe someone could make an argument for K-ON!, which sold even more than Haruhi, but I think by early 2009 it was just sort of taken for granted that KyoAni = tens of thousands.

01) *78,524 - Bakemonogatari
02) *68,729 - Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny
03) *58,205 - Mobile Suit Gundam SEED
04) *50,552 - Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch
05) *44,243 - Macross Frontier
06) *43,459 - K-ON!
07) *42,701 - Mobile Suit Gundam 00
08) *42,690 - Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2
09) *41,038 - Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (2006)
10) *38,980 - K-ON!! ★ [6 of 9 vols]
11) *38,788 - Mobile Suit Gundam 00 S2
12) *36,519 - Full Metal Alchemist (2003)
13) *33,098 - Angel Beats!

Angel Beats! was a bit of a shocker but it's a bit lower in sales as well. Probably the #3 more surprising on there though.

All that said, I don't follow Gundam much and don't know how earlier series sold, so it could be that SEED's sales completely shocked the shit out of everyone. I'm guessing not though, it still being Gundam of all things.

Turn A Gundam was a sales and ratings flop in comparison to SEED. Lots of people say SEED only sold well because it was Gundam, that's totally ignoring that X flopped so badly in ratings it got cut short, Victory performed so poorly it opened the door for AU series and that Turn was a non factor.

Unicorn is the most successful UC product since Char's Counter Attack.. which was what 1989? And only Wing and 00 have been successes for AU series outside of SEED. (I think G did decent but yeah...)

I really think Sunrise dropped the ball not putting out a SEED Movie, sure it would more than likely be awful like Destiny but it would've raked in the $$$

Now I've always been curious of the effect anime adaptions have on LN's and manga and seeing last weeks LN ranking gives some good data to work with...

Weekly Light Novel Ranking for Dec 20 - 26
*1, 72,579 1,501,374 Moshidora (what a beast.. bet the anime sells like shit since I doubt it has otaku appeal)
*2, 45,987 *,*45,987 Kabukimonogatari (synopsis for this is so awesome.. hurry the fuck up SHAFT, it will be 2015 before you get to this let alone the final novel.)
*3, 37,310 *,*37,310 IS: Infinite Stratos vol.6
*4, 33,571 *,*33,571 Hidan no Aria vol.8

So I'll be curious to see the effect on LN sales that the anime for IS and HnA cause... both look like being high profile titles in the seasons they air in.. guess I'll bump this post in 6 months time...

Though I guess to really do my homework I should look @ their prior volumes as well as how they sold over a 2 week period.
Updating this...

Weekly Oricon Light Novel Ranking for Dec 27 - Jan 2
*1, 85,688 *,131,675 Kabukimonogatari (that's more like it... I wonder if these are 2x the price of a regular LN like Bake was...)
*2, 77,804 1,579,178 Moshidora
*8, *9,410 *,*41,981 Hidan no Aria vol.8
*9, *9,177 *,*46,487 IS: Infinite Stratos vol.6

And the IS anime has already boosted the LN sales of older novels off just the opening episode.

Weekly Light Novel Ranking for Jan 3 - 9
*1, 55,458 1,634,636 Moshidora
*2, 20,507 *,152,182 Kabukimonogatari
*6, 11,378 *,*63,609 IS: Infinite Stratos vol.1
*8, *9,622 *,*60,706 IS: Infinite Stratos vol.2
*9, *8,292 *,*58,613 IS: Infinite Stratos vol.3

Pretty much shows 50k was the amount it was selling prior to the anime.

It is also a fair bit less like 00 and Wing than SEED is, to be fair. Almost more "un-Gundam" (ironically). Or perhaps "less flashy and melodramatic" would be a better way of putting it. You can also draw other related connections between SEED, Wing, and 00 that suggest why they were all more successful than some other series, imo (it also might be interesting to note some of the things that all three share in common with Code Geass, to greater or lesser extents). It's difficult to say SEED sold "just because it was Gundam", but I think there is also some merit in the argument that it sold because it was a new start for "modern Gundam" (as it was so strongly positioned within the franchise - most symbolically being the first AU series to be called "Kidou Senshi Gundam", and thus the first TV series called as such since V nearly a decade before). Had it simply been... err... Soukyuu no Fafner, or something, I doubt it would have sold as phenomenally well.

Of course it is! All so they can much more awkward to put on a bookshelf, or carry around, or fit into protective covers, or simply read. :-/

DVD Top 100 for 12/27-01/02 and 01/03-01/09 and BD Top 50 for 01/03-01/09 are out. No BD data for 12/27-01/02. I was hoping some of the series that didn't rank before would this time, but unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. T.T

Yep, I'm typing up the post for this week and next now. Really sucks about the BD data for the week of 12/27.

Sorry to quote something from pages ago but how on earth did this happen? I thought this was one of the rather big hits back when it came out. Not to mention it's by MADHOUSE which is known for it's rather amazing animation. Though good animation =/= sales. Obviously. I'm just kind of shocked.

Well... dunno what to tell you. Needless was never a big hit from what I could tell. Other than some comments about the hot ED, few people talked about it and not a lot watched it.

...Full list? For some reason there is no BD ranking this week. Obviously that's a bit strange considering we know from the week after this that some anime BDs must have ranked. That kinda sucks, maybe it'll come out later. It's extra annoying for shows where we needed second week numbers and that don't have third week numbers to fill in. Especially given how much came out the week before.

1140 DVD threshold.

2010 12/27~2011 01/02 Oricon BD Top 50
Numbers unavailable

Fall update:
Unfortunately not much to say since we don't have BD numbers. We can do some based on third week sales in the 1/03 week list though.

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai Vol. 1 did 1,739 BDs this week if you work back from the 1/03 numbers, so this week it was up to 24,241.

Shinryaku! Ikamusume Vol. 1 was 6,181 last week, and 7,598 next week, so this week it was 934 BDs to 7,115.

Hakuouki Hekketsuroku Vol. 1 increases 1,343 to 11,694. DVD-only series so that's a full accounting.
