Does its lack of appearance on this chart mean that Panty & Stocking is flopping in sales?

Vol. 1 did 2,127 BDs and ~1,000 DVDs (estimated, it was a very busy week so wasn't in the top 100) so guesstimate around 3,100. Plus figure a couple hundred more combined in its second week. Taking into account that each volume of a show tends to sell less than the one before it'll probably average a little less than 3k/vol. Frankly I don't know much it cost to produce, but I'd say that at best it'd just barely make production costs back/break even. Potentially it's a loss - it depends on how well non-video merchandise for the show is selling. The OST did pretty good for an album, moving something like 20k copies.

The DVD Top 100 threshold this week is 1,139 so it sold less DVDs than that (makes sense if Vol. 1 was around 1k). We'll see what the BD number is - if it's close to 2,127 then maybe the show at least has a bit of consistency in its sales. If the BDs drop well below that then it may be a bad sign.

So it's not tearing up the charts by any stretch but I've seen shows do worse.

Interesting.

Now, while Fanart is a terrible way to estimate how well a show will sell, there is generally at least a bit of correlation, especially for Otaku shows. PSG was doing remarkably well in terms of fanart, it was neck and neck with OreImo for a good chunk of both their runs (though at the end, and after they finished, OreImo took a commanding lead), but while OreImo is, as expectred doing very well in sales, PSG is doing it seems just about averagish.

Again, not a good predictor, but its interesting to see what gets lots of fanart and what doesn't, and how that correlates to sales.

Its worth noting, that the vast majority of the PSG fanart was not in anything remotely resembling the show's style. So that may have something to do with the discrepancy. The character's were the focus of the fanart, but the show's art style is a turnoff for actually purchasing it. Again, just a theory,.

It did somewhere between 16,500 and 17,500 and since Vol. 1 did 18,085 we can expect high stability from in future volumes. DVDs were also very close, dropping only 5% between vols 1-2. At a similar drop, BDs would be around 17,200. Anyway it's about 22k first week.

Phile-web ranking for the week. Not as accurate as Oricon and without numbers but meh.

http://www.phileweb.com/ranking/bd-top20/

List is pretty rank and file. Oreimo first with Index second, Strike Withes third, and finally Star Driver coming in with Ika hot on its trails. Assuming Ika did upper 5,000s this time around, then Star Driver should be in the low=mid 6,000s which will definitely put it over 11,000 and give it third place for this season over Hakuouki. What a come back.

It's a pinch! 12.4k sales is pretty damn good for Star Driver, in the running with DTB for being the 2nd highest selling title Bones have produced.

Fish Girl song is totally the best song of the season, fuck it best song since Supercells Bake ED.

Fall update:
To Aru Majutsu no Index II Vol. 1 does 12,721/4,749 for 17,470.

Star Driver Vol. 1 does 7,321/5,071 for 12,392.

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga nai Vol. 2 starts at 17,238/4,828 for 22,066. Looks like our #1 and #2 of the season are set in stone, and wholly unsurprising.

Bakuman. Vol. 1 actually did betetr than I expected! 648/1,404 for 2,052. BDs just barely made the cut, by 3 copies. Not exactly tearing up the charts but I didn't think it would rank.

Kuragehime VOl. 1 does manage to rank, but 730 BDs only, no DVD rank.

Hakuouki Hekketsuroku Vol. 2 starts at 10,539.

Shinryaku! Ikamusume Vol. 2 does 6,191 BDs but again, DVDs don't chart at all.

Yosuga no Sora Vol. 2 is 5,626/1,372 for 6,998. Hmm, Vol. 1 DVD probably did more than the 1.2k listed before then.

Sora no Otoshimono Forte Vol. 2 does 2,733/1,460 for 4,193 which gives us a better estimate of what Vol. 1 did.

Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai Vol. 1 does 2,754 BDs. DVD unranked.

Panty & Stocking Vol. 2 does 2,191 BDs. DVD unranked.

Otome Youkai Zakuro Vol. 3 does 2,007.

Tegami Bachi Reverse Vol. 2 does 1,840 so ~2k for Vol. 1 was probably pretty close.

Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru Vol. 2, 1,627 BDs. DVD unranked.

MM! Vol. 2 ranks, and it did 1,097 BDs. DVD unranked but Vol, 1 was around 850.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes Vol. 1 adds 717 BDs for 7,646. Glad it was able to rank again.

Shinrei Tantei Yakumo did not rank.

Summer update:
Strike Witches 2 Vol. 5 - 9,377/2,565 for 11,942.
Motto To LOVE-Ru Vol. 3 - 3,542/2,475 for 6,017.
Hyakka Rouran Vol. 3 - 3,563/1,919 for 5,482
Sekirei Pure Engagement Vol. 6 - 3,131/1,996 for 5,127

Spring updates:
K-ON!!
!! Vol 1: 42,433 (12 wk)
!! Vol 2: 39,247 (*9 wk)
!! Vol 3: 38,747 (*7 wk)
!! Vol 4: 38,019 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 5: 39,707 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 6: 36,756 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 7: 30,545 -> 33,352 (*2 wk) - adds 2,807

AB! is pretty much done at this point so see 1/17 for the last list.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Awakening of the Trailblazer adds 1,198/1,026 BDs and 1,895 DVDs to 136,594 total for all versions.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu adds 1,195 for 132,105.

Gintama, BRS and Nanoha don't rank this week.

Lots of rerelease boxsets this week from Emotion the Best and Rondo Robe Selection and the like:
∀ Gundam - G-SELECTION 3,499
Meitantei Holmes - Emotion the Best 2,650
Baccano - BD Box 2,156
Cardcaptor Sakura - Rondo Robe Selection Box 1 1,949
Shakugan no Shana - Rondo Robe Selection Box 1 1,763
Ichigo Mashimaro - Rondo Robe Selection 1,177
Shuffle - BD Box 865

Gah, so busy this week and I even skipped a bunch of stuff.

I'm considering going back and translating the full lists from 2011 onward (or maybe the end of 2010 onward to catch the early Fall Vol. 1s) though it'll have to happen later in the day. Too much time needed to do so when posting from work. These things come out with really bad timing for me.

Index II did a bit less than I expected. I guess people just prefer to read it.

Well, that's not too bad. I was thinking less, based on the ranking. Still, I wonder how much the latter two would have sold had they been BD.

Geez, how many episodes did it take for the otaku to finally take an interest in Star Driver?

It wouldn't surprise me. I mean there's the advantage of being ahead of the anime and not having to worry about what often seems to happen with adaptations of light novels. I could be wrong, but I get the impression that there's often a lot of cutting out of material going on.
